RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROPER PROTECTION The Following Recommendations for the Location of Fire and Burglary Detection Devices Help Provide Proper Coverage for the Protected Premises. Recommendations For Smoke And Heat Detectors With regard to the number and placement of smoke/heat detectors, we subscribe to the recommendations contained in the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard #72 noted below. Early warning fire detection is best achieved by the installation of fire detection equipment in all rooms and areas of the household as follows: For minimum protection a smoke detector should be installed outside of each separate sleeping area, and on each additional floor of a multi-floor family living unit, including basements. The installation of smoke detectors in kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished), or in garages is not normally recommended. For additional protection the NFPA recommends that you install heat or smoke detectors in the living room, dining room, bedroom(s), kitchen, hallway(s), attic, furnace room, utility and storage rooms, basements and attached garages. In addition, we recommend the following: Install a smoke detector inside every bedroom where a smoker sleeps. Install a smoke detector inside every bedroom where someone sleeps with the door partly or completely closed. Smoke could be blocked by the closed door. Install a smoke detector at both ends of a hallway if the hallway is more than 40 feet (12 meters) long. Install smoke detectors in any room where an alarm control is located, or in any room where alarm control connections to an AC source or phone lines are made. If detectors are not so located, a fire within the room could prevent the control from reporting a fire or an intrusion. THIS CONTROL COMPLIES WITH NFPA REQUIREMENTS FOR TEMPORAL PULSE SOUNDING OF FIRE NOTIFICATION APPLIANCES. Recommendations For Proper Intrusion Protection For proper intrusion coverage, sensors should be located at every possible point of entry to a home or commercial premises. This would include any skylights that may be present, and the upper windows in a multi-level building. In addition, we recommend that radio backup be used in a security system so that alarm signals can still be sent to the alarm monitoring station in the event that the telephone lines are out of order (alarm signals are normally sent over the phone lines, if connected to an alarm monitoring station). ii

S E C T I O N 1 Features and Installation Highlights About LYNX LXL-1000 LYNX LXL-1000 is a compact security system featuring total wireless zone protection. Integral to the LXL-1000 control, requiring no installation action is the sounder and RF receiver/transmitter, an embedded Cellular Control Channel Transceiver and a digital communicator. LXL-1000 also contains a rechargeable battery that provides up to 24 hours of standby operation in the event of AC loss. The LXL-1000 control is mounted to a duplex receptacle and the only external interface is telephone wiring. Refer to Figure 1 for the LXL- 1000 internal overview. LXL-1000 Internal Overview QM-022-V0 LXL-1000 and AlarmNet C LXL-1000 s Cellular Control Channel Transceiver provides the subscriber end of the AlarmNet C reporting system. It is comparable to a digital communicator, but instead of transmitting signals over the telephone lines, it transmits radio signals to the central monitoring station using the control channel of the AMPS cellular phone network. This allows faster and more secure reporting and greater coverage. The Cellular Control Channel Transceiver uses the control channel of the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) cellular network to report subscriber alarms and system status messages. It operates on either the A or B side of the cellular network without using a voice channel. Because alarms are transmitted only on the control channel, a true phone call is never placed. This eliminates delays due to busy or saturated cells where no voice channels are available. LXL-1000 is compliant with the MicroBurst standard for packet-based control channel cellular communication. Alarm and status packets are transmitted from the subscriber to a local cell where they are identified and then routed to the AlarmNet Control Center. 1 1

LXL-1000 Installation and Setup Guide Capabilities Functions The AlarmNet Control Center then logs the alarm and routes it via RF to the appropriate AlarmNet-A or AlarmNet-M equipped central station. LXL-1000 s embedded Cellular Control Channel Transceiver can be used in conjunction with the digital communicators to provide redundant reporting. Zones Supports up to 32 wireless transmitter zones (5800 series; zones 1-32) plus 8 keyfob zones (zones 33-40) for total of 40 zones Security Codes Up to 32 Security Codes, each with separate authority levels Downloading Via an IBM compatible computer, Compass downloading software, and a compatible HAYES or ADEMCO CIA modem specified by Ademco. UL Downloading may only be performed if a technician is at the site. Night Stay and step arming can be set on the keypad Single-button arming feature (on keypads or keyfobs): Can use dedicated keys to arm the system AWAY or STAY Up to 8 schedules, to control devices and/or auto-arm/disarm the system Up to two keypad