lobal Finishing Solutions Global Finishing Solutions heritage spans back to the late 1800 s. Initial roots go back as far as 1888 and the days of Dr. Allen DeVilbiss. When the world s first atomizer was invented for use in the health care industry, it didn t take long for this innovative technology to be adapted for other uses, including the spray application of paint. Effectively replacing the brush-and-can method of painting in manufacturing processes, production efficiency was taken to a whole new level. However, this increased production was hindered for a long time by the extensive drying times of the sprayed paint. Eventually, numerous companies began to manufacture engineered rooms for spray painting. These rooms gave the painters a safer environment in which to work, and featured controlled ventilation and increased airflow which decreased the required drying time. These rooms, henceforth known as paint booths or spray booths, were the key to producing a quality finish. Through the years, more and more engineering was put into these rooms. Industrial air heaters, specialized control systems, and other types of technologically advanced features began to be introduced into the paint booth industry. Truck Refinish Spray Booths GFS Truck Refinish Spray Booths provide a safe and efficient working environment for your operation. The latest technology combined with over seventy years of proven experience ensures you of a high production facility that will reward you with years of dependable service. Quality Construction Dual Skin (Insulated), Single Skin Precoat (Rolled-Edge) or Galvanized 18-gauge wall panels. Booth super structure utilizes components ranging from 11-14-gauge steel. I-Beam construction (optional). Bolt & nut (5/16) or industry exclusive H-Channel wall construction are utilized to assemble the booth. All booths are constructed of galvanized or galvanized white precoat steel. Industrial grade hardware and hinges. More Choices Flexible modular design allows for multiple combinations in length and width. Lengths available in 3 foot increments from 24 feet. Airflow Options The airstream moving through the booth gathers the solids and transports them to the filtration medium. The force and direction of the air, the efficiency of the filtration, and the characteristics of the coating equipment, these three elements, determine not only the overall efficiency of the coating operation, but also the quality of the finish. GFS offers 3 airflow systems: Downdraft, Side-Downdraft and Crossdraft. Semi-Downdraft airflow is also available (not illustrated) as a special order option; contact GFS for details. Downdraft Design In a Downdraft booth, air is introduced into the booth through a ceiling designed intake plenum located at the top of the booth enclosure. The intake plenum is designed with high efficiency intake filters to remove dust and dirt before it enters the paint booth. Air is then pulled vertically downward from the ceiling of the booth across the truck, where it picks up particulates, and to the floor. The air then flows into a filtered exhaust pit or platform located in the floor of the booth and then is exhausted into atmosphere. Side-Downdraft Design Crossdraft Design (Pressurized) Air is introduced through an intake plenum located at the front of the booth enclosure. It then enters the booth flowing parallel to the floor across the truck, where it picks up particulates. From there it flows into a filter bank at the rear of the enclosure, where particulates are captured, and then it is exhausted into the atmosphere. No pit or elevated platform is required for a crossdraft booth. Air is pulled into a Side Downdraft booth through a filtered full-length ceiling plenum, where dust and dirt are removed. The air then passes into the booth parallel to the walls, across the truck, where it picks up particulates, and then perpendicular to the floor. When the air reaches the floor, it is pulled into and through floor level filtered exhaust plenums that run down each side of the booth. Here the air is filtered to remove particulate and into the atmosphere. No pit is required for a sidedowndraft booth. 2

Controls Control Panels All GFS Truck and Large Equipment control panels are produced in-house in GFS' own state-of-the-art electrical facility. GFS does not rely on purchasing off-the-shelf control panels modified to fit an application, rather GFS designs and builds each panel to fit needs required for each individual application. Standard Control Panels Operate the fan, motor and lights. The panel enclosure includes panel mounted disconnect, magnetic motor stater with overloads, fuse branch circuits, panel mounted controls, and lighting transformer based on panel. Deluxe Control Panels These control panels are designed for applications such as booths with air makeup units, multiple booth operations or booths with automatic air balancing systems. Each control panel is designed for a single point wiring connection. All control wires are numbered for easy wire identification. All components are labeled to match electrical schematic. Includes terminal strip for field wiring. Air Balancing Systems (optional) A key to achieving a clean paint job is properly pressuring a paint booth. An Auto Balance System, which will properly pressurize a booth, is designed to automatically keep the booth balanced during operation. This system consists of a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) that controls the exhaust fan motor, differential pressure gauge and sensing probes. The system monitors the interior booth pressure and will adjust the exhaust fan RPM's to what is needed for the volume of exhaust air, based on the incoming intake air velocity. The result is a booth that is balanced automatically and will stay in balance as the filters load up with paint overspray. This system will increase useful filter life, provide a constant airflow through the booth and automatically control booth pressure. Curing/Bake Systems Variable Speed Unit: The air replacement unit is designed with a variable speed drive/motor and damper package to discharge either 140 F or 160 F air for accelerated curing cycle. This design reduces airflow 50% during the curing mode. This system always uses outside air during the cure mode to ensure good clean air for the cure cycle. This system also includes an auto-balance system with a variable frequency drive to automatically adjust the airflow of the exhaust fan(s), to ensure proper booth balance, not only during the curing mode but during the painting mode as well. Re-Circulating Feature (optional) During the cure cycle, once the air has passed through the working chamber, 20% of the air is pulled through filters and back to the air replacement unit. There it is combined with 20% fresh new air, reheated and returned to the working chamber. The 20% air not returned to the air replacement unit is filtered and exhausted directly into the atmosphere through ducting. Automatic sensors and pressure monitors continually adjust to maintain the most consistent working environment, the most efficient operation and lowest operating costs. The value of a recirculating