PH150036 CELEBRATING THE IMPERFECT AND UNIQUE When you think about mass-produced furniture it s easy to imagine big machines spitting out glossy new products, each one identical to the one before. The collection is our way of turning massproduced uniformity on its head, by producing products with a beautifully imperfect, human quality without raising the price tag. This ambition had us completely rethink how we can make furniture. tea towel, 2 pack. 5.50 In partnership with designer Piet Hein Eek, we ve developed new ways to work with wood, glass, ceramics and textiles. Always with the sustainable thinking that Piet has in common with the IKEA approach. tea towel 5.50/2 pack. 504.022.12 Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 3
glass 0.90 GLASS HALF FULL During development on the factory floor, Piet first became aware of the complexity involved in the largescale production of pressed glass. After several false starts, there were even suggestions to forget this material altogether, although Piet was persistent. I was of the opinion that this product fitted perfectly within the theme of handmade mass-production, he says. glass 0.90 The final design is essentailly a hand-drawn sketch converted into a digital drawing for production. The team decided to make glasses on two different machines, which creates an interesting little mismatch when you combine them. PH150043 MASS-PRODUCED VS HANDCRAFTED Mass-produced furniture and handcrafted furniture each have their benefits. Large-scale production increases efficiency, so that high quality can have a reasonable cost. In contrast, handcrafted furniture can be as individual as the person that makes it. IKEA designers often discuss the idea of handcrafted furniture that s available and accessible to the largest number of people. By happy coincidence, Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has had many of the same thoughts. glass 0.90/each plate 5/each Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 glass 0.90/each 704.022.11 plate 5/each White 903.870.78 Pink 103.870.96 Grey 303.870.95 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 5
PH150033 PH150040 AN EXCITING COLLABORATION When I graduated from design school there was a great drive for perfection in design, Piet says. If you made a thousand copies they had to be identical, and there was nothing in the design that hadn t been put in there by the designer. I wanted to strip that idea away and let the material take the lead. Piet is famous for using salvaged material to create beautiful furniture that is found in hotels and galleries around the world. This desire to always find the value in reources that might otherwise go to waste is the very foundation of the IKEA approach from the beginning. shelving unit is the perfect example of trying to throw away as little as possible. Only the wood removed by saw cuts and by creating holes is taken away or burned, Piet explains. While presenting a collection at the Milan Furniture Fair, he bumped into IKEA creative leader Karin Gustavsson and they realised that they were on the same wavelength. The idea of collaboration began to grow. It turned out that IKEA and I had thought about the same thing for ages, Piet says. To make objects feel more human and more personal while still having an industrial production process. shelving unit 90 shelving unit 90 Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 003.945.49 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 6
PH1500041 THE CHALLENGE BEGINS After a meeting in Älmhult, the Swedish town where IKEA products are designed, Karin and Piet decided should span from wooden furniture to glass, ceramics and textiles. The biggest challenge was how to keep the imperfections that give craft objects their individuality, Piet says. It was very difficult to persuade people in the factories to suddenly embrace what they usually perceive as mistakes. Each type of product meant finding a new approach to making it. For the ceramic vases in the collection, handcrafted molds were designed so that there would be different shapes to choose from. For table and glassware, symmetrical designs were tweaked to create subtle variations. Textiles received similar treatment, skipping straight-line embroidery for handdrawn like designs that pushed the capabilities of the machines making them. vase 18 vase 18 103.870.77 Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 7
YEARNING FOR THE UNIQUE One of the biggest challenges came with creating a chair from pine. PH150038 We made it a point to use as much of each tree as we could, keeping what you could call imperfections like knots and changes in the grain and colour, Karin says. Our supplier has something like a thousand workers who usually shape white unblemished pine furniture so we were asking them to work in a completely different way. Already produced to strict standards, all IKEA wood will come by 2020 from more sustainable sources. In the production of chair as well as table and bench this natural, beautiful material is treated with even more care and respect. The simple, minimal elegance of shelving unit is also evidence that less is sometimes more. Ultimately, this collection is designed to bring a warm, human feel to your home. chair 80 I think is beautiful because you can feel a personality behind the products, Karin says. They re made to mix in with what you have and last for a long time, so hopefully they become part of your personality too. All of our wood is sourced according to very strict standards, and by 2020 all our wood will come from more sustainable sources och vill man utveckla kan man lägga till att We define more sustainable sources as either recycled wood, or FSC certified. chair 80 Pine 003.945.06 Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 8

