SAFETY GUIDELINES Read all steps, guides, and rules carefully before installing and using the Kinetico 2060f OD Sulfur Guard. Check your local building and sanitation codes for installation compliance. THE INSTALLATION MUST MEET ALL STATE AND LOCAL PLUMBING CODES including but not limited to: Distances that equipment should be placed from the main panel box and electrical outlets. Air gaps that must be provided for all drain lines. Kinetico recommends that a WQA certified installer perform the installation. Failure to install the system as instructed will void the warranty. Do not use on water pressure that exceeds 125 psi or water temperature that exceeds 120 F. Do not install the Kinetico 2060f OD Sulfur Guard in an area where the temperature can cause the unit to freeze. Damage to the system will result. Provide proper ventilation when using PVC cleaner or glue. Use a ladder for all overhead work that is beyond your natural reach. If working continuously at a height of six feet or more, employ appropriate safety devices. Use an appliance dolly when transporting equipment on stairways. When soldering, the following must be met and followed: Use only LEAD FREE solder. Close or remove PVC containers and other flammable materials to prevent fire or explosions. Do not wear loose clothing (ie: shirt tails, sleeves, etc.) when using a torch for soldering. Notify the customer if you will be disabling smoke alarm(s) during installation. Be sure to reconnect the smoke alarm(s). Use a scorch pad to protect any surface that may be exposed to a torch flame or excessive heat. Wear protective eyewear while installing to prevent eye injury caused by splattering soldering materials or metal/plastic shavings. Do not solder brass adapters while they are inserted in the Kinetico control valve. Damage to the plastic and rubber parts may occur due to the heat and may result in water damage. The material used in the soldering process may attack certain types of plastics. Care should be taken during the installation process to assure that solder and flux do not come into contact with media tanks, the control module, E-clips and related plastic components. When installation is complete, sanitize plumbing lines with common unscented household bleach (5-1/4% sodium hypochlorite). The amount of bleach will vary depending on plumbing size, lengths and fixtures. INSTALL KINETICO 2060f OD SULFUR GUARD ONLY ON SOFT, IRON FREE WATER. 1
SYSTEM INSTALLATION Installation Procedure 1. Determine the proper location for the installation. Test the raw water to confirm that the system to be installed is properly sized. Ensure that the system will be installed on a flat surface. 2. Install using one of the two by-pass valving methods shown in Figure 1. Note the inlet and outlet arrows on the valve head. All Kinetico equipment must be protected from negative pressure (vacuum). This can be accomplished by using an inlet check valve or an air gap on the drain line. Other means available are vacuum breakers and backflow preventers. Check your local codes. NOTE: When installing equipment within six feet of a hot water heater, KInetico recommends installing a backflow preventer as close to the hot water heater as possible. If a hot water expansion tank is installed before the hot water heater, install the backflow preventer before the hot water expansion tank. NOTE: The Kinetico By-pass valve is directional. The inlets ports are either A or B (these letters are molded into the valve body). The corresponding outlet port is C. 3. Applying Different Style/Size Adapters a. On ¾-inch copper applications, brass in/out adapters (part no. 10748) can be used, and the pipe will plumb directly into the ID of the adapter. b. On 1-inch applications, brass in/out adapters (part no. 11049) can be used, and the pipe will plumb directly into the ID of the adapter.. c. On PVC applications, PVC in/out adapters (part no. 11615A) can be used. 1¼ PVC pipe will glue into the adapter. d. When using threaded brass adapters (part no. 10749), 1 male adapters will thread into the adapter. e. If using a Kinetico By-pass valve, the elbow kit (part no. 11349) can be used. WARNING: When soldering, close or remove PVC containers and other flammable materials to prevent fire or explosions. Provide proper ventilation when using PVC cleaner or glue 4. The final soldering connection can now be made. NOTE When soldering these final connections, wrap PIPES and BRASS ADAPTERS with wet towels to prevent excessive heat transfer to the module. If gluing the final connections, clean pipes and fittings away from the module head and tanks. Insert adapters into the head. Cover tanks and exposed portions of the head. 5. After all the plumbing is completed, but before connecting adapters to equipment, flush both inlet and outlet lines by opening the by-pass valve and allowing water to rinse any debris from the lines. 2
