CABLE STORAGE & HANDLING Radix DuraLife TM FPL fire rated power cables are designed for durability. However, proper cable handling procedures must be followed to ensure the cable is not damaged prior to installation. Protect from Damage Choose a storage area that is cool, dry and protected from weather, construction activities, equipment collisions, falling objects, chemical spills, moving vehicles and other related hazards. Initial Inspection When cable reels are first received, inspect the protective reel wrap for evidence of shipment damage. Whenever possible, leave the Radix factory-applied protective cover in place until just before installation. Radix highly recommends the use of additional covering to protect cable reels when stored outdoors or in dirty, dust-prone areas. Use a cover that is resistant to moisture and shields cables from the sun. If possible, provide ventilation to avoid excessive heat in the storage area. Storage Procedure Store 1000 and 2000 reels on sides to avoid damaging reels. Store 5000 reels upright on flanges. Do not stack reels. Handle reels carefully to avoid physical damage to reel and cable. Store cables on a firm, dry surface or on planking in an area with good drainage. Arbor Hole Reel Flange Protective Reel Wrap Always store and transport reels as shown below. To avoid reel damage, do not stack. 1000 and 2000 Reels 3 Stored on Side 5000 Reel Packaging: Available on 1,000 ft., 2,000 ft. and 5,000 ft. reels. Smaller length reels may be available from Radix Wire distribution partners. 3 Stored Upright on Flange Radix highly recommends storing cable reels indoors or in a weather-protected enclosure. 4

CABLE STORAGE & HANDLING Moving Reels A Radix DuraLife TM cable reel, depending on gauge and reel size, weighs 60-400 pounds, so handle carefully by using equipment designed specifically for this task. Make sure the lifting/handling device does not come in direct contact with the cable or its protective covering. Take care to ensure that the flange of one reel does not impact cable on another reel. Do not drop reels from any height, especially from trucks or transport equipment. If any of these situations occur, immediately examine the DuraLife TM cable for damage. Recommended Reel Rolling Method It is a natural instinct to roll cable reels. However, Radix recommends only doing so for short distances over firm, level and dry surfaces. Roll reels in direction the cable is wound (see below) to keep the cable winding tight. Rolling in the wrong direction loosens the winding and may damage the cable or make it more difficult to deploy. Secure end of cable with tape or thread through flange hole and knot before rolling. Always roll reels at a slow speed to maintain control and prevent collisions with equipment, other reels or personnel. Recommended Lifting Methods Crane or boom-type equipment - Insert a suitably strong, properly secured shaft through the reel arbor hole and lift with slings. - Use a spreader or other device to minimize sling pressure against the reel flange. Forklift - Place fork tines so that lifting pressure is on both reel flanges, not the cable. Secure Loose Cable End with Tape Prior to Rolling Flange Hole Arbor Hole 5

PRE-INSTALLATION INSTALLATION Radix DuraLife TM FPL fire rated power cables must be installed in accordance with ALL requirements of the UL 2196 Electrical Circuit Protective System Listing, plus national and local codes. UL Electrical Circuit Integrity Systems (FHIT) Prior to installation, Radix highly recommends you visit www.ul.com and reference the Fire-Resistive and Circuit Integrity Cables section for the latest information and updates on UL Electrical Circuit Integrity Systems (FHIT). Checklist Check cable for presence of moisture or evidence of damage that may have occurred in storage. Take precautions if system routing comes in close proximity to abnormally high heat sources such as pipes. Long-term exposure to high heat could cause damage to cable jacket. Examine conduit supports prior to pulling cable to assure total system integrity. Inspect cable entry and exit points for any sharp, jagged edges which could damage cable jacket in pulling process. Authorities Having Jurisdiction should be consulted before installation. Radix recommends you follow the installation guidelines documented in the new NEC 2014 Article 728, Fire-Resistive Cable Systems. Article 728 covers the installation of fire-resistive cables, fire-resistive conductors and other system components used for survivability of critical circuits to ensure continued operation during a specified time under fire conditions as required in this Code. Wheatland EMT Tubing Installation Wheatland EMT support brackets must be installed no further apart than 72 in vertical orientation and 48 in horizontal orientation. These maximum support dimensions apply to all EMT tubing sizes. For complete overview of Wheatland EMT tubing installation, reference 2014 NEC Article 358 which covers Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) and all applicable Articles of the Code, as well as any listing, labeling or manufacturer s instructions. WEIGHT/1000 FT CABLE SIZE (LBS) 16 AWG Solid 2-Conductor 55.41 14 AWG 7-Strand Conductor 73.28 14 AWG Solid 2-Conductor 59.01 For installation of all other UL 2196 certified system components, consult each manufacturer s installation instructions. See page 2 for list of manufacturers. 6

INSTALLATION Cable Pulling Use Polywater J lubricant prior to pulling cables. Use a pulling rope which can handle the maximum allowable pulling tension on each cable pull without causing damage to the equipment or cables.
