Role of a Volunteer Volunteers play an extremely important role in furthering the goals of the Adena Mansion & Gardens Society. They are our ambassadors to visitors and to the community at large. Many visitors will interact exclusively with volunteers on duty. Whatever impression the visitor develops about Adena Mansion & Gardens may be the result of interaction with volunteers. Volunteers have the opportunity to enhance the experience of our visitors. AMGS encourages volunteers to take the initiative in providing excellent visitor service. The first step is being knowledgeable about Adena and the Adena Mansion and Gardens Society, and being able to answer general questions that visitors may ask. Education AMGS depends on its volunteers, wherever they serve. Volunteer positions require varying levels of training and time commitments, depending on the position. In addition to taking part in required training, we encourage volunteers to attend the many public programs and events Adena offers throughout the year, and to become knowledgeable about Adena and early statehood by taking advantage of the many good books and materials that are available.
Mansion Docent Job Description: To welcome visitors to Adena Mansion and provide tours of the site. Adapt these presentations to meet visitors needs, expectations and time restrictions. Be comfortable speaking to people and interacting freely with them Enjoy working with school children Be willing to memorize information and present material with interest Be willing to study about the Worthington family Be organized, dependable, and punctual Be willing to dress in costume Be physically able to move about and stand for periods of time
Tenant House Docent Job Description: To welcome visitors to the Tenant House and provide tours of the house. Explain the daily life of indentured servants and other workers on the farm and how it differed from the life of the Worthington family. Enjoy working with people, especially school children Be willing to give demonstrations of early pioneer life Be willing to study history of this era Be organized, dependable, and punctual Be willing to dress in costume Be physically able to move about the site
Barn Docent Job Description: To welcome visitors to the Barn and provide information about its function on the farm. Explain farm tools and equipment used at the time of Thomas Worthington, along with sharing knowledge of crops and how they were planted and harvested. Tell about the animals of the farm. Enjoy working with people, especially school children Be willing to learn about farm tools and farm animals Be willing to demonstrate some of the tools and their uses Be organized, dependable, and punctual Be willing to dress in costume
Museum Guide Job Description: To welcome visitors to the museum in the Visitors Center and direct them to the displays. Give brief summaries of the divided areas of interest. Be helpful in answering questions about the Adena site. Enjoy working with people, especially school children Be willing to study the displays in order to be familiar with the information Be comfortable speaking to people about history Be organized, dependable, and punctual Be willing to dress in costume
Gardener Job Description: To help maintain Adena Gardens as a beautiful and historically accurate attraction, based on AMGS s garden plan. Garden volunteers are encouraged to work in pairs. They may work in the decorative flower garden, the vegetable garden, or the vineyard. Duties include weeding; planting and transplanting; and pruning. Have interest and experience in gardening Be willing to be trained and to follow instructions Be physically able to bend, kneel, and perform ordinary gardening tasks Be organized, dependable, and punctual
Quilting Job Description: To work with a group of quilters providing early patterns of hand-work for demonstrations in the tenant house and sale in the gift shop. Enjoy hand stitching Have an interest in early quilting patterns Have the ability to work with others Enjoy demonstrating the craft to children and adults
Costumes Job Description: To sew simple patterns for costumes used by interpreters at Adena. Enjoy sewing Have the ability to use a sewing machine Be able to follow simple patterns for items such as an apron or skirt Have an interest in period costumes
Gift Shop Receptionist Job Description: To work at the front desk in the Visitors Center, describing tours/events, answering general questions, selling tickets and merchandise, and directing visitors to the various sites. Enjoy working with people Be organized, dependable, and punctual Enjoy learning about history Be comfortable making cash transactions and using the telephone Be comfortable speaking to people and interacting freely with them
Tax Deductions for Volunteers 1. Any unreimbursed expenses in giving volunteer services. 2. Cost of costumes or uniforms as well as cost for cleaning. Note: The clothing must not be suitable for everyday use and must be worn only while performing donated services. 3. Mileage (14 cents a mile) to and from the volunteer site. Reliable written records of the mileage and dates must be kept. 4. Cost of Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) check if required to do the volunteer work. NOTE: The value of your time and services cannot be deducted.
