Free Report Reading Time: Around 3 minutes. The Dangers of Halogen Down-Lights Across Australia, hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed by fires started by old style halogen down-lights. There are millions of these lights still in use across the country and many of them are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Do You Have These Down-Lights In Your Home? Fire Danger The problem with halogen down-lights is the intense heat they generate during normal operation. The lamps can burn at over 300 degrees C which is plenty hot enough to start a fire in your ceiling. Poor Installation Due to the potential fire hazard with incorrectly installed down-lights there are strict regulations for installing these lights. There are restrictions on how close a light can be to flammable building materials such as timber trusses. Halogen down-lights must also be protected to prevent them being covered by insulation. These regulations are often ignored to cut costs, or because the installer isn t aware of the dangers. We have seen many cases where timber beams have been cut away to allow for the installation of a down-light. Often the timber is black and charred as a result of the lamp being so close. Even if your lights are installed correctly they can still be the source of a serious fire.

Birds, rats and mice can carry dry grass, paper and other flammable material into your roof space and build a nest on top of the light fittings. Down-lights installed in the eaves of a building are especially prone to this type of problem. Insulation Issues Down-lights that are covered by insulation are a big problem as excessive heat is trapped and concentrated in one area. Even when metal guard rings or fire resistant covers are used, a light covered by insulation can start a fire. A lack of care during the installation of the lights or insulation can result in a dangerous situation. High Maintenance Halogen down-lights are extremely high maintenance. They are always blowing globes and burning out transformers and lamp holders. These problems are caused by the high temperatures of the lights during normal operation. If you have a large number of halogen down-lights throughout your home you will be constantly buying new lamps to replace the lamps that have failed. You may also experience lights that run for a while and then go out, then turn themselves back on again at odd times. This is due to over-temperature cut-outs in the transformer switching the light off if it gets too hot. When it cools down again the light may come back on again by itself. High Running Costs Although halogen down-lights run on 12 volts, low voltage does not equal low power consumption.

They are still using 50 watts per lamp, and most of the energy consumed produces heat, not light. Installation of the recessed lights involved cutting a hole through the ceiling. These holes are not sealed or covered by insulation, so warm air from your heater can escape through the down-light holes into your ceiling space. This makes them quicker and easier to install, especially in confined spaces. LED down lights run cool so, with the right fitting, there are no restrictions on how close they can be placed to flammable materials. It s easier to mark out and install new lights and it makes them the ideal replacement for existing halogen down lights that have been installed incorrectly. A properly installed and undamaged LED light is very unlikely to cause any type of fire hazard. Even if a bird built a nest on one, there should be no danger of starting a fire. Insulation No Problem The LED down-lights that we use and recommend can be completely covered by insulation without a problem. This means no over-heating, so no lights turning themselves on and off, and no fire hazard. And the lights are sealed, so there is no gap for your heat to escape into the ceiling space. Low Maintenance LED down-lights have a much longer life span than halogen lights. A halogen lamp might last around 5,000 hours, whereas an LED fitting could last 10 times longer.

In an LED fitting there is no lamp to change, and no lamp holder to burn up, due to low operating temperatures. A good LED down-light will have a 2 or 3 year replacement warranty, as well.
