Message from the Chair The International Social Science Council (ISSC) is holding its fourth World Social Science Forum (WSSF) in Fukuoka, Japan, from 25 to 28 September 2018. It is the very first to be convened in Asia. This event will be co-organized and hosted by Kyushu University with support from Science Council of Japan,Japan Science and Technology Agency, and a consortium of academic and research institutions. The WSSF is the largest global multidisciplinary gathering of social scientists in the world. The theme of the 2018 WSSF is Security and Equality for Sustainable Futures. In recent years, global crises have compelled people throughout the world to reconsider the sustainability of human societies. Security and Equality are prerequisites for stability and sustainability. The theme speaks directly to the vital role the social sciences and other sciences play in clarifying and developing principles, norms, rules and institutions to undertake actions ensuring safe and secured lives, inclusive societies and sustainable futures. The theme covers a broad range of topics that call for interdisciplinary and open analyses and debates. The 2018 WSSF will bring together the entire range of social science disciplines, from all regions of the world and, based on the experience of the previous Forums, we expect at least 1,000 participants to attend. We have planned an inclusive-policy travel grant program to offer to early career social scientists who present their research at the Forum coming from economically disadvantaged countries. Please kindly find attached the opportunities to sponsor the forum, have an advertisement in the program and have an exhibition booth. We cordially welcome your participation at this exciting event and look forward to hearing from you. Please contact us if you need any additional information or visit the Forum website for more information: www.wssf2018.org. In closing, please accept our best wishes for your company s continued prosperity. We would appreciate your kindest attention in advance. With best wishes and highest regards, Kazuo Miyamoto Chair of the WSSF Local Organizing Committee Vice president, Kyushu University 1
