Agricultural University of Iceland was founded in 2005 by merging the following institutions Agricultural College, Hvanneyri, established 1947 on the former Agricultural School from 1889 Agricultural Reseach Institute, Reykjavik, established 1965 after a merger of several research bodies Horticultural College, Reykir, established 1939

AUI hosts UNU-LRT Land Restoration Training Programme The United Nations University Land Restoration Training programme (UNU-LRT) is a programme on restoration of degraded land and sustainable land management, aiming at assisting developing countries in capacity development within this field. The programme is a cooperation between the United Nations University, the Government of Iceland, the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland, and the Agricultural University of Iceland.
