Full Circle by Blythe Thimsen photos by Alan Bisson What goes around comes around; in fact, it sometimes comes full circle. Just ask Steve and Tresa Schmautz. Five years ago they purchased Cliff Aerie, the well-known historical home perched on a cliff high above downtown Spokane. When they moved into the home though, it was their second time living there. They came full circle back to the house. 80 SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 www.spokanecda.com

Built in 1941, by Senator Clarence Dill and his wife, Mabel Dill, Cliff Aerie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Dills were well known in the community. A local attorney in the early 1900s, Senator Dill also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1915 to 1919, and represented Washington State in the U.S. Senate from 1923 to 1935. (One of his greatest accomplishments was securing a promise from Franklin Delano Roosevelt - then the Governor of New York - to build the Grand Coulee Dam if he were elected president. Once elected, FDR fulfilled his promise to Dill, and construction on the Grand Coulee Dam began.) Dill s 82 SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 www.spokanecda.com

While most rooms in the house required only cosmetic changes to create the look Steve and Tresa wanted for their home, the kitchen received a full makeover, resulting in an updated and enviable kitchen in which the Schmautzes can cook and entertain. SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 83

3820 E. Dalke St. Spokane, WA 99217 (509) 482-7262 wife, Mabel, founded the home economics department at what is now Whitworth University. Fast-forward to the early 1980s, when Evan Armstrong, for whom Steve s mother worked, owned the home. Armstrong decided to move out of state to expand his business, and asked Steve s parents if they would house-sit his home for two years. While his parents were living in the house, Steve and Tresa moved back to Spokane from Boise, and temporarily moved into Cliff Aerie with them. It is a house that has always attracted attention. With six bedrooms and seven bathrooms tucked into six levels with seven different rooflines, the design of the house is unique. The garage, located underneath the entrance portico is a drivethrough, with an entrance on the west side and an exit on the east. Parked one in front of the other, the garage holds five cars. When they enter or exit the garage, cars are driven over a heated driveway, which reduces ice and snow build-up in the winter. While this is a popular feature many homeowners install in their homes nowadays, what is remarkable about this feature is that it was original when the home was built in 1941. There is an interesting history to the house as well. According to tales, FDR stayed at the house several times when he came to visit Dill. It was during the war, so it was top secret, so it makes the perfect story because it can t be proved or disproved, says Tresa. It was not just the unique features or the historic intrigue Steve and Tresa remembered from their first stint living in the grand home. They remember watching cars slowly drive by, filled with sightseers looking at the massive homes in the neighborhood. We were so poor that we didn t have any gas money to drive around and look at houses, says Tresa. No doubt the thought of owning a home in that neighborhood, much less Cliff Aerie itself, was a thought that never dared to enter their minds. Life brought them full circle, though. Five years ago, when their youngest child graduated from high school, the Schmautzes decided they were ready to move. They had already found land in Coeur d Alene on which to build when Tresa saw a listing for Cliff Aerie. I saw that it was for sale, and I conned Steve into Modern design meets Asian inspiration Finished Aluminum with Frosted Temper Glass Aluminum and glass combine to creat a sleek, contemporary look www.spokaneoverheaddoor.com SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 85

