Product Information Chapter 2 2.2 Brief Description The hot water storage tank is a combination of a hot water storage tank and an instantaneous water heater. The pressureless storage water serves as the heat storage medium. Useful heat is supplied and removed via the pressureless storage water. The domestic hot water is supplied and removed via the spiral corrosion resistant heat exchanger, which is made from corrugated stainless steel pipe and is completely immersed in the storage tank water. The cold water, flows in when the hot water is drawn off, is first routed to the very bottom of the heat exchanger of the storage tank, where it cools the lower zone of the storage tank as much as possible. The standby zone is heated by an external heat generator(s). (Condensing boiler(s), heating pump(s), solar panels). The potable water continually absorbs heat from the storage tank water on its way up the heat exchanger. The direction of flow by the counter current principle and the helical shape of the heat exchanger creates a distinct temperature layering in the storage tank. As high temperatures can continue in the top area of the storage tank, it can achieve a high hot water output even on long tapping cycles. The SUN Equinox heating system can, in addition to an external heat generator, also be heated by solar power. Depending on how much solar energy is available, the entire storage tank can be heated up. The stored heat is used for hot water generation as well as for the heating support. The high total storage capacity also temporarily allows for periods when the sun does not shine to be bridged. All external heat generators used with the SUN Equinox must be supplied or approved by Solar Usage Now. 2.3 Advantages 2.3.1 Optimum water hygiene Low flow or unheated zones on the domestic water side are completely excluded with the hot water storage tank. It is impossible for sludge, rust or other sediments to be deposited, as can be the case with other large volume tanks. The water which is fed into the system first is also discharged first. (First in, first out principle). 2.3.2 Low maintenance and corrosion The hot water storage tank is made of plastic and is completely corrosion-free. Sacrificial anodes or similar anti-corrosion units are not necessary. This means that associated maintenance work, e.g. Changing the protective anodes or cleaning the storage tank, does not need to be carried out on the hot water storage tank. Only the fill level of the storage tank water needs to be checked. The corrugated stainless steel pipe heat exchangers on the heating and domestic water side are made from high quality stainless steel. 2.3.3 Low scaling On the storage tank side only one deposition of scale is possible. The external heating components therefore remain clean, as do the stainless steel heat exchanger pipes in the storage tank water. This means that no scale can build up which would continuously reduce the efficiency of heat transfer in the course of operation. (As is the case with other storage tank designs). Solar Usage Now LLC All Rights Reserved SUN Equinox Owners and Operations Manual Page 8

Product Information Chapter 2 The thermal, pressure expansion and high flow rates in the domestic water heat exchanger release any possible scale deposits, which are then flushed away. 2.3.4 Economical operation The full-area heat insulation of the storage tank ensures very low heat loss. Allowing for the best use of the heat energy being applied. 2.3.5 Modular extension facility If the heat output of a single hot water storage tank is not adequate, one can interconnect several storage tanks. If Major damage is apparent, do not lift the package to the site without prior approval from Solar Usage Now. The SUN Equinox is tested and inspected prior to packing to ensure goods are in order and good condition at time of dispatch. 3.5 Installation Guidelines To be installed by licensed HVAC and plumbing personnel Installer must ensure cold water connection does not exceed a pressure of > 8 psi. 3.5.1 Placing and Installing the main heating Unit Be sure to read the Installation and operation manual of the main heating unit. All heating units are to be supplied or approved by Solar Usage Now. Place the main heating unit(s) Establish a connection between the cold water inlet of the main heating unit(s) to the cold water outlet of the main heating unit(s). Establish a connection between the hot water outlet of the main heating unit(s) to the hot water inlet of the storage tank(s). Be sure to use a connection material that can handle temperatures = > 180 ºF. It is recommended to use copper tube. 3.5.2 Solar Power A few helpful tips to protect the system s warranty and ensure that it will run properly. All drain back system collectors are tilted 1/4 per linear foot toward the return side to prevent damage. The controller s collector sensor gets placed on the return side of the collector Circuit setters are placed on the supply side and air bleeds on the return side of each row of collectors Solar Usage Now LLC All Rights Reserved SUN Equinox Owners and Operations Manual Page 15

