Sé is never predictable. A founding principle of ours is to push design forward.
Curvaceous, lithe and refined, Sé s second collection of furniture has a celebratory air. Designed by acclaimed Spanish designer Jaime Hayon for the London-based furniture house, the new pieces display the sparkling Hayon spirit, as well as representing the maturity of Sé s guiding principle: that from surface to structure, quality should be expressed throughout the entirety of a piece of furniture design. The Collection began one year ago when Jaime Hayon discussed creating a collection of furniture with Pavlo Schtakleff, Sé s director. The chance to match Hayon s playful visual language with the enduring quality demanded by Sé was seized and Hayon, who is renowned for taking inspiration from observations of everyday life, sought stimulation from two key sources: musical instruments and insects. After looking at strong curvilinear shapes violins, flutes, beetles, the harp Hayon sketched the Collection s furniture forms, analysing them in terms of materials and the subsequent manufacturing process, then transformed them into this coherent family. Driven by the Sé ethos, which demands the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship, strong legacy materials were used, such as velvet and leather to hand-upholster the Beetley range, and solid bronze for the sculptural Time Piece side tables. Hayon also ensured that simple material contrasts offer visual and tactile satisfaction in the Collection: for example, customers can choose to have the exterior of a Beetley sofa in different fabric to the interior, a design device that offers an experience of internal intimacy protected by an outer shell. This sense of contrast is present in different ways throughout the Collection. The soft upholstery of the Beetley chair floats cloud-like above the elegant lacquered steel legs. The Time Piece and Tambor tables express both solidity they are heavy, composed of solid metals and in their silhouettes, weightlessness. The Collection s pieces are strong sculptural expressions that emphasise the space around them. Sé has used its peerless black book of craftspeople to gain the best possible finishes for the Collection, and the use of noble materials bronze, marble, steel, velvet as seen in Sé s first collection, have also been inspirational to Hayon s designs for this range. The results are here: clean, organic shapes that can work in all kinds of environments. This is furniture that fits into our lives, and yet also transcends the everyday.
