Executive Summary In Canada, there is a lot of competition for selling garden centre items at supermarkets, florists, temporary corner lot nurseries, landscape supply stores and box stores. According to Euromonitor International, in 2014, home and garden specialist retailers recorded sales of C$47 billion. There has been an increasing trend towards a preference for big-box retailers in this market segment. High-volume box stores such as Lowe s, Rona, Walmart, Home Depot, and Canadian Tire compete in this market segment by offering items at a discount and also by promoting convenience shopping. The selection at these retailers is not as varied as it is at a traditional garden centre, so cost differentials on offered products has become increasingly competitive. Big-box retailers may find it easier to sell standardized items such as soil, fertilizer, stones, and garden tools and are more than likely able to offer them at reduced prices in comparison to garden centres offerings. Seasonal garden centres at big-box retailers have been improving over the last number of years. They are becoming more efficient and are offering increasingly superior products. We here at Field Agent feel that this industry has become increasingly competitive in recent years and sent out Field Agents across Canada to compare prices on standardized seasonal garden centre items at big-box stores. Findings: Overall, Home Depot appears to have lower prices than other retailers. Customers that purchase higherpriced products such as lawn seed and fertilizer can realize significant savings by shopping around. Smaller-priced items such as weed control spray have price differences amongst different retailers but generally have smaller price spreads.