PH150035 tea towel, 2 pack. 5.50 DRAWN BY HAND, WOVEN BY MACHINE In Piet s opinion, the tea towels are the clearest example of the hand-made, mass-produced theme of collection. He hand-drew the patterns, so that they would be less than perfectly geometrical. When sewn by machine the design team hoped the effect would be that of a handmade textile. When the samples of the stripes and checks arrived, we saw just what a good idea it had been to persevere, Piet says. The checks give the impression that someone with an inferior handloom has really done their best to weave a lovely design. The pattern looks very handmade but is actually produced in large quantities on a superior weaving machine. tea towel 5.50/2 pack. 504.022.12 Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 11

THE LAUNCH AT DUTCH DESIGN WEEK Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 20
EXHIBITION POSTERS FROM DUTCH DESIGN WEEK The design for the chair is very unique and characteristic, a kind of all-or-nothingdesign. If it is embraced it could even become an classic or, and the chance is small, it will be a complete disaster. /Piet Hein Eek bench 190 pine chair pine In stores: April 2018 Article number: 10394539 Materials: Basematerial/ Seat and back frame: Solid pine, Clear acrylic lacquer Feet: Steel, Polyethylene plastic Article number: 00394506 Materials: Basematerial/ Seat and back frame: Solid pine, Clear acrylic lacquer Feet: Steel, Polyethylene plastic In stores: April 2018 Using jacquard weaving looms it is possible to weave extremely complicated patterns. I decided that I could devise two patterns, within the context of hand made mass produced, one with stripes and the other with blocks checks and stripes. If you do this by hand, you can be sure it will not end up straight. The checks were even a little clumsy. It took hours just to draw the design as neatly as possible and yet the result was deplorable, if the goal had been to produce a perfectly geometric pattern. But when the goal is to create something handmade, as with this collection, the result was beautiful. /Piet Hein Eek I had devised a series of lamps, inspired by the classic cast iron and steel wire factory lamps we all know. Now they were to be made completely of bamboo, as if they were traditional Vietnamese work lamps that almost perfectly match the bamboo scaffolding that can be seen everywhere around and under construction sites. These gigantic bamboo scaffolds could even be seen around enormous, modern concrete buildings-to-be. In Asia, a scaffolding pipe is made of bamboo. It seemed quite logical to make lamps according to the drawings because their industrial character demands that they are made round and very neatly. After some instruction and when the moulds had been made, the prototype- makers produced almost perfect results. These items were in stark contrast to the shapeless lamp made of seagrass. It is not easy to shape seagrass into a sleek shape so I thought: let s make it amorphous. The resulting lamp was very characteristic, but a little too extreme. /Piet Hein Eek I wanted the wood to be roughly sawn, just like the first raw planks to come out of the sawmill. It was possible to make the chairs in this way but the large planks for the table-tops had to be glued and the knots removed due to the finger-joints. We discussed the maximum size of the planks that could be glued and how rough the wood could be in order to produce the best possible result. Everything they had been trying their best to achieve for the past fifty years was now being questioned. Instead of smooth and perfect it now had to be rough and imperfect. /Piet Hein Eek table 200x80 pine Article number: 80394526 Materials: Basematerial/ Table top: Solid pine, Solid pine, Clear acrylic lacquer Feet: Polyethylene plastic, Steel In stores: April 2018 tea towel 60x60 2 pack Article number: 50402212 Materials: 100% linen In stores: April 2018 pend lmp 24x24 pend lmp 40x30 pend lmp 24x24 Article number: 30396354 Article number: 80396200 Article number: 40396358 Materials: Materials: Materials: Ceiling cup: Polypropylene plastic Ceiling cup: Polypropylene plastic Ceiling cup: Polypropylene plastic Shade: Bamboo, Clear lacquer Shade: Bamboo, Clear lacquer Shade: Bamboo, Clear lacquer Clamp: Steel, Powder coating Clamp: Steel, Powder coating Clamp: Steel, Powder coating In stores: April 2018 In stores: April 2018 In stores: April 2018 I saw a pipe-bending machine in the factory, which presented new opportunities. I thought that they could perhaps use this to make the impossible stackable chair, originally intended for the Jassa collection, with a steel frame. /Piet Hein Eek armchair natural/grey Article number: 00392649 Materials: Frame: Steel, Epoxy/polyester powder coating Weaving: Paper, Clear acrylic lacquer Foot: ABS plastic In stores: April 2018 The theme do not throw away was almost one hundred per cent represented on the shelves cabinet. Furthermore, we kept in mind that the collection should show respect for materials and traditional crafts. /Piet Hein Eek vase 32 terracotta Article number: 10387077 Materials: Red clay, Glaze In stores: April 2018 Handmade mass production was the starting point for the terracotta vases I wanted to make. Once again, we would make moulds of these handmade vases. Because they are round and always turned, it is difficult to see how many different models there are. Ceramic is always made from a mother form. This is used to make a mother mould which is then in turn used to make production moulds. So, as long as the quantities are large enough, you can just as easily work with several different mother moulds and the rest remains the same. /Piet Hein Eek vase 32 terracotta Article number: 10387077 Materials: Red clay, Glaze In stores: April 2018 limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 21
