I had often admired the oak flooring in a particular shop and when I found out it was closing down I asked if I could buy the floor, but the shop s owners refused. As the date of them vacating the premises drew nearer, I kept popping in and asking again, until eventually my persistence wore them down: they agreed and I bought the whole lot! Once in situ in Bernard s third-floor apartment, each plank was hand-stripped to reveal a warm, natural honey colour. Helped by a friend of his, interior designer Bonita O Donnell, Bernard started planning how to create the relaxed, Hamptonsstyle home he wanted. In the past decade, Bernard has lived in Bahrain, the Dutch Caribbean and New Orleans, and attributes his eclectic decorating approach to his travels. I m always on the look-out for interesting finds I rarely get on a flight without some bizarrely wrapped parcel as hand luggage! Evidence of this is scattered all over the apartment the turquoise lamp in the living room was a purchase from a consignment store in New Orleans that actually formed the basis of the entire space s colour scheme. The vibrant yellow lamp in the study, meanwhile, was spotted in the window of a closed boutique in Philadelphia, but after much hammering on the door, the sale was made. Nine chairs were bought from the Aviation Club when its bar, The Cellar, closed down and they have been painted in shades of antique white or soft grey. I really like mixing and matching things, Bernard explains. I got the idea for having different dining chairs from a magazine feature about a bar in Oslo that had a variety of chairs I loved the finished look and wanted to replicate it. Sometimes a dining experience can be a bit too formal, but having mismatched pieces of furniture makes it feel more relaxed and casual. 50 Fabulous decorating Stylish buys 51 DECORATING colour trends Uplifting effects A touch of drama Coral a pink with peachy tones is a refreshing choice, working well with a variety of complementary shades or neutrals.
