The Charles MacPherson Academy is pleased to announce that it is now offering two different courses in Housekeeping: Housekeeping 101 & Advanced Housekeeping Since the establishment of Charles MacPherson Associates, we have taught and trained domestic and service staff around the world in settings that include homes from 3,000 to 80,000 square feet, from luxury ocean liners to luxury hotels in glamorous destinations. Over and over, we hear from our diverse clientele that they wish for a school that teaches housekeeping as a profession. We have listened and responded. Effective Household Management begins with Good Housekeeping As with the Academy for Butlers & Household Managers, the mandate for both Housekeeping 101 and Advanced Housekeeping is to teach the essential skills required to turn out professionals who meet the expectations of today s luxury homeowners and luxury hotels. Housekeeping 101 is an introductory or refresher course. And as its name suggests, Advanced Housekeeping teaches skills at an Executive Housekeeper level.
Laboratory Setting In a laboratory setting, students have access to the industry s best tools, equipment and products. The school is very proud to have Miele Inc., the prestigious manufacturer of household, kitchen and laundry appliances as a corporate sponsor. We believe that if our graduates are expected to work with the best equipment once they are employed, they should also be taught with the best and most up to date tools of their trade. The Charles MacPherson Academy is located in Toronto, Canada under the direction of Charles P. MacPherson. Charles brings over 21 years experience both as a Major Domo for one of Canada s most prominent families and as the founder and Chairman of Charles MacPherson Associates Inc. Over the past 12 years, the firm has offered placement, advisory and consulting services, residential management software and training to the Luxury Residential and the Luxury Hospitality markets world wide. Professional Instructors Charles MacPherson Associates Inc. brings a commitment to excellence to all its enterprises and the Academy is no exception to this approach. Each of the instructors at the Academy brings a minimum of 10 years experience in their respective fields. The Academy is located at 507 King Street East in Toronto, Canada in a purpose-built facility that is designed to be setup in differing configurations to meet the requirements of the various classes. The lecture and laboratory approach offers students the opportunity of actually practicing all of the required skills with the finest of china, silver, crystal and clothing, laundry and cleaning equipment.
Housekeeping 101 Housekeeping 101 is taught in a single day. This introductory course has been developed as a refresher class that is ideal for the individual who is new to the domestic field or whose skills simply require some fine-tuning and re-focusing. The class attempts to cover as much material as possible without compromising the quality of the information. Course highlights include: course description Introduction to Housekeeping Students receive straightforward instruction on the best process and most efficient techniques for cleaning a household. Product Overview Students will learn about the different kinds of cleaning products commercially available along with best practices for their application and a discussion of how many products you really need. Sanitizing The focus will be on how to sanitize a bathroom and kitchen. Students will learn the fundamentals of preventing dangerous cross-contamination. Fine Surface Care Students will receive basic instruction on cleaning and maintaining the various fine surfaces they will encounter in a household. Laundry & Ironing Includes a review of fabric types, laundry symbol chart, pre-treatment and stain removal tips and best practices for hand ironing and steaming clothes.
Advanced Housekeeping Advanced Housekeeping is taught over a 5-day period. The Charles MacPherson Academy has a syllabus and curriculum for Advanced Housekeeping that all instructors follow. The material covered is intensive and the highlights below are a brief introduction of what is covered in this comprehensive course. The course is intended for people who are working in the industry and want to bring their skills to a higher executive level. course description Day 1 Housekeeping Methodology & Technique During this introductory class, students are provided a background to Housekeeping that includes descriptions of how to perform a Trash & Tidy, a Daily Clean, Room Detailing and a Seasonal Deep Clean. They will also receive a cleaning product & housekeeping tool overview that includes common commercial brands, green products as well as homemade recipes. Day 2 Cleaning & Sanitizing Key Areas within the Household This essential class for any Housekeeper teaches best practices for cleaning and sanitizing kitchens, bathrooms and other problem areas within households. There is a rigorous examination of common cross contamination mistakes and how to prevent them and students will learn the preferred products and tools for sanitizing different surfaces like cutting boards, laminate, stainless steel, marble and wood surfaces.
Day 3 Laundry Using high-end Miele Inc. washers and dryers, students will have a hands-on lesson in the current best practices for laundry. Students will learn to differentiate between fabrics and how to launder them. They will also receive instruction on the gathering, storing and sorting of laundry as well as stain removal and pre-treatment instructions. Additionally, students will be taught hand washing techniques and fabric blocking while flat drying. Day 4 Ironing & Steaming Another hands-on class teaches students best practices for using a hand iron, Miele Inc. rotary iron and how to use a clothes steamer. Students learn how to iron or steam a range of fabrics including wool, cotton, silk, linen and manmade fibers. Folding techniques for towels, sheets and clothing will also be instructed. Day 5 Organization & Specialized Skills This class teaches optimal approaches for organizing a Housekeeper s day, week or month. Students are taught how often specific tasks should be performed and the pitfalls of over-cleaning as well as under-cleaning. In this finishing class, students will also receive instruction in the specialized areas of cleaning jewelry, the do s and don ts of cleaning artwork, cleaning makeup brushes and utensils as well as information on the care of plants and floral arrangements.

Applicants or their sponsors register by contacting Charles MacPherson Associates Inc. and enrolling for a scheduled class. Payment may be made by cheque or credit card. Housekeeping 101 Duration: 8 Hours Lunch is included Classes occur the first Saturday of every month Starting February 7, 2009.