macros, which can be activated by wireless keypads Paging feature allows certain system conditions to be reported to pager phone numbers; can use a dedicated key on keypads to send a signal to a pager (supports 2 pagers) Built-in Telephone Line Monitoring option can monitor the telephone line voltage and can cause a local display, or a display and trouble/alarm sound. Event Logging records up to 50 selected events in a history log; control and readout from the log is done via Ademco Compass Downloader software or installer/master code at 5839 Alpha RF Keypad Zone descriptors for all zones Optional RF jam detection for wireless systems detects a condition that may impede proper RF reception (i.e., jamming or other RF interference); causes keypad display, and sends a report to the central monitoring station (if trouble reporting is enabled). Compatible Devices UL The 5839, 5828 and 5828V keypads cannot be used for UL Installations. For UL installations the 5827BD keypad must be used. Powerline carrier devices are not UL Listed for fire or burglary functions and are intended for home automation. System Features Supports up to seven 5839 Alpha RF Keypads and unlimited 5827BD, 5828 Fixed RF Keypads or 5828V Fixed RF Voice Keypads (Function keys will not work as set in *57) Supports 5800 series transmitters Powerline Carrier Devices (X-10 type) For programming the control during installation, supports either a 6160 or 6139 Alpha keypad (Installer Keypad). Tamper Protection The control is tampered protected. An alarm will sound if the cover is removed or if the control is removed from its mounted location. 1 2

Two Communication Status LEDs One RF activity indicator, activates momentarily when RF is received (used during installation to program sensors serial number to the control) The control utilizes three Security System Control Status LEDs that indicate control arming state and power status as follows: READY LED (Green): Lit when the system is disarmed and ready to be armed (no open zones). If the system is disarmed and the green light is off, the system is not ready (one or more zones are open). POWER LED (Yellow): Indicates system power status. Lit Steady = AC power on and battery good. Rapid Blinking = AC power off. Slow Blinking = Low Battery Off = AC power off and discharged battery ARMED LED (Red): Lit when system is armed AWAY or STAY mode. Built In Antenna The LXL-1000 comes equipped with an internal antenna. This antenna should provide the signal strength required for most installations. An optional ADEMCO 7825-OC outdoor antenna kit (described below) is available in case additional signal strength is needed for the installation. External Antenna (ADEMCO p/n 7825-OC: optional) In cases where the internal antenna cannot provide sufficient signal strength, an optional external antenna kit is available shown in Figure 2. Please note that the two Antenna Selection jumpers must be configured as indicated; setting both horizontally selects the external antenna; setting both vertically selects the internal antenna. LXL-1000 Installation and Setup Guide Programming Installer Keypad Functions and Section 5, Long Range Radio Programming (*29 Menu Mode), Programming to become familiar with the use of the Installer Keypads keys used to program the control. UL The 5839, 5828 and 5828V keypads cannot be used for UL Installations. For UL installations the 5827BD keypad must be used. The system can use up to seven 5839 keypads, the first keypad uses address 01 and the subsequent keypad(s) (if used) uses address 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 respectively. The 5827BD and 5828 series keypads use the house ID. Relays have two programming menu modes: Use *79 Menu mode to map device (output) numbers. Use *80 Menu mode to define the output functions (see Output Device Programming section). This system supports programmable function keys. Use *57 Menu mode to define the function keys (see Function Key Programming section). This system provides various paging features. Refer to Section 3, Programming Overview section for a summary on pager programming. 1 4

S E C T I O N 2 Quick Start Installation Guide General The Quick Start Installation Guide provides you with the necessary installation procedures to get the LXL-1000 mounted and operational. The sections that follow provide detailed information designed to further enhance or modify the LXL-1000 standard defaulted operational functions. 1. Remove the Cover During normal operation, the cover of the LXL-1000 control remains in place. Press inward on the two locking tabs shown in Figure 1 and remove the cover. Figure 1. LXL-1000 Cover Locking Tabs Referring to Figure 2, install the battery and battery bracket as shown and then connect the battery connector to the pc board. Select Installation Site BEFORE PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER - Verify that there is MicroBurst Coverage in the area in which this unit is to be installed by either checking the coverage selection at the AlarmNet web site www.ademco.com/alarmnet or by calling our technical assistance group at 1-800-222-6525. The ZIP code of the given installation site must be known in order to determine MicroBurst availability. BEFORE DRILLING ANY HOLES FOR MOUNTING: REMEMBER, IT S ALL ABOUT COVERAGE! CHECK SIGNAL