system lies in the preservation of resources: the working air is used over before its heat is lost. Force-Dry Feature (optional) An economical approach to paint curing is to reduce airflow 50% during the curing mode, referred to as Force-Dry. Frequently Asked Questions Q. What should I expect from a new spray booth? A. Filtration: Quality finishes require clean contaminate-free air. This is accomplished by proper air filtration. GFS uses a combination of pre-filters to capture large particles and debris, and high efficiency intake filters before the air enters the booth. In addition, the air is filtered again before it is re-circulated or exhausted from the booth. Airflow: Proper airflow in the booth is accomplished by creating a flow of air that envelopes the vehicle during booth operation. This airflow, referred to as laminar air, is responsible for carrying away the paint overspray during the refinish process and air movement during paint curing. Lighting: Another key element is Bright, Shadow-Free Light throughout the booth. GFS utilizes the T-8 (color corrected) light fixtures, in the proper quantity and correct location, creating an environment that allows for color match and proper paint flow identification. Q. Where does GFS manufacture their spray booths? A. All GFS booths are produced in North America by GFS in a GFS plant. GFS has more in-house component manufacturing capability than any other booth manufacturer in North America. Q. What is a pressurized paint booth, and what are the benefits of pressuring the booth? A. The term pressurized refers to the amount of air inside the booth vs. the amount of air outside the booth. The booth when properly balanced should be slightly positive, meaning that the amount of air flowing into the booth is slightly greater than the amount of air that is allowed to leave. The advantage is that positive pressure keeps unwanted dirt and debris from entering the booth. Any leaks in the seals or joints are going out, not in, thus providing a cleaner paint environment. Q. What is a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) A. VFDs have been developed to reduce energy costs on equipment that utilize electric motors. This is accomplished by preventing power spikes during motor startup (soft starts). Most utility rates are calculated at the highest peak rate obtained during use. Controlling these peaks or spikes during motor startup reduces energy costs. Q. What if a standard booth needs modifications? A. GFS understands that there will be instances where shop layout, vehicle size, as well as other factors, will require a spray booth to be custom engineered. In these situations GFS' staff of engineers and drafters will utilize modeling software such as Inventor, Solid Edges or JAZ CD Draw FP to create a parametric product model of the custom engineered booth. These programs also allows GFS to check both fit, finish and function from a digital prototype. Width - To determine the necessary width, measure width of the largest article and add 5 feet to allow for access to the sides of the equipment. Height - The height of the booth is determined by the overall height of the largest item plus two feet clearance. Ample room should be allowed for the finisher to spray the top and bottom of the object. Working Height Working Width Bridge Plenum Working Depth Depth - Working depth should be sufficient for the object to be within the enclosure plus 3 feet clearance at the rear (from the filters). 17

Q. How can I benefit by having an 80/20 Re-circulating System? A. The air replacement unit is designed to discharge 140-160 degree F air into the paint booth. It is equipped with a damper system that allows 80% heated re-circulated air to be pulled back into the air replacement unit and then discharged into the booth. The ability to re-circulate the heated air rather than heating ambient air will provide a great energy cost savings during curing mode. This option can be easily added to the GFS Control Panel. Q. What is Explosion Relief? Do I need Explosion Relief to meet code? A. If your booth is equipped with a cure cycle you will need Explosion Relief to meet code. The following is how Explosion Relief is defined. Fuel Fired furnaces that contain flammable liquids or gases shall be equipped with unobstructed explosion relief. The amount of space required is calculated by taking the volume of the booth (cubic feet) and dividing it by 15. NFPA 33/86 requires 1 square foot of explosion relief per 15 cubic feet of booth volume. GFS will engineer the booth to meet or exceed the above criteria. Q. What is temperature rise? And why is it important? A. The temperature rise is the discharge air temperature from the unit, above the ambient outside air temperature. An example would be: the facility is located in an area where the winter low temperature may be -10 F, desired temperature is 70 F, therefore a unit with a 90 degree rise would provide 80 degree process air with -10 F outside air. The temp rise is a very important factor when selecting an Air Replacement Unit. If you receive a quote that does not show you a temp rise on the air replacement unit, encourage your supplier to provide that information to you. Q. What does GFS recommend for a cure temperature? A. GFS recommends a discharge temperature of 140 degrees F. When selecting an Air Replacement Unit, it is recommended that you attain the proper information to ensure the Air Replacement Unit can reach the desired curing temperature. GFS also suggests contacting your paint distributor for the recommended cure temperature for the paint you use. Q. Do GFS spray booths meet Code? A. All booths manufactured by GFS, are designed to meet all OSHA Standards, as well as those of NFPA-33. The booth walls themselves are constructed of 18-gauge steel, as per N.F.P.A. Chapter 3, paragraph 3-1.1. The lights within a 3 foot radius of any booth openings are Class I, Division II, Group A,B,C,D, as per N.F.P.A.-33, Chapter 3, figure 3 and paragraph 4-7.4. A manometer (or visible draft gauge) is standard on all booths. All lights are ETL Listed and motors are UL Listed. Unit meets BOCA code, fire suppression, equipment Q. What is Economy Mode? A. This is an accessory that we add to the GFS Control Panel. The air replacement unit is designed with a variable frequency drive and damper package. The system also includes an auto-balance system with a variable frequency drive to automatically adjust the airflow of the exhaust fan (s), to ensure proper booth balance. Along with this system is a gun hanger switch, located inside the booth that controls the booth function from paint mode to energy saving mode. When the paint gun is hanging on the hook the booth will automatically switch to the saving mode. Q. How long does it take for delivery after you order the spray booth? A. Once the payment method is accepted, it normally takes 7-10 weeks to get your Spray Booth. All GFS booths are made to order. Your booth will be built specifically to your specifications. Q. Where can I purchase replacement parts for my spray booth? A. Replacement parts and filters can be purchased through one of GFS' Auto Refinish Distributors. 18
