AOB/Terminal Composting Objectives Capture pre-consumer organic material generated from food preparation areas in the Terminal Capture compostables from employee breakrooms Capture paper towels from public restrooms in Terminal Develop a composting program that is cost competitive with landfill costs 6

Metrics Totes weighed before pickup 15
Waste Management Hauling WMI picks up twice per week Used totes replaced with 30 clean totes 16
Metrics 350 lbs. of compostable material collected each day 6 tons per month 17
Results To Date In 2013 over 55 tons of organics diverted from landfill 50% of restroom paper towels captured 18
Economics WMI charges $850/month for hauling Landfill costs (hauling and tipping fees) $59.35/ton DIA must capture 14 tons/month to break even with landfill costs 19
Challenges Logistics and space Distance to staging area Limited space in kitchens Limited staging space on Concourse ramps Contamination Constant monitoring and random sorting Education Concessionaire s participation Recognition/PR Financial incentives Constant badgering 20
Additional Opportunities Post-consumer collection in Terminal and Concourse food courts Concourses A, B, and C food concessions (62 restaurants) Collect towel and paper products from public restrooms (100+) Airline food service kitchens South Terminal hotel and restaurants 21
PLASTIC FILM BALER 22
PLASTIC FILM BALER Audit indicates significant amount of plastic film sent to landfill. Generated primarily at AOB loading dock, joint use cargo area, air couriers, and stockroom. Product must be baled for cost effectiveness and transported to Materials Recycling Facility. 23
COSTS Materials/Supplies/Equipment..$16,041.42 Installation $ 4,028.00 RREO Grant...$21,600.00 24
Baler installed at the joint use cargo building 25
Collection containers placed in satellite locations such as the AOB loading dock and stockroom 26
Joint use cargo tenants and other operators invited to participate 27
Bale is made and transported to storage area 28
Bales staged for pick-up by Waste Management, Inc. 29
Metrics 15,000 pounds of plastic film have been collected. Waste Management hauls the product at no cost. $200/ton rebates for delivered product. $59.35/ton avoided landfill hauling/disposal cost. 30