Set-up & Installation Chapter 3 If your package includes Solar power as a backup or preheat heat source. Be sure to read and understand the installation and operation manual of the Solar power system. Only solar panels supplied or approved by Solar Usage Now may be utilized. Establish a connection between the cold solar supply of the storage tank(s) to the cold water inlet of the solar panel(s). Establish a connection between the hot water outlet of the solar panel(s) to the solar hot water inlet of the storage tank(s). 3.5.3 Cold water connection For domestic water connection observe the stipulations of Local and State Plumbing Codes. Be sure to add heat traps whenever possible in an effort to reduce heat loss. It is recommended by Solar Usage Now to install an efficient thermal insulation to all pipe work. The cold water connection must not exceed a pressure of 8 psi. If a higher pressure is present in the domestic water pipe, a pressure reducer will need to be installed. Connect the pressure relief line to the safety pressure relief valve and the membrane expansion tank as per State and Local plumbing codes. 3.5.4 Mixing Valves A mixing valve able to mix down 180 o F water sufficiently is required to be placed on the potable hot water supply line to mix down the temperature to prevent burns and scalding. 3.5.5 Filling the Heat Exchanger Open the shutoff device of the cold water line. Open the bleeding point for hot water so that as little bleeding as possible can be set. Set-up & Installation Chapter 3 3.5.6 Filling the Storage tank(s) It is now safe to fill the storage tanks. Fill the storage tank(s) with cold water until water flows out of the safety overflow connection(s). 3.5. Make up water tank Connection Due to atmospheric unpressurized water being the heat exchanging medium, a small amount of evaporation is possible. To prevent the maintenance of constantly checking the tank water level, an auto fill ball float is fitted either inside the storage tank, or externally. Solar Usage Now takes the liberty of adding this component. All that is required on the installing end is the connection of the water line. In most cases the make up water connect will be tied into the potable cold water supply side. Be sure to check the established connection of the cold water to the make up device. Do not turn the make up supply on until the storage tank(s) are filled. 3.5.8 Controller The SUN Equinox comes with a controller for activating and deactivating the pumps to supply heat based on the demands of the domestic water and/or heating. If the system is a solar preheat only : A controller with a differential function will be utilized. A maximum difference between the solar panels and the storage tank water will activate the solar pump to gain the heat energy from the solar thermal collector(s). If the system is non-solar and utilizes an external main heat source such as a wall hung boiler. A controller with a thermostat function will be utilized. A minimum set point will activate the main heat pump to gain heat energy inside the storage tank until a shut off point is reached. If the system is both solar and gas A controller with a differential function and a thermostat function will be utilized. All controllers must be supplied with the package or approved by Solar Usage Now. All temperature settings are pre-set and changes must be approved by Solar Usage Now. Set-up & Installation Chapter 3 3.6 Connection of Multiple Storage Tanks To protect the system s warranty and ensure that it will run properly. Do not tamper or alter the flow of pipework, If changes need to be made contact Solar Usage Now. If the heat output of a single storage tank is not adequate, it is possible to connect several storage tanks in a modular fashion. The storage tank(s) depending on the amount connected, act as one large storage tank. Design The designs for multi storage tanks must be approved by Solar Usage Now. Installation Please review all previous installation instructions prior to this section as they do apply to multi connected storage tanks. Match the numeric color code on the manifold with the numeric color code on the storage tank. Use the provided connection sleeves to connect the area s where the copper was cut. (If required) Wire pumps and relays (If required). All controllers are pre programmed. If settings need to be changed, please contact Solar Usage Now. Commissioning Chapter 4 Warning! If not commissioned properly, a hot water storage tank can be a health and safety risk endangering human life and its operation may be adversely affected. The hot water storage tank may only be commissioned by authorised and trained heating experts. Caution! An incorrectly commissioned hot water storage tank can cause material damage. Observe the regulations in VDI 2035 in order to avoid corrosion and deposits. If the filling and top-up water has a high degree of hardness, measures must be taken to stabilize this hardness or soften the water and set the pressure of the reducer on the cold water connection to a maximum of 8psi. 4.1 Initial Commissioning 4.1.1 Requirements The hot water storage tank is set up and properly connected. The heating and hot water system have been filled and pressurized to the correct pressure. The hot water storage tank is filled to the overflow point. 4.1.2 Checks before commissioning Check all connections for leakage. 4.2 Commissioning Check all the points on the enclosed checklist. Make a record of the test results and sign it, together with the operator. If an electric immersion heater element is fitted, set the desired storage tank water temperature. Switch on the main supply switch on the heat generator. Wait for the start phase. Solar Usage Now LLC All Rights Reserved SUN Equinox Owners and Operations Manual Page 20
