Spouse Programme Spouse Programme Itinerary Thursday, April 16, 2015 Welcome dinner for delegates and spouses, and a separate get-together of spouses on the side-line as ice-breaker. Friday, April 17, 2015 After breakfast at the hotel, spouses will proceed on a city tour. Delhi is a city built and re-built seven times over several centuries. The national capital of India is a quaint mix of diverse elements, different historical eras, and is bustling with activity. Our journey begins in Old Delhi with Jama Masjid as the first stop. The largest mosque in India it can accommodate up to 25,000 devotees in its courtyard at one time the Jama Masjid was commissioned in 1644, by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. However, it was the last of the Mughal architectures to be completed in India. We will take a cycle rickshaw ride down the Jama Masjid, Old Delhi gullies (lanes) of Chandni Chowk, one of the busiest and oldest shopping districts of Delhi. It has been around for more than three centuries and was frequented by merchants from Turkey, China and Holland. You may find here curios, souvenirs and attar (natural perfumes) to take back home. Thereafter, we will drive past Red Fort, the residence of Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years till 1857 and the seat of Mughal capital till 1857. The Red Fort bears witness to some of the iconic cultural and historical events of India including the flag hoisting on India s Independence on August 15, 1947. 2
Our next stop will be Lodi The Garden Restaurant. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens, spread over 90 acres and holding some of the famous architectural works of the 15th century like Mohammed Shah's tomb, Sikander Lodi's tomb, Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad. After lunch, we will proceed to Humayun s Tomb, the first Persian-style garden-tomb to be built in India. This will be followed by a trip to the Santushti Shopping Complex located in the diplomatic neighbourhood of Chanakyapuri. The Complex is a cluster of designer boutiques and has a curated garden courtyard. You can find here one-off creations, both traditional and contemporary, home furnishings, ayurvedic Humanyun s Tomb, New Delhi beauty products, silverware, gem embossed jewellery, paintings, leather goods, handicraft, and oddball antiques, by some of India s notable designers and artists. Return to hotel in the evening to a gala Rajasthani theme dinner. Authentic ambience, food and trinkets from Rajasthan will be available. Saturday, April 18, 2015 An Art of Living session under master teachers will be held where they will share insights into the power of right breathing, yoga and meditation. Lodhi Gardens, New Delhi An exhibition cum sale by master craftsmen from the Kashmir Valley will follow. You can 3
purchase genuine pashmina shawls from them. Mid-morning tea with tea blenders from the hills of Darjeeling, who will give a live demonstration of brewing a perfect cup of infused teas. Time permitting, we will go on a last day shopping trip to the sprawling Ambience Mall, where you can pick up Indian to global brands. Return to the hotel for lunch. Post lunch, you and your spouse can chose to visit India s only Broadway Kingdom of Dreams** to catch a live Bollywood style musical show. Leisure Activities Programme Same-Day Trip to Agra (Optional) Sunday, April 19, 2015 An invigorating early morning drive via the Taj Expressway to Agra (175 kms/3 hrs). Akbarabad, as Agra was known during the Mughal era, is home to some of the most magnificent Mughal architectures. Situated on the banks of river Yamuna, Agra is the third largest city of the state of Uttar Pradesh and is home to three UNESCO world heritage sites. The Taj Mahal, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It took approximately 22 years, nearly 22,000 labourers and a thousand elephants to build this exotic ode to love. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra A leisurely lunch at The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra, follows the Taj visit as a signature celebration to a memorable trip. We expect to return back to New Delhi by around 7 pm.
