Competence for Safety Within the scope of the creation of the explosion protection document (mandatory for the operator according to ATEX 137), production locations must be divided into zones depending on their ignition hazard potential. ATEX Category 3 Description Category 3 equipment can be used in zones in which potentially explosive atmospheres do not occur during normal operation or only for a short period of time like zone 2 for gases and zone 22 for dusts. Zone 22 is divided into two kinds of dust: Conductive dust: use of category 2 equipment Non-conductive dust: use of category 3 equipment It is also permitted to use equipment with a higher equipment category rating. However, the procurement of this kind of equipment is more expensive, but it does increase safety and provides you with more flexibility if you frequently change the zone divisions during operation. Typical zone 2 areas are areas that encompass zone 0 or 1. Typical zone 22 areas are areas in the vicinity of equipment that contain dust which can escape from leaks and form dust deposits in hazardous quantities. The tank stands in the open, is filled and drained regularly and has a pressure equalization opening. The flashpoint of the combustible liquid is near the annual average temperature therefore, it is has been accepted that there is a longterm potentially explosive atmosphere in the tank interior: Zone 0. Vapors will occasionally vent out of the pressure equalization opening and form a potentially explosive mixture therefore, the area around the opening: Zone 1. Vapors can flow downwards on the tank wall under unfavorable atmospheric conditions therefore, the area around the tank: Zone 2 A dusty, combustible product is ground and filled in the mill. The initial product is manually filled into a holding tank. Because this occasionally causes a potentially explosive dust/air mixture to form: Zone 21 The area around the holding tank has dust deposits that are not likely to be dispersed, but if they are, for a short period only: Zone 22 Liquid surface Example of a zone division for combustible fluids (gases) and combustible dust The mill has a constant dust cloud even when cleaning the filter hoses: Zone 20 The ground product is continuously discharged therefore, in the discharge tank: Zone 20 Dust deposits are in the discharge area due to leaks: Zone 22

The size of the respective area (zones) depends on several factors, e.g. amount of dust or availability of natural ventilation, frequency of filling and drainage, etc. The different zones are designated with different shadings/ dottings in the corresponding diagrams or drawings in the explosion protection document. The manufacturer submits a Declaration of Conformity. This is provided to the customer with the operating instructions, e.g. a Sartorius scale for zone 2 and/or 22 (equipment category 3). Sartorius also provides the customer with installation and safety instructions for the category 3 equipment. Declaration of Conformity from the Manufacturer Contrary to equipment category 1 and 2, no type examination test is required for equipment category 3. Instead, the manufacturer can evaluate for himself the requirements of the equipment directive (ATEX 95 - binding for the manufacturer) for the corresponding type of ignition protection using corresponding technical knowledge. Typical Type of Ignition Protection for Category 3 Equipment: "n" The n type of ignition protection has several implementation types that are designated with a second letter. You will find these types of ignition protection in Sartorius products for zone 2, for example: na: nc: nr: nl: non-sparking non-incendive components (circuits), also hermeti cally sealed or encapsulated device protected by a restricted breathing enclosure energy limited SARTORIUS AG Göttingen (Germany) Weender Landstr. 94-108 Typ: IU.4-... / Option Y2 IF.4-... / Option Y2 Modell Ser.-Nr. Flexibility in powering Sartorius products for use in zone 1, 20 or 21 In hazardous areas, the ambient conditions for the power supply vary considerably. Sartorius has responded to these requirements by offering explosion-protected scales that are independent of a specific power supply design. You can choose from the following power supplies that are available in the various international versions: Power supply for installation in a hazardous area (110 240 V) Rechargeable battery for installation in a hazardous area (110 240V) Power supply for installation in a non-hazardous area (110 240V) 24-volt module for installation in a non-hazardous or hazardous area (24 VDC); can also be installed in a control panel Flexible data communication between hazardous area equipment and non-hazardous area peripherals Usually, weighing equipment is connected to a report printer, a or a PLC located in the non-hazardous area. Both the hazardous and the non-hazardous area must be electrically isolated from each other. Sartorius offers various solutions for isolation of intrinsically safe from non-intrinsically safe circuits. These solutions are compatible for all Sartorius product families: Zener barriers for different applications A universally configurable interface converter that can also be installed in zone 2 Independently of the particular data interface selected for the scale (RS- 232C, RS-422, RS-485, TTY 20 ma) and the transmission rate, Sartorius Zener barriers and interface converters enable communication over various distances between peripherals in the nonhazardous area and the hazardous-area equipment. Up to 8 client weighing devices with an RS-485 data interface can be networked in a hazardous area. 22
