127 CENTRAL PARK WEST ROOFTOP TERRACE New York City, USA Category Intensive green roof Year 2013 Area 45 m² (460 sq. ft.) Landscape Architecture Gunn Landscape Architecture, PLLC Architecture Foley Fiore Architecture Photography Paul Warchol This Central Park West rooftop terrace is a verdant, textural garden full of layers of fresh green foliage. Set against muted pastel shades of weathered hardwood and natural stone, it offers a natural oasis amongst the concrete of New York City. Spatially, the layout of this intimate garden is simple with a small, soft lawn of Irish moss opening up onto a modest patio flanked by thickly layered planting. In the far corner from the dwelling lies a cozy, soft furnished bench under a hardwood arbor. Immediately adjacent is a specially commissioned water feature lending its calming sounds to the garden. Butt-jointed natural stone paving and ipe hardwood have been left untreated to gently weather over time to mellow into the garden s setting. Along one side of the patio, raised planters full of herbaceous planting create a sense of enclosure, while on the other, English and Boston ivies sprawling over a lattice screen offers privacy from the surrounding city. Korean dogwood and Manchurian lilac provide height to the planting and at the same time offer dappled shade and fragrance in spring.

149 CROSBY STREET ROOFTOP TERRACE New York City, USA Category Roof garden Year 2008 Area 250 m² (2,700 sq. ft.) Landscape Architecture Gunn Landscape Architecture, PLLC Architecture Deborah Berke and Partners Photography Alexander Herring This Crosby Street rooftop terrace provides a tranquil haven above the hustle and bustle of New York s Soho through the artful blending of Eastern-influenced aesthetics and sharp contemporary lines. The roof garden contains everything you could wish for in a contemporary garden, including a kitchen, entertaining area, and even a spa. These separate areas are unified through the use of one single material palette for the whole garden. Natural materials such as ipe wood, Yangtzee limestone, and smooth beach pebbles contrast with the man-made materials of the surrounding city to create a sense of calmness and serenity. A lawn of artificial grass provides soft relief to the limestone paving and is virtually maintenance free and also eliminates the need for irrigation on the roof. The planting of Himalayan birch, Japanese maple, and Bisset s bamboo all provide architectural structure, while having light foliage to create gentle movement and dappled shade. The inclusion of an evergreen juniper hedge on one side of the site provides privacy from neighboring properties.

151 Opposite: The choice of high-end materials and attention to detail at the design and implementation stages affords this garden a luxurious atmosphere. Below: Soft cushions blur the lines between interior and exterior.

153

155 Left: Secluded seating nestled between the junipers and bamboo offers privacy and a chance to escape. Below: Repeating rhythmic patterns of limestone paving, hardwood decking, and plant containers draw the eye down to the lawn area beyond.
