Adachi Museum of Art s Gardens Named Number One for 15th Consecutive Year Adachi s Gardens top the 2017 Shiosai Project: Garden Rankings of Japan List The gardens of the Adachi Museum of Art have been named number one in the 2017 Shiosai Project: Garden Rankings of Japan, which is organized by The Journal of Japanese Gardening (JOJG), an American special-interest magazine. 2017 s results mark the 15th consecutive year in which the Adachi museum s gardens have achieved the top spot in this top-fifty ranking, which is conducted by about thirty gardening experts from all over the world and targets over nine hundred locations in Japan. Results are decided based not on the historical significance, fame or scale of the gardens but on aspects such as their quality, balance with adjacent buildings and hospitality towards guests. The Adachi museum also received high praise from the October 2017 edition of the Michelin Green Guide Japon, a prominent French travel guide, which awarded the museum itself a grade of two out of three stars (worth the visit if you are traveling in the region) and the museum s gardens its highest ranking of three stars (worth the trip on their own). As always, the entire staff of the Adachi Museum of Art remains devoted towards creating an experience for its guests that is fully worthy of this high praise, no matter the time of year. We humbly and gratefully invite you to assist us in spreading the word about our gardens to any interested parties with whom you are affiliated. Adachi Museum of Art (Dry Landscape Garden) 1/5

About the Shiosai Project The Shiosai Project has ranked the top gardens in Japan based purely on their aesthetic beauty and quality, rather than their scale or fame, since 2003 and is organized by the American special-interest magazine, The Journal of Japanese Gardening. Established by Douglas Roth as a way to introduce Japanese gardens and gardening to the entire world, this bimonthly journal is circulated in 37 different, primarily English-speaking countries. The Shiosai Project: Garden Rankings of Japan Top Ten Rank Name Location Former Rank 1 Adachi museume of Art Shimane (1) 2 Katsura Rikyu (2) 3 Yamamoto-tei Tokyo (3) 4 Heian Hotel (4) 5 Kaui-en Minami Shimane (8) 6 Yokokan Fukui (5) 7 Sekitei(Teien no Yado) Hiroshima (12) 8 Ohori Koen Fukuoka (14) 9 Murin-an (6) 10 Kagetsu Yamanashi (22) As was the case in the previous year, seven gardens from Shimane Prefecture were listed in the top-fifty ranking: The Adachi Museum of Art (#1, Yasugi City), Kansui-en Minami (#5, Matsue City), Minami-kan Restaurant (#13, Matsue City), Choraku-en (#30, Matsue City), Hirata Honjin Kinen-kan (#32, Izumo City), Yushi-en (#41, Matsue City) and Koh-kou-ji (#43, Izumo City). Please see page five for the entire Shiosai Project ranking. 2/5

Evaluation of the Gardens Write-ups on the Shiosai Project s homepage praise the museum s dedication to garden maintenance, having opened every day for the 47 years since its foundation, as superb the best in Japan and also acclaim the gardens beauty with high compliments such as The scenic beauty of Adachi's various gardens is spectacular. In the November/December issue of The Journal of Japanese Gardening, which features the 2017 Shiosai Project ranking, an article titled Shimane Rising discusses Shimane Prefecture s prominence in the ranking, having occupied seven spots on the list, second only to s twelve. The article cites the Adachi Museum of Art s influence as a prominent reason for the abundance of superior gardens in Shimane with excerpts such as [The Adachi Museum of Art s gardens are]the best in the land - and perhaps the best in the world [and they are] just down the road. This has got to inspire some people and any serious Japanese garden enthusiast needs to make the pilgrimage to see the superstar: The Adachi Museum. It even goes so far as to describe the gardens as a mecca for garden lovers. About the Adachi Museum of Art s Gardens The Adachi Museum of Art and its gardens were founded in 1970 by Adachi Zenko (1899-1990) in his birthplace of Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture. Mr. Adachi directed the gardeners during the design and creation of the gardens, whose fundamental form was completed over the course of fifteen years. Since then, even more alterations have been made for the sake of expansion and maintenance, resulting in the gardens as they can now be seen today. Today the museum features six gardens, including its main garden, the Dry Landscape Garden, as well as the Reception Garden, Moss Garden, Pond garden, White Gravel and Pine Garden and the Juryu-an Tea House Garden. Including the borrowed mountain scenery, the total area of the gardens spans about 165,000 square meters and contains several kinds of foliage, such as about eight hundred Japanese red pines, one hundred Japanese black pines, satsuki azaleas, rhododendrons and Japanese maples. In order to maintain a coherent and harmonious balance between the gardens and their mountain backdrop, the museum staff performs maintenance on not only the gardens themselves but also on the borrowed landscape in the background. Every morning, before the museum opens, the professional gardening team, along with about thirty museum employees, cleans the gardens in preparation for the day ahead throughout which the gardening team performs in-depth maintenance. This preserves the gardens beauty throughout the year, so they can be appreciated by guests during every season. 3/5

A Message from the Director Fifteen Years as the Top Garden in Japan - Feelings of Deep Gratitude and Responsibility Adachi Takanori Director, Adachi Museum of Art As the year rolls to an end, no subject crosses my mind more than the announcement of the top garden ranking by the American special-interest magazine, The Journal of Japanese Gardening. The ranking, which is conducted by connoisseurs of Japanese gardens from all over the world who closely examine and evaluate gardens throughout Japan, is a ground-breaking endeavor made possible by the participants unbiased and impartial analyses and appraisals. Blessedly, the Adachi Museum of Art s gardens have earned the top honor in this ranking every year since its inception. As the number of foreign guests visiting the museum increases along with the overall popularity of Japanese gardens, the wait to discover the museum s position in the ranking each year grows more suspenseful. I am very pleased to announce that the Adachi Museum of Art s gardens were once again named number one in the 2017 ranking. This marks fifteen straight years as the number one garden in Japan, which is a source of great pride for me but also reminds me of the great responsibility I bear for ensuring that the gardens remain worthy of this honor. It would be unacceptable for me to become complacent, no matter how joyful I may be. A Japanese garden is a living thing; a lovely ensemble in which the grass, moss, white gravel, stones and water at your feet, the trees in the middle level and the mountains in the distance are harmoniously unified. It is not possible to maintain this precious scenery without careful and vigilant attention to its finest details. With an appropriate balance of pride and humility, I look forward to working together with the entire museum staff, starting with its professional gardening team, to share the beauty of Adachi Museum of Art s gardens with the entire world. 4/5