STRENGTH! Select a location where the signal strength level is consistently better than 3 bars as observed on the RSSI LEDs on the controls PC board. CHECK ABILITY TO TRANSMIT! Be sure that the LXL-1000s Cellular Control Channel Transceiver can successfully transmit in the location selected. The red status LED should NOT be blinking after each transmission attempt. CHECK Duplex Receptacle Orientation! If the duplex receptacle is installed with the ground UP, the ground pin on the control has to be moved to the alternate position shown in Figure 6. When selecting a mounting location, do not mount this unit in an area where the occupants could reasonably be within 20cm (8 inches) of the antenna. Plug the LXL-1000 control in at the desired location. Select a duplex outlet location with the best signal strength by observing the RSSI LED s 3-7. A minimum of 3 bars two yellow and one green are required for adequate operation. The RED RF LED located on the receiver's circuit board should be used as an indicator of strong local radio frequency interference. If this LED is continuously illuminated, the control should be relocated. Signal strength may also be measured using the Installer Keypad, refer to Section 14, Testing and Troubleshooting LXL-1000, Cellular Control Channel Transceiver Diagnostics Mode. Optimum RF performance can usually be found at the highest point within a building, with the fewest number of walls between the control and the outside of the premises. Avoid mounting the LXL-1000 near other electronic devices. Table 1 provides minimum distances. Highest RF energy is in the direct, horizontal line of the antenna. Therefore, vertical separation (moving electronic devices either higher or lower on the wall) provides a higher level of isolation from the control. Table 1. Section 2: Quick Start Installation Guide Cellular Control Channel Transceiver Initial Power-Up Sequence When LXL-1000 is initially plugged in, the Cellular Control Channel Transceiver enters a power-on reset state referred as Carrier Search Mode, indicated by the RSSI and communication status LEDs lighting in a chaser sequence. After this power-up sequence, the communication status LEDs display: green lit and red lit. This indicates the Cellular Control Channel Transceiver is functioning but not yet initialized. The Cellular Control Channel Transceiver then begins its initialization sequence. During this process, the Cellular Control channel Transceiver is verifying it s Mobile Identification Number (MIN) and checking for MicroBurst service on both the A and B side carriers. This initialization is displayed on the RSSI bar graph as shown in Table 2. Both yellow LEDs remain unlit and the green LED at the extreme right of the display begins to blink. When this LED lights, the next green LED begins to blink, until all 3 green LEDs are lit. This countdown event may take up to 10 minutes complete. If radio setup and self-test fails, LED 7 blinks continuously and no further progress is made. If MicroBurst coverage is not found on either the A or B side, the LXL-1000 repeats Table 2, steps 2 and 3. These steps are repeated until MicroBurst is found. LED 2 lit indicates no Microburst coverage. Once this sequence has been completed, the RSSI display begins to function as a signal strength indicator as shown in Figure 3. Table 2. Registering the LXL-1000 s Cellular Control Channel Transceiver prior to Final Mounting is required to verify the path from the Cellular Control Channel Transceiver to AlarmNet and back. If multiple (3 or more) failures to transmit occur (as indicated by the red Communication Status LED rapidly blinking after each transmission), the location selected may be inadequate and the LXL-1000 should be moved to a different location or External Antenna ADEMCO p/n 7825-OC must be used. Refer to Quick Mode Programming procedures that follow to Program the LRR, Register the Long Range Radio, Select System Defaults, Add Primary Phone Number, Add Primary Sub ID Account Number, Add Secondary Phone Number, Add Secondary Sub ID Account Number, Add Sensors, Delete Sensors, and enter Expert Programming Mode. to finalize system features Quick Mode Programming Installer Keypad Functions UL The 5839, 5828 and 5828V keypads cannot be used for UL Installations. When stepping through the Phone Number and Sub ID (subscriber ID and Central station) phone number fields, the existing data is displayed. If the field is selected for editing, the data in that field will be deleted. The field can be left blank by pressing the ADD key. Enter new data and then press the ADD key. When you have completed each programming option, press the ESC to return to the prior prompt. Program LRR Prior to Registering the Cellular Control Channel Transceiver the City Code, CS ID, Sub ID #, and Time Zone is required and needs to be programmed. LRR programming option entries are provided by the AlarmNet Technical Assistance Center. Valid entries for the CS ID are 0-9, # +1 for A, # + 2 for B, # + 3 for C, # + 4 for D, # + 5 for E, and # + 6 for F. If incorrect data has been entered pressing the DELETE key backs up to enable rewrite. Pressing # + 0 at any point in the LRR radio programming Quick Mode returns you to the beginning of Program LRR option. Program the desired LRR parameters in the system. If this