UPDATE ON ESTATES AND FACILITIES PROJECTS APRIL 2017 Projects Completed within last 24 months 1. Richmond and Workshop Cladding ( 6.4M) A further phase of recladding has been completed to Richmond Building (North and East elevations) together with new cladding and roofing to the Workshop Block. 2. Professional Services Moves ( 509K) The refurbishment was to reconfigure offices for HR, Finance and Marketing. HR and Finance were relocated with D, E&F of Richmond Building through the creation of additional open plan office and flexible mixed use meeting rooms. The Marketing department was positioned within C Mezz area. 3. Faculty of Life Sciences Moves ( 650K) A new front of house facility for the Faculty of Life Sciences on C Floor has been completed in Richmond Building. The project included a distinctive zone at the heart of Richmond building for the faculty and student support services. 4. Team Based Learning 3 ( 380k) The project involved transforming an existing conference suite into a group based computer teaching facility. The existing area was completely stripped out and a new internal ramp, raised access floor and acoustic doors installed. High quality ceilings, carpets, doors and wall finishes were installed to create a high class teaching suite. 5. WC refurbishments ( 250k) As part of the ongoing improvements to welfare facilities across the site the refurbishment of WC s to Richmond Building, Heaton Mount and Chesham Buildings incorporated high grade finishes, with robust design suited for longevity and heavy use. 1
6. Enabling Works for the Health and Wellbeing Centre ( 1.33M) 7. Carlton Prayer Rooms ( 375K) Enabling works to relocate activities out of Phoenix South West building is practically complete, mainly taking place in Richmond Building on various floors and in the Workshop Block and Norcroft Building on a phased basis. The move is part of a wider programme of works to develop the Phoenix South West Building into the Health and Wellbeing Centre. Refurbishment of the site which housed the old Waterstones bookshop to provide a new faith centre and prayer facility. The project features modern social spaces, bespoke religious washing facilities and a large open prayer area utilising natural light. 8. Postgraduate Research Lounge ( 450K) Located in the old Jazzman s café/bar, the Postgraduate research lounge is a new space created exclusively for postgraduate research students. The space is naturally ventilated, features high levels of insulation and low energy lighting. 9. Faculty of Management and Law refurbishments ( 645K) 10. The Faculty of Management and Law campus has recently undergone various improvement works comprising of; the refurbishment and upgrade of Airedale Building teaching facilities. Redecoration of the historic Heaton Mount entrance and staircase. Building fabric improvement works to the Cartwright Building. Refurbishment & redecoration of Heaton Mount extension entrance lobby and corridor areas. 10. Teaching room refurbishments ( 100K) A further summer programme of GTA improvements was completed in N3, N4 and H33 Richmond Building plus redecoration of various teaching rooms, including John Stanley Bell Lecture Theatre. 2
11. Digital Health and Enterprise Zone Project ( 1M) The University has acquired a Bradford Council property in the Little Germany of Bradford and created a Digital Health and Enterprise Zone with strong links to the Health and Wellbeing Centre to be housed in the Phoenix South West Building. Practical Completion was achieved on 23 rd April 2016. 12. Richmond Workshop Block Laboratories ( 900k) The scope of works undertaken for the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics included the transformation of 1970 s accommodation into modern 21 st century fit for purpose flexible teaching laboratories WG 2/3, WG8/9 and adjacent corridor areas; including furniture and audio visual work. The refurbishment works were completed in October 2016. 13. Allied Health Professions & Sport Teaching Space - New physiotherapy teaching space ( 414k) Refurbishment of the former prayer room and cleaners store into new a new Physiotherapy teaching room and changing facility. Project included full refurbishment of existing areas with demolition, new wall, floor and ceiling finishes, installation of new AV system and new heating, lighting and ventilation system. The project also required the decant of equipment stored in the space and the relocation of the cleaners store to Chesham level 01 to enable to the main works to commence. The resulting refurbished space provides a modern, fit for purpose teaching space required for the School of Health. Project completed September 2016. 14. Laisteridge Lane Sports Changing Facilities/Pitches ( 1.8M) The works include the substantial refurbishment the Sports Pavilion and the replacement of the artificial football pitches and tennis courts which has attracted a Football Foundation Grant of 500k. The sports pitches were completed in September 2016; with the Pavilion works completed February 2017. 15. The Bradford Energy Quarter is a 1.9m HEFCE funded project introducing innovation and carbon management to create a smart grid delivery both heat and energy to JBPL, Student Central, Phoenix NE and Phoenix SW. Delivering financial savings of over 350k per annum the project will reduce our reliance on the national number of buildings and the electrical infrastructure upgraded to provide greater system resilience. 16. Richmond Combined Heating & Power Engine ( 875k) Forming part of part off grid strategy the externally funded installation of a 500kW CHP engine includes replacing and removal of plant original to the Richmond Building. The project is complete and outperforming the original business case and contributing to reduced running costs. The Richmond heating pumps replacement works were also undertaken during this period in the additional sum of 250k providing greater efficiency and control of energy usage. 17. Chesham C Building Re- roofing ( 330k) These essential improvement re-roofing works were completed February 2017 and include the replacement of the original glazed roof lights with insulated polycarbonate transparent roofing panels. The roof covering also includes additional insulation to further improve the thermal performance of the building and drive down utility costs. Projects currently on site; or to be undertaken during the next 12 month period 18. Health & Wellbeing Centre ( 7.36M) Project works to refurbish Phoenix Building South West Building to create the Health & Wellbeing Centre comprising of the Digital Health Enterprise Zone incubator facility and the Bradford School of Optometry and Visionary Science. The works are progressing on site with a planned completion of summer 2017. 19. Rolling Lift Replacement Strategy ( 250k per annum) Phase I works - Horton D and Richmond Building main lifts were completed December 2016. Phase II - Richmond Building goods lifts and JB Priestly Library due for commencement and completion summer/autumn 2017. The rolling programme is part of our wider Long Term Maintenance Strategy and will support the student experience with the improved travel through University Buildings. 20. 20. Centre for Applied Health Research (CAHR) A collaboration project between the University of Leeds, University of Bradford and the Bradford Royal Infirmary, the project is part funded by the Woolfson Trust. It consists of a 1000sq m building to be sited at the BRI. The project is currently early feasibility and is anticipated to be complete on mid-2018. 21. The Learning Hub A major new build new facility on city campus which will house the Faculty of management & law as well as the Faculty of Social Science. Currently subject to an option appraisal Long Term Maintenance Update During the next 12 months works to improve our infrastructure and support campus activities include the following:- (1) Upgrades to Richmond Heating Circuits (2) Installation of LED lighting across campus (3) New Legionella Monitoring Software (4) Installation of Roof Edge Protection (5) Improvements to car parking and footpath surfaces (6) New Energy Efficient External Lighting (7) Improved CCTV Provision (8) A further programmer of WC refurbishments (9) A further programmer of teaching room upgrade works. 5
