Pushed into densely tropical hillside foliage connected to the mountainside this private beach house is located in a breathtakingly beautiful setting on the outskirts of the town of Paraty, on the lovely Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro. The lower of the two sections is open faced to the beach directly in front of the house, whilst the upper section connects, at its rear with the jungle landscape behind. These two blocks of Paraty house are almost abreast of the beach, anchored to the mountain with an 8-meters cantilever. The house, which hides structural qualities worthy of a far more detailed and in-depth study, has found the right balance with the topography of the landscape in which it sits. 46 47
An ipe-wood deck leads seamlessly to an infinity pool and into the beach beyond. The only way to access the island is by boat, once ashore and stepping out onto the sandy beach, a metallic bridge positioned over a crystal-lined reflecting pool leads to a set of stairs connected to the lower section. This area contains the kitchen and living area, with the first of the two extensive open spaces exposing guests to fully open 27-meter span views out towards the sea. The same entrance stairs lead to the upper block which is comprised of the bedrooms as well as a series of small mountain facing intimate terraces with zenital lighting and exposed concrete facing towards the mountainside. In contrast to the openness of the lower box, this upper section is framed with retractable eucalyptus branches to shade the bedrooms from the strong tropical sun. 48 49

and admire. Its elegance comes from the seamless link between indoors and out, from the use of native wood, stone and vegetation, and from the minimalist, sweeping vistas that make so many of Marco s designs appear as if they were either taking off or recently landed. The disconnect between theses indoor and outside spaces have been designed and constructed to perfection, allowing a seamless stream of light and ocean breeze to flow effortlessly throughout the entire house. This coupled with the wonderful location and o attention to details makes Paraty House a firm Cocotraie favorite.