message is displayed with a P primary ID, and/ or an S secondary ID, it indicates that the ID information was either entered in error, or the central station failed to pre-authorize programmed ID numbers with AlarmNet customer service. This prompt is displayed if this is a repair/replacement, or an error was made in programming LXL-1000 for an existing account. Numerous transmission failures also indicated by the red Communication Status LED blinking rapidly indicate that the location chosen might be preventing the LXL-1000 from transmitting well; the unit should be relocated. SELECT DEFAULTS Scroll to the Select Defaults option to change the current default table. You have a choice of four different default tables. The defaults associated with each configuration are shown in the LXL-1000 Installation and Setup Guide Programming Form. Mount the Control When programming and testing of the control is complete, unplug LXL-1000 and remove the existing duplex or Decora receptacle cover plate. Do not discard screw(s) they will be used in the next step. Using the appropriate receptacle adapter supplied, standard duplex or Decora, attach the adapter to the wall receptacle using the screws removed in step 1. NOTE: When the selected mounting location duplex outlet is installed with the duplex receptacle ground pin in the up position, the ground pin on the LX-1000 control must be relocated to the control s alternate grounding pin location as shown in Figure 5 and 6. A typical installation using the duplex receptacle adapter with the grounding pin in the As Shipped location is shown in Figure 5. A typical installation using the duplex receptacle adapter with the duplex receptacle s grounding pin installed up is shown in Figure 6. If this configuration exists, unscrew the ground pin from the control by turning it counter clockwise. Install the pin in the alternate location, shown in Figure 6, by turning it clockwise until finger tight. Using the screws and anchors supplied, attach the control s mounting plate to the receptacle adapter and the wall as shown in Figure 5 or Figure 6. S E C T I O N 3 Programming Overview About Programming You can program the system at any time, even at the installer's premises prior to the actual installation. Programming can also be performed remotely from the installer s office/home, using an IBM personal computer, a modem, and Compass downloading software. UL Downloading may only be performed if a technician is at the site. The following is a list of the various Programming modes used to program this system. UL The 5839, 5828 and 5828V keypads cannot be used for UL Installations. For UL installations the 5827BD keypad must be used. Most of the data fields in this system have been programmed for specific default values. However, some fields must be programmed for each particular installation to establish its specific alarm and reporting features. The Quick Mode Programming is a simplified programming option that can be used to modify defaulted programming options. Assign Long Range Radio output, enter Long Range Radio Expert Programming Mode, or enter Long Range Radio Diagnostics Mode (refer to Section 14, Testing and Troubleshooting LXL-1000, Cellular Control Channel Transceiver Diagnostics Mode ). Use with programming field *54 Dynamic Signaling Delay and *55 Dynamic Signaling Priority for LRR reporting. Assign zone characteristics, report codes, alpha descriptors, and serial numbers for 5800 RF transmitters. Programs each 5839 used four alphabet function keys to perform one of several system operations. Assign zone attributes similar to 56 mode, but provides a faster programming procedure and is intended for those more experienced in programming controls of this type. Assign unit codes for Powerline Carrier devices (X-10). Pager Programming The system can send various reports to up to two pagers. To program pager reporting, do the following: 1. Enter the appropriate information in the following data fields: *160, *163 Pager Phone Numbers (for pagers 1-2 respectively) *161, *164 Pager Prefix Characters (for pagers 1-2 respectively) *162, *165 Pager Reporting Options (for pagers 1-2 respectively) 2. Enable Pager Delay, if desired, in field *172 (delays alarm reporting for ALL pagers). 3. Enable appropriate user open/close pager reports using the user attribute command (master code + [8] + user no. + [#] [5] + [1]). Users that perform actions will, if enabled, attempt to report to all pagers enabled for open/close reporting 4. If using latchkey pager report, define the latchkey report schedule using Scheduling mode (master code + [#] [6] [4] then select event type 03 ). 3 2

