Presentation Overview Focus on application of waterborne polyvinyl acetate (PVA) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesives Brief discussion on starch-based adhesive applications Will not cover polyvinyl alcohol adhesive applications Contact and non-contact applicators Extrusion and spray guns Manual and fully-automatic systems Complete system configurations Applications Two short videos Rheology and viscosity
Starch-based Applications Corrugated sheet manufacturing Applied w/ open pots/large rollers that contact paper
Starch-based Applications Multi-wall bag manufacturing Pet food and fertilizer bags Applied w/ rollers or basic nozzle systems
PVA / EVA Applicators Contact applicators touch the substrate to apply the adhesive: Single-bead or multi-bead applicators Can also be applied by a roller/open pot Contact, Multi-Bead Non-contact applicators apply the adhesive without contacting the substrate: Many apply single extruded beads Multi-bead nozzles are available Spray guns Apply a pattern of adhesive similar to a paint spray gun Non-Contact, Multi-Bead
PVA / EVA Systems Manual systems Typically simple hand gun systems w/ pressure tank Automatic systems Used on high volume production lines Combination of hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic components
Manual Hand Gun System Compressed Air Input Pressure Tank Hand Spray Gun
Automatic System Pattern Controller Encoder (Speed Tracking) Photo Eyes (Product Sensing) Air Run-up Automatic Glue Pressure Control Adhesive Supply (55 Gallon Drum, Tote Bin, or Central Pumping System) Diaphragm Pump Non-Contact, Single Bead Guns
Automatic System
PVA / EVA Applications Packaging Combined with hot melt for increased adhesion Paper and paperboard products Envelopes Direct mail promotions Corrugated boxes Paperboard cartons Bags and sacks
Applications Packaging Dual Gluing: Waterborne & Hot Melt
Applications Corrugated Box Manufacturing: Multi-Bead, Non-Contact
Applications Corrugated Box Manufacturing: Multi-Bead, Contact
Applications Folding Carton Manufacturing: Single-Bead, Non-Contact
Applications Folding Carton Manufacturing: Roller/Open Pot
Rheology Rheology is defined as the science of deformation and flow of soft matter. In practice, the word "rheology" normally refers to the flow and deformation of "non-classical" materials such as rubber, molten plastics, polymer solutions, slurries and pastes, electro-rheological fluids, blood, muscle, composites, soils, and paints. These materials can exhibit varied and striking rheological properties that classical fluid mechanics and elasticity cannot describe. Though the word "rheology" was coined in 1929, the rapid development of the subject began 20 years later. (From the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Engineering)
Viscosity Wheel or roller applications typically use thicker waterborne adhesives that range from 2000 cps. to 5000 cps. Rheology is normally not an issue with roller applications Contact extrusion applicators use adhesives that are in the 1000 cps. to 2500 cps. range Rheology is normally not a big concern with contact applications Non-contact applicators are more sensitive to viscosity and require products in the 250 cps. to 800 cps. range Rheology is of key importance particularly as production speeds increase to over 1000 pieces per minute, i.e., two 600 cps. adhesives can machine totally different in an enclosed, pressurized system.
Wrap-up Focused on application of waterborne PVA and EVA adhesives Briefly discussed starch-based adhesive applications Contact and non-contact applicators Extrusion and spray guns Manual and automatic systems Complete system configurations Applications Corrugated video Folding carton video Rheology Viscosity
