AFFF or AR-AFFF? That is the question. Viking has the answer! by Martin Workman Flammable and combustible liquids are broken into different classes by NFPA 30 based on flash points and boiling points. Typical designations from NFPA 30 are Classes IB and IC (flammable liquids) and Classes II, IIIA, and IIIB (combustible liquids). These designations provide direction for allowable storage arrangements and requirements for the prescriptive protection. There is a second designation that is important when utilizing a low expansion foam system to protect these liquids, where their ability to mix with water must be considered. When a liquid will mix with water, the standard terminology is "soluble." Another word used to indicate the ability to mix with water is "miscible," or the liquid may be called out as a "solvent" or "polar solvent." Hydrocarbons (fossil fuel derivatives) are non-miscible or not soluble, meaning they will not mix with water. Knowing whether a liquid is soluble is important in a low expansion foam system because it indicates what type of low expansion foam can be utilized in the protection of the hazard. When a liquid is non-miscible or not soluble in water, a standard Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) foam concentrate can be utilized. Where a mixture of non-miscible and miscible storage exists, or where a miscible product is the only product being protected, an Alcohol Resistant Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AR-AFFF) must be used. Standard AFFF concentrates work well on hydrocarbons, but because they will mix with flammable or combustible liquids that are miscible, they will have little or no affect on this type of fuel. AR-AFFF concentrates will, however, be effective on both hydrocarbons and miscible liquids as they form a protective polymeric layer between the fuel and foam blanket, which allows the foam blanket to float on the fuel surface. The polymeric layer drains from the foam blanket, which seals the liquid surface. AR-AFFF foam concentrates may also be known as: ARC's (alcohol resistant concentrates) ATC's (alcohol type concentrates) Universal (used on either hydrocarbons/non-miscible or polar solvents/miscible) 1x3's (1% concentration on hydrocarbons and 3% concentration on polar solvents) 3x3's (3% concentration on both hydrocarbons and polar solvents) 3x6's (3% concentration on hydrocarbons and 6% concentration on polar solvents) Alcohol-type foam As noted above, AR-AFFF concentrates may be used in different percentages depending on the type of flammable or combustible liquid being protected. Therefore, it is especially important to know what is being protected in order to provide the correct foam concentration to provide proper extinguishment required for the hazard. Because AR-AFFF concentrates may be used on both miscible and non-miscible hazards, it would be logical to use this type of concentrate on any foam job that arises. However, a 3% AR-AFFF costs at least twice as much as a 3% AFFF, so from an economic point of view, it is preferable to use an AFFF when protecting a hydrocarbon or any other non-miscible hazard. You can determine if a product is miscible or non-miscible by obtaining a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product. The MSDS will indicate if the product is soluble or will mix with water. If an MSDS is not available, knowing the chemical name can be a leading indicator of whether it is soluble or not. NFPA 49, provides fire protection methods for most flammable and combustible liquids and will indicate if an Alcohol Resistant foam concentrate is required. For more information on the miscibility of a liquid or additional questions on foam products, contact The Viking Corporation at 877-3VIKING (877-384-5464) and ask for Deb Baker or Martin Workman. New Residential Sprinklers Included in this mailing is a listing of all current residential sprinklers offered by Viking, including the new 4.3 K-factor residential horizontal sidewall, VK448. We are in the process of releasing several new sprinklers that are not shown in this listing, including a new 5.2 K-factor residential pendent that is scheduled to be available to the field the end of February 2003. This new frame-style, residential pendent sprinkler part number 12166 (VK436), is UL and cul listed for smooth, flat, horizontal ceilings at the lowest possible flows in 18' x 18' and 20' x 20' spacings, allowing the user to minimize friction pressure losses while providing the best starting pressures available! Room Size (ft.) Flow Pressure 12 x 12 14 7.2 14 x 14 14 7.2 16 x 16 14 7.2 18 x 18 17 10.7 20 x 20 20 14.8 VK436 can be used in surface-mounted or recessed installations and is available in 155 F/68 C and 175 F/79 C temperatures in all of our standard finishes. As always, data pages for new products are available on the Viking web site (www.vikingcorp.com). And, for your convenience, an updated listing of our residential sprinkler offering will be posted to the main page of the web site as a quick and easy reference. Check out the link entitled, "Residential Sprinkler Quick Reference Guide," for the latest information on our residential line. Star Pipe Products Short-Pattern Grooved Fittings Star Short-Pattern Grooved fittings are now available from Viking SupplyNet. These fittings are rated at 300 lbs working pressure and are being stocked, in addition to the standard product, throughout the country for your convenience. Please contact your VSN salesperson for pricing. Pre-Lubed Couplings Viking SupplyNet is in the process of introducing Star Couplings with pre-lubed gaskets. As the inventory of couplings with nonlubed gaskets is depleted, this new product will be shipped. A green identifying mark has been added to the pre-lubed product for easy identification in the field. Discontinued Items Silhouette Replacement Covers No Longer Available The Model A-1 Silhouette Concealed replacement covers are no longer available. When replacing these sprinklers, it may be necessary to adjust the length of the drops and/or utilize the new large concealed mirage cover plate, depending on the installation. 