Sandvik dehydration systems for fruit and vegetables
Perforated steel belt Sandvik steel belt technology forms the basis for all our food drying systems and delivers a range of proven benefits: Hard and smooth surface Temperature resistant Corrosion resistant Easy to clean Endless weldable Wear resistant High thermal conductivity High tensile stress resistance Easy to repair High durability Perforated belts Round hole perforations with triangular pitches, as shown in the figure below, are standardized.the triangular base is parallel with the running direction of the belt. t t 0 d Belt direction Standard perforation patterns Five standard perforation patterns are available to satisfy most requirements. A broad range of other patterns, with a minimum hole diameter of 0. mm (0.03 in.) and different spacings, can be provided to suit specific applications. Surface finishes Sandvik has developed special techniques and equipment to provide continuous steel belts with surface finishes tailored to suit the product. A number of different finishes and treatments are available. Cold-rolled and different grades of ground finishes are available as standard. Polished, grooved, embossed, chrome-plated and tefloncoated surfaces can be supplied on request. Sandvik s unique perforated steel belt provides simpler offloading and cleaning than wire mesh or perforated apron belts and hence the highest possible levels of hygiene. Sandvik drying system proven technology for profitable dehydration Standard drying systems With the growing trend towards the use of dried fruit and vegetables in all kinds of packaged food there is an increasing need for a drying system that delivers high quality product at minimum cost. The Sandvik drying system developed in close collaboration with leading food research centers and universities in Italy is just such a system. Using the perforated Sandvik steel belt, this unique system can significantly reduce throughput times and bacteriological counts, in products as diverse as potatoes, carrots, apples, orange peel, celery, garlic, tomatoes, cabbages, onions, beetroots, cauliflowers, peppers, leeks, apricots and many more. The Sandvik system offers many other significant operational benefits: A specially developed air circulation technique and controlled throughput speeds reduce processing times by up to 0 % and often more. Multi stage drying units permit optimum time/temperature curves to be achieved with each product. Continuous drying on the Sandvik system enables products to be processed around the calendar. The Sandvik drying system operates at low energy levels, and can help to reduce labour costs significantly. 3
Sandvik drying systems: Specially developed for high performance drying of fruits and vegetables, all year round. Dryer sectional view 7 Improved product quality The Sandvik drying system achieves very high air velocity through the product on the perforated steel belt, resulting in processing times reduced by 0 %, and often more.this means that bacteriological counts are very low, and product quality is improved. Sectional view: 1 Perforated steel belt 2 Upper air chamber 3 Lower air chamber 4 Cleaning door Fan Heat exchanger 7 Exhaust air Belt return strand 2 1 4 3 Improved efficiency Whatever the product, the Sandvik drying system offers you the highest possible standard.the unique top to bottom air flow, the precise control of temperature gradients, and the simplicity of product removal from the flat surface of the steel belt, all contribute to improved efficiency. Improved hygiene The highest standards of hygiene are assured through the widespread use of stainless steel parts and the hard, flat and easy-to-clean surface of the Sandvik steel belt. A continuous washing device on the return strand of the belt and a C.I.P. device for sanitation of air ducts permit easy cleaning of the system. Improved performance A 1,00 mm wide perforated steel belt is used in the Sandvik drying system, enabling perfect transverse air distribution to be achieved, and thus uniform product moisture.the Sandvik drying system can be provided with one, two or three in-line drying stages, which in turn are built from 2. metre long sections.this means that it is possible to vary air temperature and exhaust air volume very precisely, and hence the moisture content in each section.the result: time/temperature curves at specific and optimum levels for each product. Improved process control The Sandvik drying system brings new levels of control, automation and quality to the processing of all kinds of fruit and vegetables. Sandvik engineers can work with you to design and engineer a package that fulfils specific requirements as cost effectively as possible, incorporating up and down stream equipment as needed, to improve total productivity. 4

Actual capacities may vary depending on the quality and variety of the raw product, the initial and final moisture of the product, the raw material preparation process, the size of the product and local climatic conditions. Average steam consumption of Sandvik dryers: 1.7 kg of steam per 1 kg of evaporated water (in full operation).
Sandvik drying systems in operation from feeding to discharge Special applications: Carrot mass Recovery and exploitation of carrot mass in Italy While production of carrot juice is an efficient and profitable process, more than half of the original carrot mass is left behind as waste material after pressing. In its raw form, the waste mass is an unstructured material with high moisture content and fermentation activity, and is often simply spread over local fields as a poor quality fertiliser. Sandvik has developed a method of dehydration which concentrates the useful components of carrot mass and makes them easier to extract.the basis of the process is an extrusion of the mass into a spaghetti form, creating a soft product layer through which process air can easily flow. Intermediate belt conveyor between two drying stages Once extruded into spaghetti, the carrot mass is fed onto the dryer; the vibrating table ensures an even thickness and the dryer evaporates about 1,0 of water.the final product takes the form of pellets for ease of handling, transport and subsequent reprocessing. The Sandvik dryer is able to process 2,000 of carrot mass with an average moisture content of % (exactly as predicted by the initial feasibility tests) and the final orange-coloured pellets have a moisture content of about 10 %. Drying system for sensitive products This type of dryer has been specially designed for drying of sensitive products such as cut strawberries; and for handling a wide range of other fruits and vegetables, including partially frozen products. Delivering an end product with a highly uniform moisture content, this system can also be used as a pre-dryer for microwave plants. 4 2 1 3 7 1 Perforated belt 2 Upper air chamber 3 Lower air chamber 4 Fan Heat exchanger Exhaust air 7 Belt return strand The dryer itself consists of several modules that can be combined to meet the required capacity of the plant.the highest standards of hygiene are ensured through a combination of stainless steel structure and components, a perforated stainless steel belt, belt washing devices and system accessibility that allows easy cleaning. Our expertise and experience in the design of this type of system enables us to fulfil virtually any requirement in terms of control, automation and quality of the drying process, ensuring efficient and cost effective processing of sensitive products.
