The City of Solon Service Department Newsletter Dear Solon Resident: The City of Solon Service Department is con nually striving to improve the level of service we provide our residents. Throughout the years we take me to review the programs offered and formulate ways to improve and run them in the most efficient manner for the residents we serve. All of us here at the Service Department take pride in offering the highest level of service to our residents as well as programs that are on the cu ng edge to best serve our community. A er reviewing the Solid Waste & Recycling procedures and conduc ng a city wide survey, a me change was implemented for the placement of carts curbside to 7:00 AM in order to increase efficiency. 1060.08 PLACING CONTAINERS; REMOVAL. Authorized refuse and recycling receptacles shall be placed at the streetline on or before 7:00 a. m. on the day designated for collec on but not before 7:00 p. m. on the day prior to refuse collec on as designated by the Director of City Services. Residents can s ll take advantage of the opportunity to place their carts out at 7:00 PM the day before collec on if placement in the morning proves difficult at your home. This small change in the me for cart placement will help to improve the quality of service within the solid waste and recycling program. Thank you for your me. I have been employed at the Service Department for 21 years. Over the years, I have learned the many different aspects that make up the Service Department from both past and present employees. It has been an honor and privilege to work with this group of dedicated employees. Solid Waste and Recycle Cart Procedure: Solid waste and recycling is collected at curbside Tuesday through Friday according to an established route Primary Recyclables: What we recycle in carts (loose/comingled) Cans: Empty and rinse Cartons: Empty and Rinse replace cap on carton ( too small to be recycled by itself) Glass: Empty and rinse Paper Boxes: Flatten Cardboard items, like cereal boxes to save space *** Plastic Bottles & Jugs: Rinse and replace cap **Please break down boxes and put them in your recycling cart. If they do not fit bundle the flattened cardboard Please visit www.cuyahogarecycles.com and refer to the What Do I do With section for recycling questions and information The Solon Service Department is open between 7:30 and 3:00 to drop off any items Monday through Friday Brush and Yard Waste Collection In order to guarantee the safety and efficiency of our staff we ask residents to make sure their brush, tree trimmings, and other related debris disposal is left out for collection following these guidelines: Branches & limbs should be stacked in a pile as neatly as possible with cut ends facing the street. Piles should not be stacked over 4 high. Small amounts of brush should be bundled and tied for quick easy collection. All piles should be of manageable size for one worker to remove. Branches and limbs should not exceed 8 feet in length and should not be larger than 6 in diameter. We ask that the quantity of debris to be collected not require two of our staff member more than 15 minutes to collect. Any debris pile which exceeds 15 minutes to collect may be left and collected on the next brush collection rotation. Stumps (without dirt) and logs will be placed on a list and picked up by the non-chipper truck. This process ensures continued brush service throughout the city. Loose materials such as leaves, sticks and rakings should be placed in brown paper yard waste bags and should never be mixed with brush piles. Yard waste bags should only be placed out for collection by 7:00 AM on your regularly scheduled refuse collection day and no sooner than 7:00 PM the night prior to your collection day. SEE CODIFIED ORDINANCE 1060.08 (e) Any brush or branches containing thorns must be separated from regular brush or branches. Metals objects such as fencing, pipes and/or re-bar cannot be mixed with brush pile. This will cause serious injury to our employees and equipment. Any brush/tree debris that is generated by a contractor is the responsibility of said contractor. The contractor must remove the debris and haul it away at the end of the job. We will not pick up any contractor generated brush/tree debris.

When the FIRST MONDAY & the FIRST FRIDAY fall in the same week. (EXAMPLE BELOW) Items that are considered secondary recyclables include computers, auto batteries, propane cylinders, light metals such as license plates, small appliances, pots, pans, Household Hazardous Waste such as oil based paints & stains, pool chemicals, fertilizers, oil, anti freeze, fluorescent bulbs and fire extinguishers. Please be advised CFL lightbulbs are not collected by the City of Solon but can be taken to a Home Depot or Lowes. Do not mix these items with regular trash as this can cause serious injury to personnel & equipment. Latex paint is not hazardous as it is comprised mostly of water. To dispose of latex paint, solidify the remaining paint and place in your trash receptacles. Latex paint can be solidified by mixing equal amounts of an absorbent material and allowed to dry. Items such as cat litter, saw dust, plaster of Paris, oil dry or Vermiculite work well. Never throw liquid paint in the regular trash receptacle. It will be released from the can when trash is compacted and will seep out of a waste collection vehicle onto the streets Construction Debris Carpet: We allow a maximum of 10 rolls of carpet and padding cut into 4 foot sections rolled and bound for pick up. The Solon Service Department will collect approximately 2 cubic yards of construction debris that is generated by the home owner. These items include: Small amounts of drywall, cabinetry, dimensional lumber, plumbing fixtures, insulation, wood, doors and small amounts of roofing materials Lumber is required to be cut into 4 foot pieces and must be bundled. These bundles must not weight more than 50 Lbs. according to ordinance 1060.11 or they will not be collected by the solid waste crews. All loose debris must be contained and is subject to the 50 Lbs. weight limit per ordinance 1060.11. All nails must be removed or bent over to prevent injuries to our staff. The City of Solon s permit application clearly states that disposal of all debris generated from a permitted project is the responsibility of the contractor/ homeowner per ordinance 1060.12. We suggest the contractor/ homeowner contact a waste removal service and obtain a dumpster ex: Boyas Excavating (216/ 524-3620), Kurtz Bros. (216/ 986-7033), and Waste Management's Cuyahoga C&DD Landfill (440/ 498-5700 ). T.V. s & OTHER ELECTRONICS: www.bestbuy.com/recycling OIL BASED PAINT: Drop off at the Solon Service Center between 7:30-3:30 Mon-Fri. You may also set it out with your secondary recycling pick up. (see page 2 for information) COMPACT FLORESCENT BULBS (CFL): Bring them to Home Depot or Lowe s PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS: Giant Eagle, JCPenney, Kohls, Lowe's Home Improvement, Sam's Club, Target, and Walmart stores. TIRES: Conrad s Tire Express, Firestone Auto Care, and National Tire and Battery

Common Mistakes: 1. Carts blocked by obstructions or facing the wrong way- Carts shall be placed at least three feet from cars, mailboxes, utility poles or any other obstruction. Be sure the arrows on the lid of the cart are pointing towards the street and the cart is placed as close to the curb as possible so the truck can easily grab the cart for collection. 2. Rubbish and recycling out late Carts must be out before 7:00 AM on the days scheduled for collection, but not before 7 PM the day prior to collection. Upon emptying of the carts, the owners or renters of the property shall remove them from the street line and return them to their place of storage by 7:00 p.m. per ordinance 1060.08(e) 3. Incorrect Items in carts Recycling must be put in recycling cart and should be comingled loose with no bags. Solid Waste must be put in solid waste cart bagged, with no secondary items or HHW. 4. Bagged recycling or solid waste outside cart- Only carts provided by the City of Solon shall but used for both solid waste and recycling pick up. Unissued carts or black garbage bags are NOT permitted. Please contact us in advance for any special situations that may arise involving any extra solid waste or recycling. 5.
