GENERAL PROCEDURES Key emergency personnel are asked to report to campus. UC Merced Emergency personnel must contact Safety coordinator, PI or Lab manager. Decisions made during a crisis will vary depending on the nature of the event.
What you can do in any emergency Keep your Cat Card with you at all times Be familiar and review emergency plans at least once a semester Comply quickly and calmly with instructions Provide emergency contact information to those who would need it Keep the gas tank full if you have a car Store a personal emergency kit in your desk or car Report valuable information to the UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) Avoid passing on unsubstantiated information and rumors Telephone Davila lab members to relay important emergency information

Types of Possible Emergencies Gas escape Power outage Fire, smoke or explosion Earthquake General medical problems Flood / water leak Active shooter Biological spill Chemical exposure Toxicology
Emergency What to do What NOT to do Gas escape Stay calm Evacuate the immediate area as appropriate but do not sound the fire alarm Inform Safety coordinator, PI or Lab manager Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) Don t turn electrical switches on or off Don t smoke Don t use naked flames Emergency What to do What NOT to do Power outage Stay calm Safely stop your work Unplug computers, monitors and TV Call CAT-COPS (228-2677) and describe the situation Don t turn on electronic devices before getting authorization from EH&S or PI
Emergency What to do What NOT to do Stay calm Carefully touch every closed door. Do not open them if they are hot Fire, Smoke or Explosion Leave immediate fire area and close doors behind you Use the stairwells to evacuate the building Move away from fire and smoke Sound the alarm For all other assume there is a fire when alarm sounds Don t attempt to extinguish the fire Don t use elevators during the emergency Don t return to the building until directed to do so by PI
Emergency Fire, Smoke or Explosion What to do Continue evacuation and warn others who may attempt to enter the building Proceed to meeting area. See building evacuation meeting place map Account for all Davila Lab personnel Leave walks and driveways open for arriving fire fighters Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) Notify fire fighters on the scene if you suspect someone may be trapped inside the building
Emergency What to do if you are trapped during the fire What to do Wet and place cloth material around and under the door to prevent smoke from entering Close all doors possible between you and the fire Be prepared to signal someone outside, but do not break glass unless absolutely necessary as smoke may be drawn into the suite Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) and describe the situation Drop to the floor and crawl toward an exit If you are caught in smoke Stay as low as possible Take shallow breaths through your nose and cover your nose with a towel as a filter
Emergency What to do What NOT to do Earthquake Inside the Building Place yourself under the nearest sturdy object and hold onto it until the shaking stops and if possible cover your head and neck If you stand in a doorway, brace yourself against the frame and watch out for a swinging door or other people Avoid windows, filing cabinets, bookcases, and other heavy objects that could fall or shatter After the shaking stops leave the building using stairway
Emergency What to do Move away from trees, signs, buildings, and electrical poles and wires Earthquake Outside the Building Protect your head with your arms from falling bricks, glass, plaster, and other debris Move away from fire and smoke Proceed to the Building Evacuation Meeting Place if safe Let Safety coordinator, PI or Lab manager know that you are all right Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) Stay alert for after-shocks
Emergency What to do What NOT to do General Medical Problems Drowning, Heart attack, Heat stroke, Sexual assault/assault In the event an Lab member or student has a medical problem or injury, try to determine the extent of the problem. If an ambulance is needed, first call (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) and report the situation and location Be prepared to report the nature and location of the emergency, the number of victims and apparent condition of the victim If the situation is life threatening, proceed as follows: Assess and ensure scene safety Assist the victim according to their needs and your capabilities First aid kits are located in the laboratory Don t endanger your life to help another! It only makes things worse
Emergency What to do What NOT to do Flood or water leak All electrical equipment should be unplugged Unplug computer and computer-related equipment (Power surges and outages such as those expected will render computer equipment useless and can damage disk drives and memory boards.) When moving through wet or flooded areas use caution to avoid slipping Call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) Never disregard an official evacuation advisory If you are advised to evacuate, do so immediately Your safety is more important than protection of property or possessions
Emergency What to do Place as much distance between yourself and the threat. If able to, move away from the sound of gunfire as fast as possible Move with the flow of evacuating personnel Active Shooter If inside a building, move to another building If outside, move to the interior of a nearby building If you cannot flee the area, secure yourself in a room that you can maintain control of. Attempt to hide yourself from observation and remain quiet If able to without compromising your location to the threat, use a phone to call UC Merced Police Department at (209) 228-2677 (CAT COPS) and report your location Remain in this location unless you are confident you can flee from the location of the threat Comply with all orders from police

NANOMATERIALS SAFETY PLAN
Types of Nonmaterial (EPA) Carbon tubes and fullerenes: Composites for use in vehicles and sports equipment. Cerium oxide: Drug delivery to automobile catalytic converters. Titanium dioxide: Sunscreens, cosmetics, and paints and coatings. Silver: Textiles and other materials to eliminate bacteria and odor from clothing, food packaging, and other items where antimicrobial properties are desirable Iron: smart fluids for uses such as optics polishing and as betterabsorbed iron nutrient supplement, one of its more-prominent current uses is to remove contamination from groundwater