6. Locate the enclosed kit containing the following items: four O-rings, two connector pipes with O-rings, two connector pins, two connector links and a silicone packet. Apply a liberal amount of silicone to all O-rings and place two O-rings on each adapter. Treated Water to Use 4 3 5 6 2 Raw Water 1 1. Main shut-off Valve 2. Outside Faucet Valve (open) 3. Secure retaining bracket to the module with clevis pin and hairpin. See Figure 2. Slide the remote tank up to the main tank. Position the main and remote tanks so they are parallel and the bottom tank feet are about ½ apart. Connector pipes can now be inserted into the appropriate ports. Place connector link on top of the holes where the connector pins are to be inserted as well as the corresponding link to the bottom side. Insert connector pins through the links and the pin holes and through the bottom link. Be sure that the locking ball is through the bottom link. NOTE: An air gap must be provided for all drain lines. Check and meet local and state plumbing codes. 8. Locate the ½ FNPT x ½ T drain elbow in the owners pack. Apply 2 to 3 wraps of Teflon tape to the ½ drain nipple on level three of the valve module. Hand tighten the drain elbow onto the ½ drain nipple. Remove the nut from the drain elbow, slide the nut and the split gripper (with the larger side toward 3
the nut) onto the drain line. The end of the drain line should extend about 1/2 inch past the hat sleeve. Slide the tubing into the elbow and hand tighten the nut. 9. If you are not able to run the drain line overhead, a PVC drain line must be installed using ¾ or 1-inch pipe. The pipe size will be determined by the distance to the drain, the backwash flow rate and, the number of 90-degree elbows used in this drain line. The stand pipe for the drain line should be a minimum of 18 inches in height, and the stand pipe for the overflow line from the brine tank should be approximately 14 inches in height. The PVC piping system should be bracketed to the wall for support and to provide a 1½-inch air gap at the discharge point into the floor drain or the sump pump crock. If discharging into a DWV line, check your State and Local Codes for the proper procedures. 10. Important - The overflow line from the 4 x 37 regenerant tank or the 12 x 40 regenerant drum must be connected and run to a drain lower than the overflow fitting. Kinetico does not recommend running flexible tubing across floors or along walls as it may be kicked out at discharge point or pinched. Main Tank Main Tank Figure 2 Remote Tank 11. It is extremely important to use the correct meter disc. The water must first be tested, at the site for sulfide (H 2 S) and dissolved oxygen. Refer to the Disc Selection Chart in the Technical Manual, or on page ten of these installation instructions for the proper meter disc. a. Remove eight screws from the clear cap and lift the cap from Level one. b. Pull back the meter drive pawl and lift out the meter disc. c. To insert the new meter disc, hold back the meter drive pawl (meter disc segment must be aligned over the regeneration start pawl), and align the regeneration start pawl with the segment of the 4
meter disc. The clear cap must be reinstalled in the same position (make sure leg at the 5 o clock position is over the Level one screen). d. The cap screws should be turned counterclockwise until a click is felt to prevent stripping in the Level one. Tighten the eight screws in an alternating fashion. 12. Position the 4 x 37 regenerant tank as shown in FIGURE 3 and FIGURE 4. If 12 x 40 regenerant drum is used position as shown in FIGURE 5. 13. Apply 2 to 3 wraps of Teflon tape to the 3/8 regenerant nipple on the level 3 of the valve module. Locate the 1/4 FNPT x 3/8 T regenerant elbow and two 3/8 tubing inserts in the owners pack. Hand tighten the regenerant elbow onto the nipple. Remove the nut from the elbow, slide the nut and the split gripper (with the larger side toward the nut) onto the tubing. The end of the regenerant line should extend about 1/4 inch past the hat sleeve. Push one 3/8 insert into the end of the tubing. Slide the tubing into the elbow and tighten the nut. 14. Remove the top of the regenerant tank or drum and insert the 3/8 tubing through the grommet as shown in Figure 4 or Figure 5. Carefully remove the draw tube assembly from the shipping tube and remove all packing materials. 15. Remove the nut from the adapter fitting on the draw tube assembly, slide the nut and the split gripper (with the larger side toward the nut) onto the tubing. The end of the regenerant line should extend about 1/4 inch past the hat sleeve. Push one 3/8 insert into the end of the tubing. Slide the tubing into the fitting and tighten the nut. 16. Remove the overflow drain elbow from the inside the regenerant cylinder. Wrap the threads of the elbow with teflon tape. Install the overflow elbow. IMPORTANT: Connect 5/8" OD tubing to the overflow elbow and run to a suitable drain. NOTE: If there is not a suitable drain, an overflow safety must be installed on the unit. The part number for the Kinetico 2060f OD Sulfur Guard overflow safety kit is #10168 17. Position the draw tube assembly into the regenerant tank or drum as in Figure 3 or Figure 5 and replace top. 18. Start up of the Kinetico 2060f OD Sulfur Guard with a Kinetico By-pass Valve Turn the Kinetico By-pass Valve handle until the indicator is between the service and by-pass positions and allow tanks to fill slowly with water. Water will run at the drain until the unit is fully pressurized. With unit in service and under pressure, use a Phillips screwdriver (a #2 is best) to depress the actuator in the center of the cap on the valve. Push down and turn clockwise, advancing the control disc actuator to the backwash position. At this time, turn the by-pass valve handle until the indicator is at the service position. Manually backwash the main and remote tanks until all of the air is purged from the system. Continue to backwash each tank for a minimum of five minutes or until drain water flow clears. Let the unit shut off automatically. Check for water flow to the drain. Open a house faucet downstream from the system until any remaining air is purged from the lines.
