Small Passenger Vessel Operators: Notes Record keeping is a good marine practice, and more importantly, it is required by law/regulation. The Owner/Operator/Master remains responsible to ensure all information is correct and properly filled out and is the overall responsible party for the vessel. This log book is a tool to ensure drills, training, tests and maintenance are properly logged and to streamline the Inspection process. Use of this logbook is not a guarantee against penalty or enforcement action. FIRE PROTECTION Notes FIXED GAS FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM (CO 2 ): 46 CFR 176.810(a) At each initial and subsequent inspection for certification the owner or managing operator shall be prepared to conduct tests and have the vessel ready for inspection of its fire protection equipment. 46 CFR Table 176.810(b) Weigh Cylinders, Recharge if weight loss exceeds 10% of charge. Test time delays, alarms, and ventilation shutdowns as stated in the manufacturers instruction manual. Inspect hoses and nozzles to be sure they are clean. 46 CFR 176.810(b)(2) and 46 CFR 147.65 Carbon dioxide cylinders forming part of fixed gas fire extinguishing system must be retested (hydrostatically tested) every 12 years. If discharged, must be retested before being refilled. Flexible connections must be retested at the same time as the cylinders. PRE-ENGINEERED (FIREBOY): NVIC 3-95 Check pressure gauge every 6 months. Weigh cylinders once per year. Visual external inspection every 5 years by trained steel cylinder inspectors. Flex loops, hoses, and attachments shall be inspected in accordance with NFPA 12A 6.3 every 5 years. NFPA 10-7.2.1 INSPECTION FREQUENCY : Fire extinguishers shall be inspected either manually or by means of an electronic monitoring device/system at a minimum of 30-day intervals. NFPA 10-7.2.2 PROCEDURES Periodic inspection or electronic monitoring of fire extinguishers shall include a check of at least the following items: location in designated place; no obstruction to access visibility; pressure gauge reading or indicator in the operable range or position; fullness determined by weighing or hefting for self expelling-type extinguishers; cartridge-operated extinguishers; indicator for non rechargeable extinguishers using push-to-test pressure indicators.