going to look at it, she says. We were more curious about our memories of it, and seeing it, than we were about buying it. Or so they thought. By the end of the day they had come full circle in regards to where they were going go to call home; they had purchased the house in which they once lived. buy it was an asking price that was more affordable than either of them imagined. With the price making it a realistic option, and their connection with the house rekindled, Steve and Tresa were hooked. We made an offer, bought it and then we went on vacation the next day, says Steve. The whirlwind purchase before their preplanned vacation left them whiplashed by the speed of it. The next day I thought oh, what did we do? says Tresa. With work to do upstairs, the Schmautzes moved into Cliff Aerie and lived on one of the lower levels while painting and remodeling the upper levels. With three bedrooms, a living space, two bathrooms and a full kitchen and eating area, the lower level was a home in and of itself. The upstairs transformation took a mere six months. Steve is the owner of SDS Realty Inc., Commercial Real Estate Services; immediately before they moved into Cliff Aerie, SDS completed renovation of the historic Legion Building in downtown Spokane. Going immediately from that project to working on the house, Steve had a team in place that was already accustomed to working together quickly and efficiently. Working at a fast clip they completed the project in just six months. We had all the people so it went really well, says Steve of the renovations and changes. The house is great, it is really sound. The only thing that was complicated was the electrical - you need an engineer for this house! With new owners came a new look, and to that end, the Schmautzes turned to Wendy Cossette, of Cossette Interior Design to make the home fit their own style. I didn t have any of these visions, it was all Wendy! says Tresa of the designs and beautiful touches found throughout much of the house. I just saw incredible potential, says Cossette of her reaction to seeing the iconic home for the first time. It had all the right pieces for something really cool. The volume and graciousness of spaces to play with and the unique architecture are amazing. I think it is still surprisingly modern, she says of the home s style. There are quirky things like gothic arches, and they did interesting things. What we did as a team to make it fit for Steve and Tresa was make it classic, timeless and warm. She says the Schmautzes are not formal people, but are relaxed, so the feel of the home needed to mimic that. After the hyper-speed renovation of the house, the pace didn t slow down for the Schmautzes. We moved upstairs, and our daughter got married here a week later, says Tresa. After the wedding though, it was finally time to settle into the house, which proved to not be the easiest transition. We actually wanted to go back downstairs, says Steve of their reaction when they finished and were finally able to move upstairs. We d say you go up, no, you go up. When we first moved up, we weren t comfortable and didn t see ourselves here long-term. We saw it as a project, says Tresa. They soon grew comfortable with the large spaces and historic grandeur, though, and learned to love the home they had created. Now they see themselves living here for a long while. For me, it s the view, says Steve of what he loves most about living in the house. Cliff Aerie was the name given by the Dills, and each homeowner since has kept it. Aerie means the nest of a bird, such as an eagle, built on a cliff or other high place; it also means a house or stronghold perched on a height. The meaning is not lost on anyone who visits this impressive home. The house is beautiful, but we love the location and the potential for the gardens, says Tresa, giving a clue to what one of her passions is. It is becoming a preoccupation, she adds of the garden, which is an area in which she and Steve have both taken on special projects, working to change what was once untouched land. That s the fun thing; when you have something that is so beautiful and you can make it even more beautiful. The beauty of the property is noticeable immediately upon entering the gates of Cliff Aerie. As the gates swing open, you enter a state of relaxation, fostered by the curving driveway, rolling hills of green lawn and the sound of gentle chirping offered up by the birds nested in the many surrounding trees and bushes. The grounds have the advantage of older foliage, giving a sense of permanency to the home that clings At Affordable Custom Cabinets we've been designing and building custom cabinetry for over a quarter of a century. to the side of the cliff. The muted hum of traffic from below wafts upward, and from the home s vantage point it seems you are on top of the world. The entry driveway winds down toward a portico hoisted on four large pillars. The home s original double wood doors with circular glass accent windows open off of this portico, creating a sense of elegance. On each side of the doorway are tall rounded windows with a large red circle of glass topping it off like a cherry topping an ice cream sundae. Once the doors swing open, they showcase what surely must be one of the grandest foyers of any home in Spokane. A massive open staircase with enormous width erupts from the middle of the foyer, while two overstuffed wing chairs sit in the corner by the original stained glass windows. If they can be pulled away from the stairs, your eyes will be drawn upward to a detailed ceiling which includes several layers of molding and trim, from which hangs an original light fixture. The walls in the foyer are painted a Tuscan gold and are capped with bronzed woodwork. The front hall was one of the greatest challenges, says Cossette. It needed to be unique and special. In order to get the look which graces it now, she enlarged a fabric print and had it stenciled onto the wall by artist by Elizabeth D. Bruce. Fading from deep color to a lighter almost ghostlike appearance, the stencil is often mistaken for being original to the home. Off of the foyer is a rounded guest bath that was extended to include what was once a cedar closet. That is one of my favorite rooms, say Cossette. It is old Hollywood glamour but still very earthy, like a garden. Hand painted wallpaper, mosaic tiled floors and mirrored furniture combine in a high-end look that makes the bathroom a sought-after destination for more than just the obvious reason. The stairs rise to an impressive mezzanine level which houses furniture that once belonged to Senator Dill. It has come full circle, back to its original home after time spent in a local office. A low balcony on the mezzanine opens out over the living room. From this perch you can look through to five arched win- SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 93

