May 2014 GROW Tulsa Garden Center News Gardening by the Book Hostas 2435 S. They can be used in the landscape either as striking specimen plantings or as accommodating companion plants. A startling range of color through the seasons can be provided. They are a wonderful addition to the gardener s palette. Whether the garden is small or large, a container or a courtyard, there are hostas to suit. For a guide to the smaller leaf hostas that are ideally suited to containers, windowsills, and small gardens, try The Book of Little Hostas: 200 Small, Very Small and Mini Varieties (Timber Press, 2010). Some are simply scaleddown versions of classic hostas, while others offer new attributes in color, leaf shape or patterns. Some make better garden plants than others. The color photographs assist in displaying the best of these small plants. The Gardener s Guide to Growing Hostas (Timber Press, 1996) is a full and wide-ranging study. Diana Grenfell s original classic has advice on cultivation, propagation, garden uses. It also features an extensive plant directory. This is illustrated with photographs and pencil drawings to aid in identification. Planting ideas are numerous for the gardener. Hostas (Firefly Books, 2004) describe over 170 hosta species and cultivars including their discovery, cultivation and propagation. The inclusion of planting and landscape advice is helpful for the gardener. More than 200 photographs introduce these hardy versatile perennials. A list of suitable companion plants is provided to enhance and complement the hosta planting. Hostas: An Essential Guide (Crowood Press, 2010) details all aspects of their care and cultivation. This in depth look is illustrated with 250 color photographs and 195 drawings. There is an incredible variation of choices, whether habitat, size, shape, texture or color of the species and leaves. Additional sections on propagation, containers, pest and diseases complete this practical guide. New Encyclopedia of Hostas (Timber Press, 2009) is the second edition of Diana Grenfell s classic work. Her knowledge and Michael Shadrack s photographs combine to make this a definitive volume. Detailed easy to read descriptions include growing tips, landscape recommendations, and companion plant suggestions. Timber Press Pocket Guide to Hostas (Timber Press, 2007) is a small sized but informative guide also by Diana Grenfell. She and distinguished photographer Michael Shadrack feature 280 of the best hostas. They were selected for their performance in the landscape. This book includes meticulous botanical details to aid in plant identification and selection, precise cultivation notes and brief comparisons to 545 similar and related hostas.