To assign emergency key functions (function key option 00 ), first program the respective emergency zone number (95 for A key, 96 for C key, 99 for B key) with the desired zone type using *56 Zone Programming mode, then use *57 Function Key menu mode to assign the desired key. If using a function key to activate a relay action (*57 Menu mode key function 07), use *79 Menu mode to map the output, and use *80 Menu mode to define the output s action; select system operation type 66. If using a function key for a user macro, use *57 menu mode to activate the desired key, then define the actual macro functions using the user code + [#] + [6] [6] command. UL Powerline carrier devices are not UL Listed for fire or burglary functions and are intended for home automation. To program a device for manual activation (user code + [#] [7] / [#] [8] + 2-digit device number) or for scheduled automatic activation, simply map the device using *79 Menu mode. To program a device to automatically activate upon a system event (or function key), use *79 Menu mode to map the device, then use *80 Menu mode to define the automated device action. If the device action is based on more than one zone, use *81 Zone List menu mode to assign the zones. Quick Mode Programming Zone Type Definitions Quick Mode programming enables you to quickly program the defaulted programming features by responding to a series of displayed prompts. Quick Mode is entered by pressing 4 + 1 + 1 + 2 (Installer code) followed by 8 + 8 + 8 on the Installers Keypad, after the initial startup delay busy standby is terminated or expires. A zone type must be assigned to each zone. Zone type defines the way in which the system responds to faults in that zone. Quick Mode Programming automatically assigns zone types based on the sensor selected. When using Data Field Programming you must assign a zone type to each zone. Zone types are defined as follows. Zone Type Description Type 00 Program a zone with this zone type if the zone is not used. Zone Not Used Type 01 Entry/Exit Burglary #1 Type 02 Entry/Exit Burglary #2 Assign to zones that are used for primary entry and exit. Provides entry delay if control is armed in the Away, Stay, or Night-Stay modes. Entry Delay 1 timer is programmable in field *35. No entry delay provided when the panel is armed in the Instant/Maximum mode. Exit delay begins whenever the control is armed, regardless of the arming mode selected. Exit delay timer is programmable in field *34. Assign to zones that are used for entry and exit and require more time than the primary entry/exit point. Entry Delay 2 timer is programmable in field *36. Provides a secondary entry delay, in same manner as entry delay #1. Assign to a zone covering an area such as a foyer, lobby, or hallway through which one must pass upon entry (to and from the keypad). Provides a delayed alarm (using the programmed entry/exit time) if the entry/exit zone is faulted first. Otherwise this zone type gives an instant alarm. Active when the panel is armed in the Away mode. Bypassed automatically when the panel is armed in the Stay or Instant modes; if armed in Night-Stay mode, zones assigned to zone list 05 (night-stay zone list) are not bypassed when system armed in Night-Stay mode. Assign to a zone that contains a foil-protected door or window (such as in a store), or to a zone covering a sensitive area such as a stock room, drug supply room, etc. Can also be used on a sensor or contact in an area where immediate notification of an entry is desired. Provides an instant alarm if faulted when armed in the Away, Stay, Night-Stay, Instant or Maximum (night) modes. During the disarmed state (day), the system will provide a latched trouble sounding from the keypad (and a central station report, if desired). Usually assigned to a zone containing an emergency button. Sends a report to the central station but provides no keypad display or sounding. Assign to a zone that has an emergency button. Sends a report to the central station, and provides an alarm sound at the keypad, internal sounder, and an audible external alarm. Assign to a zone containing an emergency button, or to a zone containing monitoring devices such as water or temperature sensors. Sends a report to the central station and provides an alarm sound at the keypad, internal sounder, and an audible external alarm. Provides a fire alarm when detector is faulted and a trouble condition when the cover is removed. A fire alarm produces a pulsing internal sounder output. This zone type is always active and cannot be bypassed. Provides entry delay (using the programmed entry time), if tripped when the panel is armed in the Away mode. Entry Delay 1 timer is programmable in field *35. Entry Delay 1 begins whenever sensors in this zone are violated, regardless of whether or not an entry/exit delay zone was tripped first. Bypassed when the panel is armed in the Stay or Instant modes; if armed in Night-Stay mode, zones assigned to zone list 05 (night-stay zone list) are not bypassed when system armed in Night-Stay mode. Works as a dynamic monitor of a zone fault/trouble (not alarm). The system keypad will display a check message indicating the appropriate zone (but keypad beeping does not occur). The check message will automatically disappear from the keypad dynamically, when the zone restores; a user code + off sequence is not needed to reset the zone. Faults of this zone type are independent of the system, and can exist at the time of arming without interference. Since this is a trouble zone type, do not use this zone type with X-10 Powerline Carrier Devices set to activate upon alarm. Assigned to any zone with a carbon monoxide detector. The internal sounder output will pulse when this zone type is alarmed. Always active and cannot be bypassed. Arms the system in Stay mode when the zone is activated. Pushbutton units send the user number to the central station when arming or disarming. User number for button must be assigned. 3 4
