Struck with its own disaster more than a century ago, the city's fire department battled one of the worst blazes in history and, as a result of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the city has made innovative firefighting a top priority ever since. In fact, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) is credited with pioneering some of the industry's most significant equipment, including the collapsible fire escape, the hydrant, the snorkel truck, the fire pole and even that familar "Chicago" helmet. That commitment to innovation along with top-notch personnel and equipment still defines today's CFD and is what continues to keep the city safe. For gas detection and hazmat operations, Chicago Fire has made Industrial Scientific its monitor of choice. The department has been routinely adding a mix of ATX612s A Chicago Firefighter uses an ATX612 to check for a suspected gas leak near Lake and State Streets after two police officers and a traffic aide had complained of feeling dizzy and nauseated while working in the area. and LTX312s to provide enhanced protection for the wide variety of fuel, gas, odor, and hazmat incidents it is often called upon to investigate. Chief Robert Anthony, Coordinator of CFD's Breathing Apparatus section, said the choice was simple. "We evaluated the Industrial Scientific monitors along with several other brands of equipment," Chief Anthony noted. "We simply let the group choose the equipment they wanted to use. The Industrial Scientific monitors rated highly, because in addition to being easier to use, calibrate, and maintain," the Chief said, "they just held up better." The CFD now uses the ATX612s on its entire hazmat fleet, which includes a main response vehicle, four heavy squad vehicles and eight team trucks. The ATXs provide the hazmat teams with the ability to monitor for multiple gas hazards with the added benefit of an internal pump for remote sampling. In addition, Chicago Fire has installed LTX312 multi-gas monitors on its other fifty-one support trucks. Chief Anthony explained that the multi-gas LTX312s give each truck greater response capabilities. "Previously, each truck was equipped with see Chicago next page City of Montréal and Canada's HydroQuébec Prepare to Dock Since its release little more than two years ago, the Docking Station TM has quickly become a keystone for safety departments in hundreds of companies. Big and small businesses alike, including oil and petrochemical refineries, pulp and paper mills, and even small contracting firms have been utilizing the DS1000 Docking Station to reduce costs and streamline their operations. Recently, utilities and municipalities have been discovering the DS1000 to be an ideal tool for managing the many see Canada next page The city of Montréal uses the Docking Station to reduce costs and to provide consistent and regular calibration for its municipal applications.

Two such Canadian organizations, HydroQuébec and the city of Montréal, have each installed DS1000s to manage the gas detection equipment used in their wide ranging applications. The city of Montréal saw the Docking Station in action at a regional safety show in Québec and instantly recognized the benefits such a system could offer to its confined space operations. After a brief evaluation period, the city's safety manager, Martin Buteau, decided to standardize their program on Industrial Scientific ATX612s and the DS1000. "The monitors were more durable and much easier to maintain than the competitive units we previously used," Buteau said, noting that they had to keep twice as many of the competitive monitors in their fleet to fill in for ones that had to be sent out for routine service. He added that, "with the Docking Station, we have consistent calibration in less time, can easily track and follow up on maintenance to better protect workers, and automatically handle record-keeping requirements, which are strictly enforced by the city." Montréal is planning to network its DS1000 in the near future while adding ATX620s to its manhole, sewer and other confined space applications. For Québec's chief energy producer, see Canada next page Chicago from previous page only a single gas carbon monoxide monitor," the Chief said. "Now, in addition to home CO calls, our front line trucks can safely respond to combustible gas leaks and, if needed, can provide additional support for larger hazmat incidents." Chicago Fire's main concern is the safety of its personnel. Chief Anthony says he's proud to be able to provide the best tools available for his team and notes that Chicago is one of only a few big city fire companies that have multi-gas monitors for each of its vehi- cles. "We are also very aggressive when it comes to calibration," he said, "to ensure safety, our equipment is consistently calibrated every month." And recently, the Chicago Fire Department added a new Docking Station to their instrument fleet to automate their calibration and recordkeeping functions. It was a logical step, Chief Anthony explained, since they own so many of the ATX612 monitors. It's another example of CFD's continuing commitment to be the vanguard of innovative firefighting. 2002 Trade Show Schedule 2002 PLANNED EVENTS April 11-13 Fire Dept. HydroQuébec, the decision to move to the Docking Station was an obvious one. In fact, the hydro electric utility added three of the systems to handle its growing fleet of TMX412s. For years, the TMX units have been the energy provider's principal choice for underground applications because of the monitor's compact size, durability and optional french reading display. HydroQuébec's safety manager, Lucie Mainville, says she is also pleased with how easy the monitors are to maintain, allowing them to perform basic sensor replacements and calibration internally to minimize their instrument downtime. "The Docking Station has made all of that even easier," she noted. HydroQuébec installed its first Docking Station in its St. Bruno facility about 18 months ago and has since placed two more systems in its St. Hyacinthe and Sherbrooke sites. The company has networked the systems together to access and review data from any location. "It does everything we could ask for," Mainville said of the DS1000, adding that they have been able to standardize procedures (ISO9001), monitor instrument inventory, store data and reduce costs. HydroQuébec runs the rest of its operations just as efficiently to provide low cost power to all of its customers - it's one of North America's largest electric producers and generates 97% of its output from water.