135 F/57 C Sprinklers to be Discontinued Viking will no longer manufacture sprinklers in 135 F/57 C where a 155 F/68 C equivalent listing exists. Where the use of a 135 F/57 C element provides unique listings, the products will continue to be manufactured. Because both sprinklers are in the "ordinary temperature" range and installations using the lower temperature are uncommon, we have opted to manufacture only the 155 F/68 C temperature, when possible. This change is included in the new Viking price list dated February 2003. This change affects all sprinklers, including standard and quick response, extra large orifice, intermediate response, dry sprinklers and spray nozzles. We do have some stock remaining, but once these are sold, we will no longer carry them. This does not apply to concealed cover plates. Page 3

Protective Clips Perhaps you've already noticed the protective clips being assembled on all dry and ELO sprinklers. We started manufacturing these in September and are in the process of adding this protection to several other sprinklers as well. This protection is designed to keep the products safe during the shipping and installation process, and provide added protection from "other" trades working around sprinklers. Underwriters Laboratories has made it mandatory by March 2004 for all sprinkler manufacturers to provide protection for all glass bulb sprinklers that stay with the product from manufacture through installation. Viking is taking a proactive approach to comply early and expect to have all sprinklers protected by the 3rd quarter 2003. Ask the Tech Rep... Question: What purpose does the Model A-1 Float Check serve in the Viking Dry Pipe valve trim, and is it a necessity? Answer: The Model A-1 Float Check is indicated in the trim of the Viking Dry Pipe Valve when using a Model E-1 Accelerator and a Model B-1 Anti- Flood device, and is included in the standard trim package. It contains a plastic ball inside the float check that allows air pressure to pass around it and up to the accelerator, in order for the accelerator to set up properly. When the dry pipe valve operates, system water runs through the valve trim and into the float check valve, where the plastic ball floats up with the water level and seals off the water at the ball seat. This prevents flooding of the accelerator. The Float Check must be installed with the trim as indicated on the Technical Data Pages, and in the proper orientation, in order for the trim to be UL Listed and FM Approved. Question: What are the differences between double interlock Electric/Pneumatic and Electric/Pneu-lectric preaction systems? Answer: Both systems are typically utilized when it is desired to keep water out of the system piping until both the detection system and the sprinklers are activated. Some typical applications would be coolers/freezers, ovens, etc. where accidental introduction of water into the piping can have severe consequences. The systems achieve the desired results in slightly different ways as described below: The Double Interlock Electric/Pneumatic Preaction System uses a solenoid valve and a pneumatic actuator in series on the release trim. In a fire situation, Detectors cause the release control panel to energize the normally-closed solenoid open, while air pressure in the sprinkler piping holds the pneumatic actuator closed preventing water from entering the system, Sprinklers open releasing air pressure from the system piping, The pneumatic actuator opens releasing water pressure from the priming chamber, The clapper opens and water flows to any open sprinklers. This type of system combines electrical and mechanical devices in releasing the system. Some advantages over the Electric/Pneu-lectric System include: Minimizing use of detection zones to open release devices, allowing their use for other detection options such as multiple detection loops. Reduces dependence on electricity, although they are still dependent on adequate air pressure. The Double Interlock Electric/Pneu-lectric Preaction System operates in a similar matter but it uses only a normally-closed solenoid, without the pneumatic actuator. In a fire situation: Detectors send a signal to the first zone of a release control panel that is cross-zoned, Sprinklers open releasing air pressure from the system piping that is monitored with a low air pressure switch, The low air pressure switch sends a signal to the second zone of the release control panel, The normally-closed solenoid is energized releasing water pressure from the priming chamber, The clapper opens and water flows to any open sprinklers. Some advantages over the Electric/Pneumatic System include: Pneumatic actuators require 30 psi air pressure in the system. Lower air pressures, consistent with the air pressure switch requirements, can be used with Electric/Pneu-lectric systems. One less device is needed on the valve trim.
