Ventilation Heat Recovery PoolPak International Maintaining Your Climate for Indoor Pools and Waterparks Complete Ventilation, Heat Recovery and Dehumidification Packaged System by PoolPak International P o o l P a k I n t e r n a t i o n a l

Bringing the Outside In Today s pools have evolved into something greater than just a place for casual recreation. The advent of waterparks, filled with water features such as slides, dump buckets, and lazy rivers, entertain swimmers year round. But unlike facilities in warmer, tropical climates, pool owners in less temperate regions need to enclose their waterparks to extend their shorter summer season. Indoor pools have unique HVAC challenges not present in standard building construction. The facility is constantly subjected to evaporation and condensation cycles of corrosive pool water effecting occupant comfort and structural integrity of the facility. Ventilation standards require high amounts of outside delivered to the space for health concerns, and the space temperature and humidity must be maintained for an enjoyable experience. 2

The traditional approach to indoor pool space and air management utilizes both mechanical dehumidification and ventilation to maintain precise setpoint conditions. However, newer and more sophisticated control system technology is now able to better utilize outside air for dehumidification without dramatically sacrificing occupant comfort, offsetting the need for mechanical dehumidification. Open Versus Enclosed Facility Enclosed waterpark facilities like their open-air counterparts have the same objective of providing acceptable year-round conditions to maximize facility use. Open waterparks in warmer climates rely on natural conditions to provide a favorable environment most of the year. The higher summertime temperatures and humidity remain acceptable while the swimmers are active and wet. On occasional colder days, the pool is usually left for only the brave at heart. In geographic areas having shorter summer seasons, waterpark facilities must be enclosed for use year round. These facilities may use natural ventilation assisted by mechanical ventilation to minimize temperature and humidity during hotter summer months. 3

The New ClimatePak - Dehumidification Through Ventilation There are several proven approaches to indoor pool dehumidification with 100% ventilation being an economical method for large waterpark facilities. PoolPak International is introducing the ClimatePak, another proven approach to solving indoor air quality problems in waterparks and large natatoriums. The ClimatePak differs from traditional dehumidification systems by utilizing outside air to remove moisture rather than mechanical refrigeration. It takes advantage of the naturally dry outdoor air to control humidity and ventilate the facility while reducing the cost of operation. Integrated Packaged Solution The ClimatePak is not simply an air handler but a packaged solution designed specifically to manage indoor pool air quality. Everything about the unit is engineered to work in concert, eliminating the guesswork associated with management of your indoor poolroom environment. The Proven Approach is Your Best Assurance Total Satisfaction The PoolPak Proven Approach is the culmination of 25 years of solid experience in indoor pool dehumidification. The entire PoolPak dehumidification product line is designed specifically for one reason and one reason only to provide you with the best, long-lasting solution for your facility. Designed Specifically for the Corrosive Pool Environment Unlike standard air handlers and conventional dehumidification equipment designed for the commercial market, the ClimatePak is built to the same corrosion-resistant standards found in the other PoolPak product lines. Properly applied and maintained PoolPak equipment lasts longer for a better return on your investment. Energy-Efficient Operation ClimatePak utilizes a passive corrosion resistant heat pipe and bypass damper heat recovery system that recovers up to 60% of the waste heat from the exhaust air. Integrated control technology precisely manages internal conditions for maximum benefit at the lowest operating cost. Maximizing Performance with Proven Approach Control Technology A fully integrated packaged microprocessor based control system complete with application-specific software and processgrade sensors measures airflow, temperature and humidity and controls the key components. Standard PoolPak features such as variable frequency drives and efficient air foil fans offer superior performance. Lower Maintenance Reduces Downtime The ClimatePak design utilizes dry outside air in place of compressors. This eliminates the need for periodic refrigeration maintenance of a refrigeration system. Standard PoolPak features such as major electrical components being out of the air stream provide access to critical components for fast routine service. 4

Extending the Season All geographic locations experience higher temperature and humidity conditions during peak summer periods, but the length of these periods will be dramatically different between, for example, Florida and Maine. An enclosed indoor pool facility will maintain open air conditions with little effect on usability during these short hot and humid periods while maintaining comfortable conditions the balance of the year. During colder months, both the pool water and space temperature must be heated to comfortable levels. The heated pool water, warm air and water agitation escalates the evaporation rate filling the space to an uncomfortably high humidity level. To control these humidity levels, dryer outside air can be introduced to the space, lowering humidity to a more comfortable level. Auxiliary heating is used to temper the supply air and maintain a comfortable temperature as the building conditions require. ClimatePak controls the complex relationship between temperature and humidity, maintaining comfortable space conditions. Controlling Indoor Humidity with Outside Air To control indoor humidity, minimum amounts of drier outside air are metered through the ClimatePak to maintain an acceptable comfort band. As outdoor humidity increases, the amount of outside air through the ClimatePak increases to offset the humidity within the facility. Dilution of the indoor air is further supplemented using auxiliary exhaust fans and/or windows for natural ventilation as required. When the indoor temperature increases beyond maximum desired temperature, natural ventilation is used to supplement temperature reduction. An optional cooling coil can be introduced to reduce space temperature and extend the range of acceptable space temperature. Modes of Operation Dehumidification Mode SITUATION Outside air is cooler than the interior space and dry enough to provide proper dehumidification with auxiliary heating as required. CLIMATEPAK ACTIONS 1. Poolroom air is returned to the unit where some (or all) is exhausted as dictated by the conditions. 2. Exhaust air is blown through the heat recovery coil /damper system, capturing a significant portion of the exhaust air heat. 3. Dry, cold outside air and facility exhaust air conditions are continuously sampled by the control system, determining the exact amount of outside air to be introduced. 4. Outside and exhaust air are drawn through the passive heat recovery coil damper system to precondition make-up outside air. 5. ClimatePak reduces outside air until it reaches a minimum quantity as prescribed in ASHRAE Standard 62.1. 6. Conditioned outside air is mixed with the facility return air before it is filtered and heated to the proper air temperature and supplied to the space. Dehumidification with Auxiliary Cooling Mode SITUATION Outside air is warmer than the interior space but is dry enough to provide partial dehumidification. CLIMATEPAK ACTIONS 1. Air from the poolroom is returned to the unit where part of it is exhausted. 2. A significant portion of the exhaust air stream is blown through the heat recovery coil / damper system with no heat transferred to the outside air stream. 3. The outside air is warmer than desired and so an auxiliary cooling coil can be provided to temper the supply air to a lower air temperature while provided some dehumidification. 4. The supply air is then distributed through the facility ductwork. 6

Ventilation (Summer) Mode SITUATION The outside air supplied through the ClimatePak is warmer and more humid than the interior space and cannot provide dehumidification or cooling at the current airflow. CLIMATEPAK ACTIONS 1. Air from the poolroom is returned to the unit where 100% is exhausted. 2. The exhaust air stream is blown through the heat recovery coil / damper system with no heat transferred to the outside air stream. 3. The supply draws and filters 100% outside air for distribution through the facility. 4. Natural ventilation through operable skylights, doors, windows and external exhaust fans augments the air supplied and exhaust by the ClimatePak providing a supplementary dehumidification and space temperature control. Unoccupied Mode SITUATION When dehumidification requirements are lower in the space, the fan speed can be reduced to conserve electrical energy. CLIMATEPAK ACTIONS 1. The control system is instructed to switch to Energy Saver Mode during unoccupied periods or in situations where design conditions have been satisfied, and there is an opportunity to reduce supply air flow. 2. With the exception of reduced air flow, the ClimatePak operates in the standard dehumidification mode. 7