dows along the curved wall of the back of the house, out over the tops of pine trees, and onto the rooftops of downtown s tallest buildings. Across the mezzanine stand two narrow glass doors that open to a staircase leading upstairs. There is also a small side stairway through this door which was the original staircase used by the servants for Senator Dill. If you take this narrow staircase, it leads down into the main-floor kitchen. With a Viking convection oven, a six-burner range and black soapstone countertops that lend an air of elegance, this is one part of the home that has been structurally remodeled to be thoroughly modern. An exterior wall of glass windows leads out onto a covered deck that takes advantage of the home s incredible views. A landscaped walkway down to a stone patio with a hot tub that looks out over the city is accessible from here. Off of the kitchen is a butler s pantry through which the circular dining room may be reached. A portion of the dining room s round wall opens out onto a wrap around circular deck that encases the back half of the home, stretching from one side to the other. Five windows lining the exterior of the circular wall provide panoramic views for those lucky enough to be seated at the eight-person round dining room table sitting beneath a domed ceiling. According to Tresa, the center of the dining room floor had built-in machinery for what looked like a Lazy Susan, but the rest of the equipment was never found. The idea of a rotating dining room floor is fun to imagine, though. I love the rounded walls and the shape, you just don t get to see that every day, says Cossette of the room. Stepping down two steps from the dining room places you in the living room, which is illuminated by the five nearly floor-to-ceiling arch-topped windows, located on the curved back wall of the room. This curved wall gives the impression the room is a half circle. The drapery treatments were one of the trickier pieces for sure because of the curves, says Cossette. That is why we decided to go with the silk that blends with the paint. It keeps the eye moving. The living room furniture is clustered around the fireplace, which is located directly beneath the mezzanine balcony. SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 95

The master bedroom offers one of the best seats in the house, as the view looks over the tops of most trees on the property, and out onto the city. The domed living room ceiling creates the optical illusion that it goes up forever. On the other side of the living room is a second circular room, exactly the same size and shape as the dining room. Originally this was the music room for the house, but now it is used as a family room. The comfortable couches are ones Steve and Tresa like to sink into, whether to soak in the panoramic view out of the windowed wall, or to watch television. Back in the living room, you may exit to either side of the fireplace, walking up a sloped hallway to the front of the foyer. On the way, you will pass a small room tucked under the stairs, which was the phone booth for the home s first phone. The Armstrong kids were known to doodle and write on the walls while they were on the phone. The previous owners had papered the room, but when the Schmautzes pulled off the paper they found all of the doodles and graffiti from years back, telling the story of conversations that went on in that room. While the main floor and mezzanine level are for public, the uppermost level is where the private living quarters of the house are located. En route up the stairs located off of the side of the mezzanine, large wide wood handrails with circular 96 SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 www.spokanecda.com

Indiana 328-5544 caps provide a bit of flair on what is a fairly plain staircase for such an amazing home. If you need more excitement while traveling between levels, a ride on the original 1941 elevator should do the trick. Running from the basement to the rooftop, it is not for those who are claustrophobic, as the space is tight! Besides the kitchen, the one other main structural change the Schmautzes made to the home was removing a wall between two bedrooms upstairs and making the space one large master bedroom and bathroom. Located on the back of the house, the master bedroom takes advantage of stunning views, while keeping the rounded wall footprint of the house found in the living room and basement levels below it. Because the bedroom is on the third level, the views at this height are completely unobstructed by the trees on the property. Steve designed a rounded interior bedroom wall, behind which is the master bath and closet. The bathroom is a beautiful tiled room furnished in dark cherry furniture. A marble step leads up to the wood-encased tub. With huge picture windows near the tub, one can soak in the bubbles while soaking in the view. The bathroom has the original tile, with an intricate black and white woven pattern inlaid in the floor, and a matching tile alcove in the shower. Built above the circular music room one level below, the office has a rounded wall, with windows providing sweeping views to the east. This is Tresa s office. Like Mabel Dill, the original lady of the house, Tresa also works at Whitworth University. In addition to having a private practice in town as a therapist, she teaches in Whitworth s Psychology department. The home has come full circle, back into the ownership of a Whitworth faculty member. Though the views from the upstairs are impressive, nothing can compete with the view from the uppermost level of the home. A short climb up steep stairs leads to a small square room with windows on all four sides. The room - which is in the process of becoming a greenhouse has a similar feel to a control room on a ship, with windows and views on all sides. Stepping out onto the rooftop through a small door, allows you to walk around on the roof and take in a nearly 360 degree view. The view up there is like the house itself, and like the lives of Steve and Tresa; it has come full circle. 98 SPOKANE CDA LIVING / July - August 2009 www.spokanecda.com
