Improving Your EHS Efforts Moving Beyond OSHA Compliance Mark Briggs, CSP Mark@SafetyManagementResources.Com 217 840 0235

Some long for the moment that they are finally in compliance with OSHA... Others realize that there is much more to life than chapters and subchapters!

Yes indeed! OSHA truly is only the proverbial Tip of the iceberg There are so many more laws, regulations, codes, statutes, and standards. And... countless guidelines, consensus standards, best practices, recommended practices, and on, and on, and on...

What we don t need are more three-ring binders filled with worthless programs. Agreed? What we need is an efficient, effective means of addressing our EHS needs.

One approach to consider...

Another option... Keep running around like chickens with our heads cut off...

Or perhaps you re tired of feeling like you spend every day putting out fires? Perhaps it is time for a new approach??

A new and improved approach: Develop an organized, priority-based approach to your EHS needs. And the good news is that there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Lots of great wheels are ready for your use!

So many great resources...

Who are these organizations? American National Standards Institute/ANSI.org American Society of Mechanical Engineers/ASME.org American Society of Safety Engineers/ASSE.org American Society for Testing and Materials/ASTM.org British Standards Institute/BSIGroup.com International Organization for Standardization/ISO.org National Fire Protection Association/NFPA.org Occupational Safety & Health Admin./OSHA.gov Underwriter s Laboratory/UL.com

They have so much to offer : Excellent framework/management systems Consensus standards Best practices Sample programs ready to tailor Peer support Training materials

BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Provides a framework for EHS management Develop the policies, procedures and controls in the most efficient and effective manner Soon to be replaced by ISO 45001

ISO 45001 A new International Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Expected to be released early in 2016 Support implementation of a framework that identifies and controls health and safety risks Reduce potential accidents Aid in legislative compliance Improve overall EHS/RM performance Support integration with existing management systems

ANSI/ASSE Z490.1 Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health & Environmental Training Establishes criteria for safety, health and environmental training programs, including development, delivery, evaluation and program management.

ANSI Z10 Occupational Health and Safety Management System - Management Leadership - Employee Involvement - Planning - Evaluation & Corrective Action - Management Review

ANSI A10.33 Safety and Health Program Requirements for Multi-Employer Projects Identifies the minimum elements and activities of a program that defines the duties and responsibilities of construction employers working on a construction project where multiple employers are engaged in a construction project.

ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management Principles and Guidelines Provides principles, framework, and a process for managing risk. Supporting documents: IEC 31010:2009 Risk management -- Risk assessment techniques ISO 31000:2009 Risk management -- Principles and guidelines ISO Guide 73:2009 Risk management Vocabulary Guidance for the Implementation of ISO 31000-2014

Consensus Standards/Best Practices "National consensus standard" means any standard or modification thereof which: (1)has been adopted and promulgated by a nationally recognized standards-producing organization under procedures whereby persons interested and affected by the scope or provisions of the standard have reached substantial agreement on its adoption (2)was formulated in a manner which afforded an opportunity for diverse views to be considered. *Paraphrased from 29 USCS 652 (9) [Title 29. Labor; Chapter 15. Occupational Safety and Health]

Examples of Consensus Standards that You May Find Useful: ANSI B11 Performance Criteria for Machine Safeguarding A92.2 Aerial Work Platforms A10 Construction & Demolition Standards Z359.1 Fall Protection Z15.1 Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations Z117 Confined Space Entry A1264 Slip Resistance on Walking/Working Surfaces

National Fire Protection Association 10 Portable Fire Extinguishers 13 Installation of Sprinkler Systems 30 Flammable & Combustible Liquids Code 33 Spray Application of Flammable Materials 45 Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals 70E Electrical Safety in the Workplace 101 Life Safety Code 350 Guide for Confined Space Entry Work

And a few other favorites... ISO.org Environmental Management 14000 Ergonomics ISO 10075 NIOSH.gov Elements of Ergonomics Programs: A Primer Ergonomic Guidelines for Manual Material Handling

And to bring it back to OSHA... Just because it s not the law, doesn t mean it s not valuable information! My two favorite OSHA standards that are not standards: Ergonomics https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_ta ble=federal_register&p_id=16305 https://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_ta ble=federal_register&p_id=16311 and...
