The appropriate power cable should be connected BEFORE connection to the power supply. General Description The Cole-Parmer Analog Melting Point Apparatus has been designed to be quick and easy to operate making it ideal for educational use. Supplied with a nonhazardous, spirit-filled mercury-free thermometer. Using the manually adjustable heating rate, the block will rapidly heat samples up to 20 C per minute to the melt temperature and up to the maximum temperature of 250 C. An accurate reading to within 1 C of the melt temperature can be achieved by using a slower heating rate of between 1 and 10 C per minute. The sample is observed through the magnifying lens until the melt occurs and the melt temperature read from the thermometer. Up to three samples can be viewed and tested at any one time. Samples are illuminated by a bright white LED and viewed via a magnifying lens. The magnifying lens can be detached for cleaning using the simple instructions printed on the instrument. Available separately are packs of capillary tubes that have been pre-sealed, a brass plug to speed cooling time and spare thermometers. Please visit the Cole-Parmer website www.coleparmer.com for further information. Safety Advice Users should be aware of the following safety advice: HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE DANGEROUS as they can cause serious burns to operators and ignite combustible material. USE CARE AND WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES TO PROTECT HANDS. DO NOT use combustible substances near hot objects. Never lift or carry the instrument until it has been switched off and allowed to cool for at least 30 minutes. The thermometer markings will give guidance. The unit should be carried using both hands with the fingers under the side edges. Never move or carry the unit while still connected to the power supply. DO NOT position the unit such that it is difficult to disconnect it from the power by removing the power cable from the socket at the back. 4

1. Insert the thermometer. 2. Insert a 1.9mm sealed end capillary tube with sample into block. 3. Set the heating controller to 20 C/min. Before Use Place the Analog Melting Point Apparatus on a firm, level surface and apply the instruction label before inserting the thermometer and applying power. Select the appropriate choice of self-adhesive instruction label from the multi-language set provided. Peel off the backing and apply the label to the area indicated (See Figure 3). Apply the label carefully using a flat object to smooth away air bubbles. Insert the bulb of the thermometer into the side of the heating block (see Figure 4) while resting the other end in the slot on the right-hand side. Connect unit to the power supply and switch ON using the control dial. Instructions for use Thermometer Instructions for use 4. Reduce to 10 C/min once the thermometer reaches 60% of the expected melting point. 5. Continue to reduce so heating rate is on 1 C/min when within 15 C of expected melt. 6. Observe the melt through the eyepiece, while recording the temperature on the thermometer. 7. Turn off to begin cooling. A brass plug can be used if more rapid cooling is required. Heating block Figure 3 Figure 4 NOTE: It is recommended that the instrument be kept in the original packaging between uses to maintain optimum condition. Operation The Analog Melting Point Apparatus allows up to three samples to be placed in sealed glass capillary tubes which are then inserted into the sample chamber. This block is heated and the sample observed through the magnifying lens until the melt occurs. Measuring a Melting Point Caution: The heating block may be HOT. 1. Prepare sample by placing a small amount in the end of a sealed capillary tube. 2. Insert the sealed end of the capillary tube into the side of the heating block via the holes provided (see Figure 5) and adjust the positioning of the sample by viewing it through the lens. NOTE: If the unit has been used recently the block may be too hot for your sample. If this is the case, turn the control dial to OFF and allow the unit to cool before proceeding. 5

NOTE: A maximum of three capillary tubes can be inserted at any one time. Capillary tube Thermometer Lens Thermometer Heating block Capillary tube Figure 5 Figure 6 3. Decide on a suitable plateau temperature. This should be approximately 10 C below the expected melting point of the sample. If the melting point is unknown, it may require a trial run to gauge an approximate temperature range and determine the ideal heating curve. NOTE: Example of an ideal heating curve for a melting point of 240 C shown below. Ideal heating curve Dial settings Block temperature Melting point 300 250 Max 10 C/min 1 C/min Temperature C 200 150 100 50 0 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 Time (min) Figure 7 4. Move the control dial from OFF and set to MAX until the thermometer reads 80% of the expected melting point. Reduce the control dial to 10 C/min, by turning the dial counter-clockwise. 5. Use the control dial to reduce the heating rate to 1 C/min when the thermometer reads within 15 C of the expected melting point. 6. Observe the samples through the lens until a melt occurs and record the temperature on the thermometer. 7. Turn the control dial to OFF and allow the capillary tubes and block to cool down before next use or placing into storage. 6

Cleaning and Care WARNING: Ensure the unit is disconnected from the power supply before attempting maintenance or servicing. The unit should be cleaned using a damp cloth and a mild detergent solution. Cleaning is made easier if spillages are attended to promptly. In any case, spillages of acids and alkalies MUST be removed immediately as these chemicals can attack and damage the casework finish. Ensure that the appropriate safety precautions are observed. WARNING: Ensure appropriate protective clothing is worn when handling broken glass. In the event of any breakage of the thermometer bulb or capillary tubes, immediately disconnect the unit from the power supply. Any debris may be removed by unscrewing the dome cap nuts holding the lens and then lifting the lens out (see Figure 7). The instrument can then be turned upside down so that any debris falls out. Once the lens has been removed, the chamber can be cleaned with a damp cloth or soft brush. Dome Cap Nuts (x3) Figure 7 Servicing and Repair This product range does not require any routine servicing.
