The Village of Island Lake, in conjunction with Waste Management, provides a comprehensive solid waste program and encourages residents to reduce, reuse and recycle and ensure that waste is disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner. The Village of Island Lake contracts with Waste Management to provide solid waste, recycling and yard waste collection services to residential households. Weekly curbside service is provided to single-family homes, duplexes and multi-family properties (i.e., condominiums and townhomes). During the week of April 19th (Earth Week), you will be receiving a 64 gallon cart on wheels for your recyclables. This is part of an effort to increase recycling in Island Lake. Waste Management has integrated the latest sorting technologies in many of our facilities, enabling us to provide single-stream recycling, NEW Recycling Program! which allows customers to mix recyclable paper, plastic and glass in one cart. Please see pages 6-7 for Lake County s Curbside Recycling Guidelines to find out details about what you can recycle. Additional 64-gallon recycle carts are available for an added monthly charge. For more details, please contact Waste Management s Customer Service at 800-796-9696 between 7:00 am and 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday. The Village of Island Lake offers a senior discount for those who are at least 65 years of age and occupy the premises. For more details, please contact the Village of Island Lake, 3270 Greenleaf Ave., Island Lake, IL 60042, 847-526-8764. Fax 847-526-1534 www.villageofislandlake.com. Disposing of Latex Paint Latex paint is not a hazardous material - it simply needs to be dried out before disposal with other garbage. Latex paint is not accepted at HCW collection events. Instead, materials such as shredded newspaper and cat litter can be used to absorb moisture. After the latex paint is dry, you may place can with the lid off in the regular trash (not recycling). For a fee, Earth Paints Collection Systems can process latex into new paint or made into an additive for other products. Consider recycling your latex paint with Earth Paints Collection Systems. For a small fee, Earth Paints will recycle the paint and process it into new products. They recycle the cans too. For more information, fees, and to find the nearest drop-off locations in Lake County, contact them at (847) 231-6044 or visit their web site www.earthpaintscs.com. PLEASE RETAIN THIS BROCHURE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE Village of Island Lake Pick-up Schedule Monday: Solid Waste and Recycling General Guidelines Tuesday: Yard Waste All solid waste materials must be placed at the curb for collection by 6:00 a.m. the day of your scheduled collection, but not before 6:00 p.m. the day before your pick-up. Please keep in mind that one truck picks up trash and recyclables (one-pass truck), and other trucks pick up yard waste and bulk items. We cannot guarantee a specific time the driver will be at your home. Garbage and recycling should be separated by the drive and at least 5 feet from stationary objects (mailboxes, basketball hoops, vehicles, etc.). All containers that are not collected must be removed from the curb by the completion of that day. Scheduled collections that fall on or after an observed holiday will be delayed by one day the week of the holiday only, with Friday s collection taking place on Saturday. Disposing of Household Chemical Wastes Household Chemical Waste (HCW) and household hazardous waste are terms used to describe common products used in a variety of cleaning, painting, pest control and yard work activities. Careless storage and disposal of household chemicals can pose serious environmental and human health threats. The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, IL (SWALCO) offers free HCW collections for residents and has recently expanded its HCW program to include public drop-off days at the Gurnee facility. SWALCO will accept public drop-off of household chemical waste at the Gurnee facility only on the dates and times specified and only if an appointment is made. Schedule your online appointment at http://www.co.lake.il.us/swalco/events/schedule.asp or by calling 847-336-9340. For other locations and dates, please call SWALCO at 847-336-9340 or check their website (www.swalco.org). The following materials are typical household chemical wastes that are accepted at the HCW events. Observed Holidays: New Year s Day Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day Curbside Collection Services To produce each week s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. Recycling 1 ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space. The energy saved from recycling 1 glass bottle can run one 100-watt light bulb for four hours and causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than making a new bottle from raw materials. A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days. There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum-can can be recycled. A single quart of motor oil, if disposed improperly, can contaminate up to 2,000,000 gallons of fresh water. In 2009, the average Island Lake home set out 534 pounds of materials for recycling, giving the Village a 23% recycling rate. The Village of Island Lake in partnership with Wauconda Township and the Village of Wauconda host year round Residential Electronics Collections. In 2009 the communities diverted over 200,000 pounds of electronics from landfill.
