Extinguishing Agents Suppression Systems Clean Agents - NFPA 2001 - Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems - Clean Agent, electrically non-conducting, non-volatile, or gaseous fire extinguishing agent that does not leave a residue upon evaporation Halocarbons (stored as liquid under nitrogen gas pressure) FM200 Inert Gas (stored as gas under pressure) e.g. Inergen Alternatives Water Mist (including hybrid systems with inert gas) Hypoxic (oxygen reduced atmosphere) Dry Pipe Sprinkler (double interlock) Carbon Dioxide (not included in NFPA 2001) FM200 Cylinder Suppression Systems Inert Gas IG55 Cylinder Bank 3
Hypoxic Atmosphere Control Systems Fire Alarm Control Panel and Aspirating Detector Unit Detection Systems Control Systems Point Type Ceiling mounted smoke or heat detectors Smoke detector minimum obscuration approx 0.5% to 1.0% Linear Wire Heat detector of continuous twisted pair cable Sacrificial (requires replacement after operation) Slow response (compared to smoke detectors) Aspirating Aspirating sampling systems with ceiling conduit (eg VESDA) Detector minimum obscuration approx 0.02% (local pre-alarm) Flame Ultra Violet and Infrared radiation detectors Field of vision only Optical (Beam Detectors) Open area smoke imaging detection Transmitter and receiver required CCTV Visual smoke sensing from CCTV camera images Limited functionality in darkness VESDA Aspirating Detector Unit 4

Building Regulations Warehousing Storage Methods Local legislation/codes/acts/standards may require the mandatory installation of fire sprinkler systems Building heights will vary Fire sprinkler design standards vary (ie NFPA, AS) (may be allowable under local regulations however) Longspan Racking with shelving Picking from work platform Wide aisles (fork truck) Auto Picker High bay racking with shelving Picking from automated picker Narrow aisles (auto picker on rails) Mezzanine Racking Catwalks with landings and stairs Manual picking Active file File retrieval Manual picking Normally ground level Fire Sprinklers in Warehouses Warehouse Storage Local regulations may require fire sprinklers Clients insurance requirements Alternative Building Solutions Storage Materials Archive cartons including - Paper documents - Data tapes Non-hazardous materials Fire Sprinklers Types Roof Level sprinklers - ESFR - CMSA - CMDA - High Hazard In rack face sprinklers In aisle sprinklers In rack flue sprinklers 6
Warehouse Fire Sprinkler Types Fire Engineers Adding Value ESFR Early Suppression Fast Response - Suppression mode sprinklers - 45 ft/13.7m maximum ceiling/roof height (usually) - In aisle sprinkler required with catwalks (FMDS 2-0) CMSA/CMDA/High Hazard Control Mode Sprinklers No maximum ceiling/building height Water delivery provided by both roof level and in-rack sprinklers Limited storage height without in-rack sprinklers Provision of Fire Engineered alternative solution at beginning of project to minimised delays in design delivery Provision of latest available fire protection services designs and innovations to complement function of racking design i.e. head type Provide critical racking design advice with regard to: Catwalk material specification Shelving material specifications Flue requirements Flue management Aisle widths Egress stair requirements Industry Developments Insurance Delivered Solution New Approved Sprinkler head allows 48ft/14.6m storage Not FM Approved though Testing undertaken to allow 55ft/16.7m storage in 60ft/18.25m building Test failed in October 2014 Roof Level sprinklers - Bigger K factor and flow rates required - Each sprinkler can deliver more than a fire hose!! Stymied by codes v s real world applications need minimum 10ft/3m aisles for >50ft/15.2m storage height Won t be applicable to catwalk type systems in the near future Integrated Racking/fire design is the key warehouses are simply weather covers! Some insurer s require storage clients to have fire sprinklers to be installed, regardless of local building code requirements. (i.e. FM) The option of non building code required fire sprinkler system installation may result in decreased client insurance premiums. 7
Client Benefits Thank You Full building solution - Building Code compliant, and - Storage Solution Criteria met Future proofing additional stages installation - Minimizing delays, i.e. each stage hits the ground running Confidence in future build costs Business continuity if a fire occurs (i.e. localised small loss compared to possible total loss) Increase Yield Revenue!
