Risk Assessment: This Risk Assessment is to be used as a general guide and as such, cannot accommodate all the varying factors that may be encountered when using this equipment. Therefore, personnel are requested to conduct their own Risk Assessment before using this equipment to include any extra hazards introduced by the task performed. TASK PERFORMED Providing a constant supply of cooled water to Transfer apparatus to counteract the heating of Transfer solutions by Electrical current. 1. Burns from Hot or Cool Temperatures 2. Spills HAZARDS RISK ASSESSMENT 1. The risk of using the Refrigerated Cooling Waterbath is low under normal operation. RISK CONTROL 1. Check temperature setting is at 4 o C. 2. Ensure that tubing is in good condition and connections from Cooling Waterbath are sound. 3. Before draining allow liquid to cool below 50 o C, or heat above 5 o C. Drain using a hand syphon pump. 4. Ensure that tubing is in good condition and connections from Cooling Waterbath are sound. Use tubing suitable for cool temperatures. 5. Disconnect the power supply before moving, filling or emptying the tank. 6. Clean up any spills promptly and isolate area until dry. 7. Wear lab coat and enclosed shoes when handling cooling waterbath. 8. Training should be undertaken in General Laboratory Safety. Attachment 9.1: Manual for Cooling Circulation-Thermostat UKT2 Type and function: KB 300 Cooling bath without temperature regulation and water circulation for temperatures down to -40 C. KTH 5 small thermostat with pressure pump and bridge The cooling bath KB300 and the Thermostat KHT5 complement one another. Both instruments are attuned to one another in such a way that they add up to a modern powerful cooling circulation-thermostat. The thermostat can be used in a temperature range from -40 C to +50 C. A few degrees above room temperature the cooling system has to be switched off. At -25 C the temperature constancy is -0.05 C. cooling bath KB300 Electrical connection: Voltage (V), current (Amp) and frequency (Hz) are indicated on the type plate on the front plate. For safety reasons this device has to be connected to a power point with protective earthing only. Independent from the main switch is the supply voltage carried over to a shockproof power point at the back of the instrument. There you can connect an additional device such as the thermostat KTH5, an attachable thermostat or a stirring device. The power point is fused with replaceable fuses 2x10 Amp. Operation: The main switch turns the connected device on and off. The activated operating state is indicated by the lighting up of a control lamp in the rocker switch. Connected to an attachable thermostat the cooling bath can also be used for work with bath temperatures up to +50 C. For that purpose of course the compressor has to be turned off at first so that no improper long lasting over-operation occurs. Bath container and isolation: The bath container consists of stainless steel. Screw thread sockets are fit in four places on the upper edge. Here bars can be screwed in which are available as additional equipment. The screw thread sockets are also needed for the fixation of the two-piece device cover plate. The cold- and heat proof isolation is up to 50 mm thick, so that working temperatures from less than -40 C to more than +50 C are possible.

Evaporator: The pipes of the evaporator are nickel-plated copper pipes and are located in the bath container. They are in direct contact with the fluid in the bath and should be covered completely with the coolant to achieve best cooling performance. Coolants: Suitable coolants mustn t be reactive against copper or nickel. Their solidification point should be should be always 10 C- 20 C lower than the desired working temperature. The best coolants are fluids that are capable of mixing with water (Glycerin, Ethanol), so that condensing water will not fall out in the bath as ice crystals. Maintenance: To clean the inside of the device the rear panel has to be removed. For this purpose only the two little screws on the bottom edge of the rear panel have to be unscrewed. The cooling circulation system is locked hermetically and needs not to be maintained. The motor of the ventilator has lifetime lubrication and should just be cleaned from dust and debris from time to time. Also the condenser should be cleaned by blowing out with air pressure. From the outside the device can be cleaned with a moist towel. Parts: All drive elements and regulatory elements are easily replaceable. To order parts it is only necessary to indicate the part, the type and the number of the device. Small thermostat KTH5 with pressure pump and bridge Preparations: Place the thermostat on top of the cooling bath. The screw thread sockets of the bath are to be fit into the drill-holes of the cover plate, which should be sufficient to fix the thermostat into place. Fit the contact thermometer in (compare with figure), plug the blade terminal into the pair of plug sockets at the rear panel of the container. Circulation pump: The circulation pump is built as a pressure pump. It has a maximal flow rate of 7.5 l/min. The maximum delivery height is 1.7 m WS. The maximum flow rate can be reduced with hose clamp. All parts that are in contact with the fluid are made of stainless steel. If no device is connected that requires the maintaining of a desired temperature, the pump has to be short-circuited with a short piece of hose.

Initial operation: The instrument has to be connected to a power point with a voltage of 220 V or 110 V respectively. Please confirm that the voltage is the right one. The power point is located at the rear panel of the cooling bath. Turn the rocker switch on, the activated operating state is indicated by the lighting up of a control lamp in the rocker switch. The pump and the heating apparatus work simultaneously. Heater: Two heating stages are available in this instrument; the maximum performance is 350 Watt. According to the required temperature range and the bath volume you can choose the stage 50% or 100% by pushing the button Heizung to I or II. The adjustment of the heating performance will result in better temperature constancy. The lighting up of a control lamp above the switch indicates the heating period. Regulation of the temperature: The desired temperature can be adjusted with the rotary magnet of the contact thermometer. A more accurate adjustment is possible with the aid of a control thermometer if necessary. If the temperature is reached, the current which is required for the heating is switched off by the relay and the control lamp turns off. If the temperature drops under the adjusted value the current will get switched on again by itself. This procedure will repeat itself continuously so that the temperature of the thermostat fluctuates permanently a little bit around the adjusted value. Protection: The instrument is protected against capacity overload with a fuse 4 Amp FF. To exchange the fuse the square-end button (Fuse-Pull) has to be pulled out. Maintenance: The instrument is designed for continuous-operation and doesn t require any maintenance if used normally. Supplement: Heating stages. Recommended heating stages for the temperature ranges given below: +4 C to +29 C +29 C to +50 C Stage II (100%) with cooling Stage I (50%) without cooling Translated by Ingo Lehmann
