This mid 15 th century forest design was discovered in a house in Halifax in 1901. Unfortunately the house fell into ruin shortly afterwards and the painting was lost forever. The scene depicts a forest floor richly studded with clusters of small flowers. In amongst the trees are creatures modelled on those found in the popular medieval bestiaries. This style of wall painting, reminiscent of tapestries, was found all over Britain. The design is now available printed on luxurious velvet (shown on sofa) and on linen.
Melissa White is a mural artist specialising in Elizabethan painted decoration. Our Elizabethan ancestors employed local craftsmen to brightly decorate their homes with beautiful hand painted designs. Most of these paintings have been lost over the years but fortunately some survive today, often discovered during renovations or behind panelling in vernacular buildings. Melissa and her creative partner, David Cutmore, an expert in Elizabethan wallpainting, have reproduced these stunning designs for many private clients as well as for public buildings such as Shakespeare s Birthplace and several museums across the UK. From their workshop in Hastings on the Sussex coast they make and distress fresco secco paintings and paint luxurious linen cloths on large stretcher frames, recreating the magnificent patterns of the Tudor age. The resulting collection is a rich mix of pattern, texture, prints and embroideries that will bring a small piece of English history to your home. Whether you live in a period house or a modern apartment these designs offer either striking drama or subtle effects. For the first time, Zoffany have digitally printed three of the fabric designs and one of the wallpapers 137cm wide to show the full effect of the original s scale and richness of colour.

The house in Canterbury where this Elizabethan multivine was discovered was demolished long ago but the painted wall was rescued and, following restoration, put on view in the Museum of Canterbury in 2010. This type of design, seen in many variations, was probably the most fashionable style of the Elizabethan era. This extremely rare wall painting can still be seen in The Merchant s House in Marlborough built in the mid-17 th century by Thomas Bayly, a silk merchant. The design appears in the dining room and probably represents a striped silk. Printed on wide width wallpaper it looks stunning hung vertically or horizontally (shown this page and far right). 1 2 3 4 5 1. The dining room in The Merchant s House in Marlborough, Wiltshire, provided the inspiration for the design Merchant House Stripe. It was painted with vertical stripes in bands 14 wide over a dark green background spaced equally around the room from floor to ceiling and covering even the doors. The design, dating from 1665 was hidden for centuries and re-discovered in 1991 is believed to be unique in this country. It was probably inspired by silk wall-hangings imported by Thomas Bayly from the Netherlands. 2. This design is based on a late 17th century painted cloth. At the peak of their popularity these stayned linen cloths were nailed on walls, floor to ceiling around entire rooms. Very few survive due to their fragile nature. The subject matter included religious themes, hunting scenes or pictorial scenes such as this lush pastoral landscape. Mille Fleurs, meaning a thousand flowers, is one of the most beautiful examples of wall painting in Melissa & David s archive. It appears to represent silk hangings with gold thread. You can see a replica of this design painted by Melissa and David in Shakespeare s Birthplace Museum in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is now printed on wide width wallpaper and is also available as a beautiful embroidered fabric (shown below). Melissa White This Renaissance design is taken from a rare block printed fabric and very little is known of its origin. It has been printed to imitate the worn effect of the original.
As individuals prospered, they could afford to install oak panelling in their homes. In the 16 th century it was fashionable to paint over the oak and apply designs such as this gilded filigree motif. Filigree is printed by rotary screen with a badger brush which creates a random stripe (shown below). Cinquefoils is a design steeped in ancient history. The Cinquefoils motif, a derivation of the classical acanthus leaf, has taken many forms over the years. This linen print captures the transparency of Melissa s painted canvas perfectly. A small sprig motif from the design has been used in the co-ordinating wallpaper, Sussex Sprig (both shown opposite).
