Town of Wakefield Automated Refuse Collection The automated barrels must be used in order for trash to be collected. Additional information is available on the DPW web page on the Town of Wakefield website www.wakefield.ma.us/public-works. Questions can be directed to the Wakefield DPW at 781-246-6301 ext. 4120 or via email DPW@wakefield.ma.us Single Stream Manual Recycling The Town has an every-other-week single stream manual recycling program that is designated as red and blue weeks. Recycling materials are combined in the same container without sorting. Residents can use a trash barrel or their existing recycling container. Barrels used for recycling must be clearly marked with a recycling sticker. Stickers can be obtained, free of charge, at the Wakefield DPW office at the Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street. Refuse Container Damage Issues The blue containers provided have a ten-year warranty and are repaired by the company as long as it is normal wear and tear. If you have any of the following issues, please contact the DPW at 781-246-6301, ext. 4120, or dpw@wakefield.ma.us Cracked container Lid issues Wheel issues The DPW will make arrangements to have the container repaired. Town of Wakefield Automated Trash Collection Program The Town of Wakefield implemented an automated refuse trash collection program on September 29, 2014. This automated system helps to increase recycling rates, improve operations and the environment, reduce the cost of refuse collection and disposal, and provide for a clean community. This is a FREE trash collection program for four family residences or less. Each household received one refuse container from the town; legal 2, 3, and 4 family households that currently receive Town refuse collection received one refuse container for each legal unit. Residents have the opportunity to buy special event bags at a cost of $10 for five (5) bags for large amounts of trash after a barbecue, holiday or party. Information is provided in this pamphlet. Each container has a serial number allowing them to be tracked if lost or stolen. DPW personnel have recorded each container number, along with the name and address of the resident. Instructions as to placement at curbside is provided in this booklet. Single Stream Manual Recycling The single stream manual curbside recycling program began July 1st, 2014. The recycling program is an every-other week program. Residents use their existing recycling containers or a trash barrel with a recycling sticker. Stickers are available at Town Hall at no cost. The recycling program allows all materials to be placed in the same container; residents will not need to separate cans, bottles, plastics, paper, cardboard, etc. This will help increase recycling at curbside. There is no limit to the number of recycling containers that can be put out during the designated week. The Town of Wakefield residential refuse collection and curbside recycling programs White goods: White goods are picked up during the last FULL week of the month on your regular trash day. Stickers are required and can be obtained at the DPW office at the Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street or online at www.wakefield.ma.us/public-works. The cost as of July 2017 is $20 per item. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Wakefield. Online fees will apply for purchases made on the website. refuse collection: The refuse collection method is an automated refuse collection program. This automated system uses a special truck, equipped with a mechanical/robotic arm that automatically lifts and empties special trash containers. This system helps reduce trash, increase recycling, improve operations, improve the environment, reduce the cost of refuse collection and disposal, and provide for a clean community. containers: The automated refuse collection program provides residents with an assigned refuse container for use with the automated refuse collection operation. Each single-family household with municipal trash collection will receive one refuse container assigned by the Town of Wakefield. Legal 2, 3, and 4-family households that currently receive Town refuse collection will receive one container for each legal unit. All containers are the property of the Town of Wakefield and must be left at the place of residence upon change of ownership/tenancy. Each container has a serial number that allows tracking if the container is lost or stolen. A record will be maintained by the DPW with the address associated with each container and the serial number. Each refuse container can hold a substantial amount of trash. Residents can buy special event bags at a cost of five (5) bags for $10 if they anticipate a large amount of trash after a barbecue, holiday or party. An additional container is available for an annual rental fee if your refuse is traditionally excessive. Residents are encouraged to try the program before renting an additional container or purchasing overflow bags. container size and instructions: TVs/CRTs: These items are picked up at curbside on the last FULL week of the month on your regular trash day. Online fees will apply for purchases made on the website. hazardous waste/commercial refuse/construction debris: Collection of hazardous waste material, commercial refuse and construction debris is prohibited and is strictly enforced. Yard waste: Yard waste; i.e.: brush, branches, trees, leaves, grass clippings, etc., are prohibited from the Town s refuse collection. All yard waste should be brought to the Nahant Street Yard Waste Site during specified openings from April to early December or you can take advantage of the