Mayor and City Council Update May 4, 2018 To: Mayor and Council From: Administration CC: Department Heads Community Relations The Jonquil Festival is estimated to have been attended by 35,000 40,000 people over the two days of the Festival; no protesters attended. The Jonquil City Jog registration was reported to be 760 on race day with 42 of those racers being City of Smyrna Employees and a few of their spouses. The new mobile hydraulic stage (SL 100) is expected to be ready to leave the manufacturer on or around May 11, 2018 with an onsite trainer from the manufacturer coming to Smyrna to train and certify a minimum of two (up to four) City staff members ( technicians once trained and certified). The training is a three-day comprehensive training program which will take place May 15 th, 16 th and 17 th. Library News Citizens Academy: Library Director Mary Moore presented at the Citizens Academy on Tuesday, May 1 st. The class discussed the history, mission and services of Smyrna Library and the Friends of Smyrna Library. The participants had a hands-on demonstration of Ozobots, which are one of the Library s STEM resources for teens and tweens. The class also took a pop quiz to determine whether they have the chops to be a professional librarian; two participants received a passing grade and took home a free book. First Sunday Lecture: Kathryn Jackson-Van Detta, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited of Vinings, will talk about the most popular birds of Smyrna and how to attract them to your yard. The lecture is Sunday, May 6 th at 3pm in the Library Meeting Room. The water was blasting and a great time was had by all, including the adults.

Keep Smyrna Beautiful The Keep Smyrna Beautiful Garden Tour tickets are on sale now. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and available at the Recycling Center, Community Center, and various retailers in Smyrna. The event is May 19. The Recycling Center has increased tonnage 35% since moving into the new location almost three years ago. Virginia Davis is retiring after 14 years with KSB. Plans are in process for her retirement celebration. The Recycling Center is looking for 2 part-time employees to work on Saturdays. Public Works Spring Road Improvement Project: Staff, Croy Engineering, and the owner of Baldwin Paving met this week to discuss their lack of progress addressing the final punch list and closeout of this project. Baldwin Paving indicates that the project will be complete by May 14, 2018. Saturday paving is scheduled from 9:00am to 3:00pm to repair one lane at the intersection of Cumberland Pkwy and Spring Road east bound. Windy Hill Road Blvd. Project: Quotes continue to be secured for the abatement and demolition of 555 and 743 Windy Hill Road. An asbestos survey has been requested for 765 Windy Hill Road. Asbestos survey results have not been received as of yet for 815 and 907 Windy Hill. Paving Projects: The punch list remains at 75% complete. Bids were opened for the 2018 resurfacing projects and scheduled to be awarded on June 4th. Pat Mell Road Drainage Project: The contractor is complete with the pipe installation. They are currently working on the Concrete ditch cap of the roadway. Work remaining is curbing, catch basins, road repairs and landscaping. The project is about 60% complete. Walker Ct. Storm Drain: The project is 100% complete and punch list inspection was conducted and issued to the contractor. The contractor did not work on the punch list this week. Spring Drive Curb Replacement: The project is about 100% complete with curb work and 70% complete with landscaping. Public Works Storm Sewer Rehab and Detention: The contractor did not work on the project this week. Roswell Street Round-a-bout: The contractor began locating underground utilities this week. Reed House: Georgia Power indicated all the parking lot and driveway lighting fixtures are now at their storage facility. The last item that controls the timing of the lights has not come in but is expected within a couple weeks. At that time Georgia Power can then install the lighting fixtures.
Repairs and replacement of sidewalk along Burbank and Glendale Circle were completed this week, landscaping remains. The landscape crew worked on Spring Drive and Glendale and Burbank Cir. and miscellaneous right-of-way cutting. Miscellaneous asphalt patching was addressed this week. Pre bid meeting for the City Hall and Jail HVAC replacement is scheduled for 5/11/18. Detective Lanzing was selected as Officer of the Year by the Cobb County Bar Association for the great investigation in solving and arresting the suspects who were targeting firefighters personal cars that were parked at fire stations. We had our formal introduction of K9 Max at Belmont Hills Elementary School. We attended the Cobb County Prayer Breakfast, and also a lunch honoring volunteers for Belmont Hills Elementary School.
