Reduce, Reuse Recycle! Liz Morris, Franklin Lakes Recycling Coordinator (201) 891-4000, Ext. 1280, LMorris@franklinlakes.org What s the Problem with Plastic Bags? Cost The clean up of plastic bags costs millions of dollars each year. Much of this comes out of taxes paid by individuals. Short term environmental impact Litter in streets, parks and public spaces. Medium term environmental impact Clogged streams, rivers and other waterways. Long term environmental impact Sea birds and mammals mistake plastic bags for food and eat them which damages their digestive system causing health problems and ultimately death. Drain on resources Over 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. It takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce the number of plastic bags used yearly. Don t forget to use reusable bags! Pride in Franklin Lakes is Picking Up! Anti-Littering Campaign The Franklin Lakes community can work together to clean up our parks, fields and public areas. Clean up after yourself and make sure that others do as well. The beauty that is Franklin Lakes should be free of litter. Be responsible to your community, your neighbors, the environment and yourself, by always picking up. 6
