4 Unit Placement Electrical Shock Hazard This unit must be installed by a qualified, skilled electrician familiar with installing explosion-proof electrical equipment in order to ensure compatibility of unit specifications to power source and grounding compliance. Grounding requirements for hazardous areas are specified in Article 501 (and Article 250) of the National Electrical Code. Also, consult local electrical code requirements. All units are provided with an equipment grounding lead that should be used as the primary equipment ground connection for the unit. Cautions The Explosion-Proof Stirring Hot Plate is shipped with a wooden shipping support attached to the bottom that needs to be removed prior to permanent installation. Minimum allowable spacing between stirring hot plate and any vertical surface is one inch (2.54 cm). DO NOT install where the marked operating temperature exceeds the ignition temperature of the hazardous atmosphere(s) in order to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. Requirements The Explosion-Proof Stirring Hot Plate is designed for permanent installation. Permanent installation is made possible with integral mounting lugs and 1/2 (1.3 cm) conduit with 18 (45.7 cm) of lead wire provided. Allow space for ventilation. Electrical specifications are located on the back of the stirring hot plate. Consult customer service (1-800-523-5874) if your electrical service is different than that listed on the specification plate. The Explosion-Proof Stirring Hot Plate leads are factory sealed to meet the requirements of Article 501 of the National Electrical Codes (NEC). The Explosion-Proof Stirring Hot Plate must be hardwired per NEC (USA) or CEC (Canada) requirements. The installation must conform with installation requirements for electrical equipment intended for use in Class I, Group C and D hazardous locations as defined by the NEC and electrical code requirements of your area. Install on a level, sturdy surface. An external switch or circuit breaker needs to be included in the building installation in close proximity of the unit as a means to disconnect supply circuit. Over-current protection devices should be included in the installation. The unit can be connected to a branch circuit not exceeding 20 Amps. Operation Warning To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT use this product for anything other than its intended purpose. The top plate uses a tubular heating element cast into an aluminum top plate. A primary electronic feedback control is used to regulate and limit the temperature of the plate under normal operating conditions. Should the primary electronic control fail, there is a secondary, bimetallic thermostat that controls the temperature. The secondary control will limit the top plate temperature to 280 C (536 F). An electronic control regulates the stirring speed. The stirring motor is enclosed in an explosion-proof casing. Together, the motor and a strong magnet provide excellent miscibility when used with a stir bar. The aluminum, explosion-proof enclosure houses all control and electrical connections.

Heating Specifications for Cast-in Tubular Heating Element Cautions Maximum load of the top plate is 25 lb (11.3 kg). The aluminum top plate is easily stained. Clean by wiping the top plate using a non-abrasive cloth lightly dampened with water. DO NOT use a wire brush to clean the unit. Using a wire brush will modify the integrity of the surface and it could affect your heat stability. Heating Metal Vessels Note Dial marks for heat control knob settings are for reference only. The dial marks indicate approximate hot plate temperature in C (±15 C). It takes 60 minutes for a one liter flask, filled with 600 ml of water, to vigorously boil when the maximum set point is 230 o C (446 o F). Hot Surface Caution: Hot Surface. Avoid Contact. The top plate will remain hot for some time after the unit is turned off without any visual indications that it is still hot. 5 Metal vessels may be heated safely on the unit without the danger of the vessel reflecting enough heat back to the top to cause the aluminum to soften. The internal electronic control will regulate the aluminum top plate temperature. Heating Specifications Temperature range at the center of hotplate 38 C - 218 C ± 3 C Temperature cut-off 235 C ± 9 C Setting the Temperature Turn the Dial Control Switch clockwise to the desired temperature. Dial marks indicate approximate surface temperature in C. When the temperature for a given dial setting has been reached, the control will regulate the hot plate. To turn OFF hot plate, turn dial switch fully counterclockwise to the OFF position. Heat-up time to maximum temperature (218 C, unloaded top plate) Temperature stability at center of top plate surface at 70 C: Temperature stability at center of top plate surface at 218 C Uniformity of top plate surface at 70 C (center to 1 or 2.54 cm from corners) Uniformity of top plate surface at 218 C (center to 1 or 2.54 cm from corners) 16.5 minutes at nominal voltage ±1 C ±3 C ±2 C ±10 C Warning To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, the aluminum explosion-proof enclosure chambers must be kept closed, with screws securely tightened, whenever the unit is in operation and/or connected to power supply circuit. Temperature cycling over a temperature range greater than 5 C with a period of approximately 6 minutes may be observed when operating unit at 220 C or higher. If such cycling is observed, the unit is functioning under abnormal or fault conditions and the secondary bimetallic thermostat is controlling the top plate temperature. If this occurs, do the following: 1. Turn unit OFF at both the heat and stir dial switches and the external circuit breaker 2. Allow unit to cool completely. 3. In an atmosphere absolutely free of flammable liquids, gases, and/or vapors, test the heat control function of the unit at several temperature settings within the range of 38 C to 220 C. If the top plate temperature of the unit again cycles with a period of approximately 6 minutes over a temperature range greater than 5 C when ramping to or operating at 220 C, call customer service at 1-800-523-5874. To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, do not use electrical equipment such as a thermocouple or pyrometer to monitor the hot plate temperature unless it is UL listed for the same hazardous atmospheres and temperature rating as the unit. The thermocouple and pyrometer could serve as a source of ignition.

Stirring Speed Specifications 6 Note Speed range is 60 1200 rpm, dependent upon viscosity of solution used. Stability of the stirring speed setting using a 4 liter flask with 2 liters of water is ±3 rpm. Maximum flask size is 4 liters. Dial marks for speed control knob settings indicate approximate RPMs only (±20 rpm). Setting the Stirring Speed The power switch for the stirrer is turned ON/OFF by using the stir dial switch. Power is ON when stir dial is turned clockwise, past the zero OFF mark (0). To set the stir control to desired speed, tum dial switch clockwise until the dial pointer is aligned with the selected dial mark (indicating rpms). Stirring Speed Guide Flask Size 1 L Stir Bar Size Amount of Solution 1 L 2 600 ml Viscosity Maximum Speed* 600 ml Water 1,200 rpm 1 L 600 ml Corn oil 1,200 rpm 500 ml 350 ml 30 weight motor oil 1,265 centipoise viscosity std. 950 rpm 400 rpm *Maximum speed obtained without the stir bar losing coupling with the Plate magnet. 1 L 350 ml Light corn syrup 70 rpm Resetting the Stirring Motor When the Over-Current Protection Device is Activated The stirring motor is equipped with an over-current protection device. Should this device be activated, the stirring motor will shut off. To reset the motor: 1. Turn unit OFF at both the dial power switches and the external circuit breaker. 2. Allow unit to cool. 3. Turn the external circuit breaker back on. If the over-current protection device is repeatedly activated during normal operation, please call Customer Service at 1-800-523-5874. Maintenance Cautions The unit does not contain serviceable parts. Repairs should not be performed on this product, due to the risk of the ignition of hazardous atmospheres. Due to the nature of this product, operator safety will be endangered should maintenance or servicing be performed on it by the operator.
