YOUR ITINERARY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10: GDANSK, POLAND Arrive in Gdańsk and transfer to our hotel for check-in. The Tricity, composed of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, which we ll explore in the coming days, is one of the country s biggest industrial, academic, and cultural centers. The largest of the three cities is Gdańsk. In the afternoon visit the Old Town with its historic buildings and take in the atmosphere of this port city, a former member of the Hanseatic League. After a lecture on Communist and post-communist Poland, enjoy our welcome dinner at a local restaurant. D THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11: GDANSK This morning travel by ferry to the Westerplatte Peninsula on the Baltic, where the Second World War began on September 1, 1939, and visit the War Memorial. Then drive to Gdynia, stopping en route to see the Oliwa district with it s impressive cathedral and famed Baroque organs. Admire historic ships moored alongside the wharf. An economist will talk about Gdynia s regeneration efforts, access to education, and how the shipyard workers contributed to this success FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12: GDANSK A private before-hours tour at the Museum of the Second World War provides background on Poland s history during that dark time. Continue on a visit to the Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork a superb example of medieval defense architecture. Learn about Poland s Slavic ancestry, Christianization, and feudal system in the context of this UNESCO World Heritage Site., D TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9: DEPARTURE Depart for Gdańsk, Poland, on an overnight flight via Munich. with the Solidarity movement or Solidarność under the leadership of Lech Walesa. Following lunch continue to Sopot, the fashionable seaside resort where you can see the oldest and longest wooden pier in Europe. Return to Gdańsk for an evening at leisure in this fascinating city. POLAND: THEN & NOW OCTOBER 9-20, 2018 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13: GDANSK / WARSAW Drive to Warsaw with a stop for lunch in Toruń, the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus and one of the most magnificent cities in Poland. Its Old Town has been included on UNESCO s list for its impressive 13th-century Town Hall, superb churches, and historic streets. Arrive in Warsaw and check in at hotel Raffles Europejski. In the late afternoon take a walking tour through the Old Town reduced to rubble in World War II and now gloriously restored. Dinner is at a local restaurant., D
YOUR ITINERARY (cont.) SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14: WARSAW A lecture on Poland s current politics precedes a briefing at the U.S. Embassy (pending confirmation). Following lunch, depart on an architectural tour and view the ornate Palace of Culture and Science, built by Stalin. Pass by Castle Square en route to Lazienki Park and Palace, summer residence of the last King of Poland. At the Saxon Gardens, modeled on the gardens at Versailles, view the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the only surviving part of the Saxon Palace. Then embark on a musical journey through the compositions of Frédéric Chopin, at an afternoon piano recital. MONDAY, OCTOBER 15: WARSAW Gather this morning for a panel discussion on business environment and investment climate versus main trends in the global economy, joined by Newsweek journalists. After lunch, a moving exploration of Warsaw s Jewish history takes us to the former Warsaw Ghetto, where bullet holes from the Nazi liquidation still mark the walls, and to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, where we will meet with the director. Then visit the Nozyk Synagogue (the only surviving prewar synagogue), and the poignant Jewish cemetery. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16: WARSAW / KRAKÓW Depart by train for Kraków. On arrival, visit UNESCO-listed Wawel Castle, one of the greatest Renaissance palaces north of the Alps. Following check in at our hotel in the Old Town, see the nearby medieval market square and visit the impressive Gothic church. At St. Mary s Basilica, marvel at the elaborate wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, considered the greatest masterpiece of Gothic art in Poland., D WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17: KRAKÓW This morning tour the campus of Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364. See the 15th-century Collegium Maius and St. Anne s Church, a major work of Polish Baroque architecture. Continue to the National Museum, now home to Leonardo da Vinci s rarely seen Lady with an Ermine. After lunch the afternoon is at leisure. Those who wish to further examine the consequences of the Holocaust may join an optional visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18: KRAKÓW / WROCLAW At a morning lecture discuss Poland s declining industries, and the boom of outsourcing, off-shoring, and subcontracting. Also learn how Wroclaw (formerly Breslau) in the Silesian region became home to Poland s largest concentration of internet-based firms. Enjoy a wine tasting and a picnic lunch at a vineyard, then continue to Wroclaw and check in to our hotel. A brief walking tour is followed by dinner at a local restaurant., D FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19: WROCLAW Today we focus on Wroclaw as well as the city s historic center. See the Rynek (market square), restored to its prewar splendor; the magnificent Gothic Town Hall; and 14th-century St. Elizabeth s Church, boasting lovely vistas from its tower. Continue to the Salt Market (Plac Solny), with its colorful Renaissance and Baroque houses, and Wroclaw University s spectacular Leopoldina Hall. Cross the Odra River to explore Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), the oldest part of the city.