three (3) curbside yard waste collection days that occur annually. The Nahant Street Yard Waste Site requires an annual permit, which can be purchased for $25.00 at the DPW Office at the Town Hall, or online at www.wakefield.ma.us/publicworks. Yardwaste can not be disposed with regular household trash. Fines will be issued. curbside recycling The curbside recycling program is a single stream manual collection program. Residents do not need to separate paper and cardboard from cans, bottles and plastics. All recyclable materials can be combined together in one large container. single stream manual curbside recycling program: The single stream curbside recycling program allows all accepted recycling materials to be placed in the same container; papers will no longer need to be tied or placed in paper bags and must be placed inside the recycling container. The containers have wheels, are stable and can be easily moved. As a comparison, a traditional trash container measures 22 x 22 at the top and has a height of 29 ; the automated trash container measures 24 x 25 at the top (including wheels) and is 43 high. As with the current collection system, larger, bulky items; i.e.: furniture, can not be placed in the container. 5 Town of Wakefield Automated Refuse Collection Program Collection Guidelines Automated Refuse Cart Placement Automated refuse carts must be used or Town designated overflow bag. Place trash carts at the curb no later than 7:00 am. If trash is not out when the truck is at your residence, you will need to hold the material for the following week. Leave adequate space (3 feet) around the trash cart to allow room for the automated collection arm. The handles and wheels must face away from the street. The cart lid must be closed. The cart should be no more than three (3) feet from the curb or road edge and the arrows on the lid must point towards the street. Do not place carts below low hanging wires or tree branches. Do not overfill the trash cart, lids must be closed. Ordinary household rubbish is the only trash that should go into the trash cart. Recycling, hazardous waste, construction debris and yard waste should not be put in the automated container. Our refuse contractor is instructed to not collect automated containers with inappropriate materials. Household trash not placed in automated container or Town overflow bag will not be picked up. Trash carts are assigned to a specific address by serial number. Carts remain the property of the Town of Wakefield. Overflow Bags (for excessive trash weeks) are available for purchase and can be obtained at the Town Hall and various business locations. Residents may apply for a second refuse cart at the Department of Public Works, Town Hall, 1 Lafayette Street. The annual rental fee for a second cart is $150 per year. The fee includes the rental of the cart and the collection and disposal of the additional refuse. Bulky Items (chairs, couches, tables, etc.) will be picked up on Fridays. You must call by noon on Thursday (781) 246-6301, extension 4120 to arrange for bulky item pickup on Friday. There is a limit of two items per week. There is no cost for bulky item pickup. White Goods (refrigerators, stoves, dryers, etc.) will continue to be picked up the last full week of the month. Stickers are required and can be obtained at Town Hall. There is a $20 fee per white good. Checks must be made payable to the Town of Wakefield. TV/CRT Monitors TV/CRT Monitors will be picked up the last full week of the month. Stickers are required and can be obtained at Town Hall. There is a $20 fee per item for CRT/TVs. Checks must be made payable to Russell Disposal, Inc. If you need a Sticker for a TV/CRT and White Goods Sticker at the same time, please bring two checks. Town of Wakefield Department of Public Works Important Your Assistance is Needed Recycling is mandatory in the Town of Wakefield. All residents who receive town trash pickup must recycle. The Town s recycling regulations prohibit the collection of trash with recycling materials and provides for a $50.00 fine per incident. Please help us avoid implementing the regulation. Why is recycling important? For every ton recycled in 2017, the Town saves $64.85 For every 1,000 tons recycled in 2017, the Town saves $64,850 The funds saved can be used to support other Town programs. Styrofoam currently is not recyclable and should be disposed of with your regular trash. Newspapers, magazines and cardboard must be placed inside the recycling container. MERCURY RECOVERY PROGRAM DON T PUT ITEMS CONTAINING MERCURY IN THE TRASH! Mercury is an element that can be harmful to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. Mercury won t harm you or the environment as long as it stays inside the product and is handled properly when you are finished with it. Mercury can be found in a variety of household products like thermometers, thermostats, button-cell batteries and fluorescent lamps. Please handle products containing mercury properly: 1. You can take advantage of the 3 curbside waste collections (one in the Spring and two in the Fall). A permit is required to obtain access to the Nahant Street Yard Waste Site and is available to Wakefield residents only. Permits can be obtained at the DPW Business Office at the Town Hall during regular business hours (Monday through Wednesday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) or online at www.wakefield.ma.us/public-works. Proof of Wakefield residency is required at the time of purchase. Permits must be renewed annually at a cost of $25 per permit. All permits are effective from April to early December of each calendar year on scheduled opening dates.
