What is the plan for the next 30 minutes? Definitions, examples, learning Some fun along the way Hopefully Resources Questions & answers

What is Tactical urbanism Pop-up <something> Placemaking Power of 10

What is Tactical urbanism Low cost, temporary changes intended to improve spaces (Wikipedia) Often IS illegal check regulations May appear cool, but is often done with a purpose

What is Pop-up <something> Creating something unexpected & temporary in a space May be temporary, may be trying to spark a longer-term solution

http://wuwm.com/post/art-installations-along-fond-du-lac-avenue-highlight-overlookedcorridor#stream/0

ROI of pop-ups Our 1 st year doing PARKing day cost $100 excluding staff time It generated over $1,000,000 in investment initially Our 2 nd year doing PARKing day cost $200 excluding staff time By building on the prior year s momentum, we gained at least $3,000,000 more in investment

http://clndkn.com/post/54111317357/double-arrows-for-insite-temporary-public-art

ROI of pop-ups Milwaukee did temporary art in a challenged area for 3 years in a row One year included stormwater art in an area with flooding problems Two years later, a large green infrastructure project began to store over 40 million gallons of stormwater The Obama administration even helped

ROI of pop-ups SMTX in San Marcos, Texas had a great ROI June 2014 - the City of San Marcos and Dover, Kohl & Partners converted two blocks of street from one-way to two-way traffic using temporary paint They created a farmer s market, several pop-up parks in parking areas, lanes were narrowed, and a two-way temporary cycle track was installed More than 3,000 residents and visitors visited the site, experiencing the value of safer streets, local food, public spaces, and worry-free bicycling all for a mere $1,300, or less than 50 cents a person. It s a great way to test out ideas before investing

What is Placemaking Holistic strategies used to enliven a space My favorite explanation is an illustration from the Project for Public Spaces

Close your eyes & think of your favorite urban space

What is Power of 10 10 reasons to be in a space: windows, trees, music, art, sitting areas, activities, parking, PEOPLE More reasons = more success (Project for Public Spaces)

Integration You can integrate tactical urbanism, pop-ups, placemaking, and the power of 10 The more you do, usually the better the space becomes Is it ever possible for too much to be going on in a space?

When to use pop-ups Dead spot downtown Revitalize an area Revitalize vacant lot Slow down traffic on a street Longer term tactical urbanism co-op microstores (like NYC, MKE) Safety make streets safer, bike lanes, narrow streets, slow down cars Crime art gets people to look at a space [CPTED] BTW, trompe l oeil can be CPTED Proof of concept

But wait, there s more! Leverage pop-ups with social media, hashtags, engaging the cool kids who have a really large social media following, plus the usual media Remember your audience needs to see your message 3 times before they ll take action

Get help! Engage people to help you never do this alone You can make it look easy, but great events need a boatload of coordination Even CALED uses engage
