Biostrate BioStrate : Grow-Tech s Biobased Growing Medium This lightweight biobased textile is designed for the hydroponic production of microgreens and salad greens. BioStrate absorbs and retains water while providing an optimal environment for dense healthy root development. The blend of biopolymers and natural fibers is designed to manage water efficiently for optimal growth in a variety of hydroponic systems. BioStrate is compostable*. However, it will maintain its structural integrity for the entire crop cycle and won t clog filters. Custom widths and pre-cut shapes are available. BioStrate Felt was developed in-house and is manufactured in Maine. Our design emphasizes all the qualities growers requested in a hydroponic medium: high performance, promotion of dense healthy roots and shoots, and ease of use. Specialty Products Specialty Products FlexiMix FlexiMats Grower Solutions FlexiMix is a peat based potting soil that is manufactured in a process similar to Grow-Tech s FlexiPlugs. The resulting rooting sponge is then shredded into a granular material. FlexiMix has high air filled porosity and a uniquely high water holding capacity. This means not only greater water retention but an aggregate structure that will not allow over watering. FlexiMix resists soil compaction longer than traditional mixes which makes it an excellent choice for urban plantings such as street trees and turf repair in high traffic areas. The FlexiMat is made from the same material as the FlexiPlug and has all the same attributes: uniformity, optimal aeration and water retention. This product is an excellent rooting medium and ideal for growing microgreens and specialty greens in both hydroponic systems and traditional greenhouses. The standard FlexiMat fits a 10 x 20 tray. However, a variety of thicknesses and dimensions are available. Grow-Tech has the capability and experience to research and develop products for specific applications. Best practices when using Grow-Tech s Products FlexiPlugs & FlexiTrays Transplanting BioStrate Best Practices FlexiPlugs and FlexiTrays arrive premoistened. Add water only if needed. Moisten the felt with mist or a quick dip in a water bath. Let excess water drain. Mist seeds / water in cuttings. When watering a good indicator that the medium is fully saturated is when 10%-15% of the water drains out. Sprinkle seeds according to the seed seller s recommendation. BioStrate can support tightly packed seedlings. Watering requirements will change based on type of plant and the growing environment. Monitor as needed. FlexiPlugs have excellent water retention characteristics so be sure not to overwater. Place in germinating area for 48 hours or as conditions require. BioStrate performs best when moist.
