Chase s Suggestions for Fall and Tips for the End of the Year Cold weather is on the way. You may not like it but you and your Bonsai have to be ready. No more fertilizer and cut down on the water unless it s really hot. Tropical Indoor Bonsai should be inside by now. As we bring them in we treat each tree with systemic insecticide followed by a good watering. The Bonsai are kept in bright south windows on humidity trays. If you do not have good light think about some type of artificial lighting, there are many good bulbs on the market. The first week we give the trees some Super Thrive and fertilizer (we like Dina Grow) about twice a month. Do not panic if you have some leaf drop. For your Temperate Bonsai, winter storage has to be ready and clean. Our Bonsai are kept in a lean to type of structure while the large Bonsai are mulched in an area out of the wind and protected by deer fencing. All the outside Bonsai are sprayed with Lime Sulphur which can be purchased from local suppliers. If you did any fall repotting, try to keep the Bonsai from freezing. Trees that are going to be displayed in one of the winter shows should be cleaned, unwired, free of weeds, with moss if needed, and pot cleaned with oil. The Bonsai should look like they ve never had hands working on them, they should look natural. Also get your display stands if needed. Have a great winter and if you plan on doing winter work like pruning, wiring and early potting, keep the trees from freezing. Remember to check watering and water as needed. We check our trees in storage about every 2 weeks. Chase Page 3
