In response to this we offer both a standard range of units, along with custom engineered units to suit site specific requirements. Our bespoke solutions allow Air Handling Units to be designed and manufactured in different aspect ratios, as well as in modular form for on site assembly where required. This modular construction method reduces client side rigging costs, whilst offering a practical solution for sites with limited/restricted access. By embracing the latest technologies and promoting a culture of research and development, our Air Handling Units construction materials and fastening methods have been optimised to ensure reliable operation and trouble free maintenance. We are able to design and manufacture units of all sizes and capacities in various construction materials, to suit the market s requirements. Our standard models range from 1m 3 /s to 40m 3 /s. Our Air Handling Units, which form an integral part of a Central Air Conditioning plant, comprise of various components and solutions to assist the designer in achieving the desired conditioned environment. These components are selected based on their ability to contribute to sustainability, energy efficiency and improved indoor air quality (IAQ). The conditioned air would generally be supplied to the conditioned area via a network of ducting. Casing: The panel finish is determined by the client with various options such as: Powder coated steel, AluZinc, Chromadek or Stainless Steel, while the insulation is based on acoustic attenuation, thermal characteristics, and production costs. Options include flexible, elastomeric thermal insulation, polyurethane, fire retardant polystyrene, mineral wool or calcium silicate. Our smaller units are constructed with either insulated sandwich type panels using an aluminium profile frame system, or with powder coated panels. Our larger units are constructed with tongue and groove type sandwich panels and are trimmed with aluminium angles. Unit base: The stability and strength of the unit is predominantly determined by the base frame. The type of base used is determined based on the size of the unit and the installation environment. Employing the latest FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulation software, we are able to design and engineer the correct base type, which allows the unit to be rigged into position safely. Smaller unit bases are constructed using galvanised or stainless steel sheet metal profiles, whilst the larger units are welded, heavy duty structural steel sections (painted or hot dip galvanised). Major Components Fans and motors: The fans are static and dynamically balanced, and are single or double inlet, forward or backward curved centrifugal plug or axial type units. These fans can either be belt driven or direct driven, with belt guards fitted in order to provide safety from all moving parts. The motors on the belt driven fans are of a squirrel cage TEFC type and can be speed controlled using either an external variable speed drive, or by varying the belts and/or pulleys. The latest innovative EC Plug Fans have an electrically commutated control facility that allows for a varied fan speed. Filters: The type of filter used is determined by the environment, climate and required application. Generally, the filters used within our Air Handling Units are: Panel Washable Filters, Bag Filters, Compact Cassette Filters, Carbon Filters, Electrostatic Filters and HEPA Filters. Dampers: Dampers are used to control the amount of air passing in and out through an opening and are generally located within the mixing plenum of the Air Handling Unit. The dampers can either be motor-driven or of manual actuation, and can control Outside Air, Return Air, Exhaust Air, etc. The outside air dampers can be controlled automatically via a CO 2 sensor and are supplied in extruded aluminium, galvanised or stainless steel sections with or without seals. Sound Attenuators: Noise pollution is a major concern facing society and the need for Sound Attenuation is becoming increasingly high. Major factors that must be considered are: sound insulation, sound absorption, vibration damping, and vibration isolation. In light of this, maintaining acceptable acoustics in a space is an important component of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEC). The application and environment in which the AHU is installed will determine the acceptable noise levels. Sound levels can be reduced by selecting the appropriate fans and minimising vibration and drive noises. Noise levels can be further reduced by applying a sound absorbing material inside the walls of the discharge plenum section. Copyright HC Heat-Exchangers (PTY) Ltd. 8

Major Components Cooling, Heating and Steam Coils: Coils are manufactured based on the application and climate, and therefore a choice of copper fins, coated fins, stainless steel fins, aluminium fins and aluminium magnesium (AlMg) is available. The tubing and frame material can also vary. The coils are generally copper tubes mechanically bonded to aluminium fins, with copper headers, all contained within a galvanised, Aluminium or stainless steel frame. These coils are selected using the latest HC Heat-Exchangers computer selection software to achieve the desired thermal efficiency with minimum air and fluid pressure drops. The software caters for various fluid types, and bypass factors are also taken into account in order to ensure optimal efficiency. All coils are provided with drain connections and air vents. The tube wall thickness and the test pressure are based on the fluid passed through the coil. The cooling coil assembly is fitted on a stainless steel drain pan, for condensate removal. Image courtesy of Condair plc. De-Humidifiers: There are various types of De-Humidifiers used within the Air Handling Units. The most popular use the refrigeration cycle in a cooling or heatpump desiccant type, where air passes through a rotor containing a water absorbent desiccant material. Humidifiers: Humidifiers are used to condition the space by adding moisture to maintain comfort and protect the contents of the space. The type of humidifier used depends on the psychrometric process and economic factors. Steam humidification is an isothermal process, therefore, it does not change the air temperature. The preferred steam humidifier is either steam generated in a large central boiler and distributed into the Air Handling Units via a network of steam piping with its associated pressure reducing stations, or a portable boiler for each Air Handling Unit with dispersion tubes and nozzles. The alternative is the adiabatic process, where the air is cooled whilst moisture is added into the airstream; this is achieved by either High Pressure Atomizing, Air/Water Atomising or Wetted Cellulose Fibre. Major Components Heat Recovery Wheels / Air to Air Heat Exchangers: These recovery methods utilise a transfer of energy and are used extensively within the industry to achieve energy savings, by removing both sensible and/or latent heat. The wheel or Plate heat-exchanger is positioned within an Air Handling Unit and is divided into two sections, where the stale exhaust air is drawn through one half and the outside air through the other in a counter flow arrangement. The benefit of this system is that the energy is conserved from the stale exhaust air and fresh incoming air is added into the outside air.
