The ATEX Passive Protection System provides a venting and isolation valve solution to all your venting vessel applications. Totally Passive approach eliminating the costly maintenance associated with active detection or monitored systems. Flexible use of venting approaches. Eliminates the low Pred requirement of some Flap and Pinch style valves. Through the use of Standard Frangible Vents, Re-settable Explosion Doors and/or Flameless Explosion Vents the Atex System provides the protection alternatives to meet your process operations. Eliminates Powder Blockage considerations from product fallout with clean-out technology. Monitoring of product build up not required. Field Flow and Pressure Adjustments to meet the most stringent process flow considerations. Explosion Isolation The ATEX Passive Isolation Valve provides a fully passive system that does not require active dust management or low Pred values to function properly. Metal to Metal seal eliminates temperature considerations and failures. As long as ATEX has been providing Explosion Protection Systems a truly passive System without many unworkable constraints was not available. Either the system could not handle the product flow without major restrictions to the dust loading or it had to be monitored for dust fall out because of the design limitations. While the benefits of standard ATEX Active Control Systems eliminated many of the false activations and maintenance disadvantages of other systems it still required a high ATEX engineers set about to provide a full passive System approach. Vent systems provided many options for venting. Solutions were available for many industrial applications. Vents were available that reset themselves and were flameless in design for indoor use. They lowered the costly inspections to visual and annual inspections verse the quarterly technically advances inspections required by active systems or those requiring active maintenance. But degree of maintenance procedures. Vent users were the options available for the necessary isolation increasingly aware that protection of a Dust Collector or other process vessel required isolation to provide true protection against secondary and catastrophic events. function were limited with a decision based on benefits verse limitations. No true Passive Solution was available to industrial users.

ATEX provides full design support for all of its protection systems. Support includes System Design, Installation Drawings, Field Consultations, System checkout and maintenance. Our Florida warehouse has a full stock of spare parts for all systems. To meet the need ATEX developed its clean out technology in a passive oriented system. A valve that could meet the product flow requirements of today s processes. The system would by Patent Pending Design clean out the isolation seal eliminating consideration of powder being compressed by the closure and allowing flame to pass. In addition many passive devices had additional problems with respect to air flow and pressure release. The ATEX pressure adjustment system compensates for process flow conditions allowing the pressure setting to be based on a differential between the normal process air flow and the flow and pressure associated with a deflagration. As promised with the ATEX Passive Explosion Protection System there is a passive solution to explosion protection * As with any Explosion Protection System it must be installed, commissioned and operated in accordance with ATEX standard design criterion. Refer to ATEX Explosion Protections System Installation Requirements and Operational Manuals before attempting to install or operate a Protection System While it is impossible for us to guarantee zero downtime all ATEX systems are designed to provide user friendly and maintainable systems. SOLUTIONS ATEX is a solutions approach company. Once a risk is determined ATEX provides many alternatives for Explosion Prevention and Protection of your processes. ATEX Venting, Suppression and Isolations Options provide the choices to meet protection and budgetary concerns of today s corporations. Full Vessel Drawings showing all dimensions. For Bag House Style Dust Collectors the dimensions and quantity of bags is required. Product information including Kst, Pmax, Pred for the product conveying through the vessel. Process Drawings indicating dust lengths and sizes downstream and upstream of the vessel. Dynamic Vessel Strength if available or static strength if the dynamic strength is if not available. For vessels with existing vents the design data including Kst, Pmax, Pred, etc. is required.

Explosion Isolation Valves ON TARGET Dan Guaricci Jay Oukhchi Steve Light

OFF TARGET PASSIVE EXPLOSION PROTECTION EXISTING LIMITATIONS The Need of a Truly Passive System Active Safety Controls Functionality of the valves requires active and inactive monitoring for operational effectiveness. Requires factory trained service. Product Loading Existing devices have product loading limitations that restrict use and operation. OFF Target Pressure Limitation The pressure limit of the device is based on its location to a vented enclosure with a low Pred. Air Flow Limitations An increase in the process air flow will close the valve during normal operation. Wear and Tear Issues Require active monitoring of valves trading one active system for another. Questionable Approvals Valves sold with ATEX certifications have performance limitations not presented with approvals. Approvals include factors as dust loading.

Explosion Isolation Valves EXISTING VALVE OPTIONS

Automatic Explosion Isolation Valve Quick Sliding Valve Designs require Automatic Detection and Controls Standard Quick Sliding Valve The Quick Sliding Valve provides an effective isolation method to prevent the spread of a deflagration through ductwork. The QSV Prevents the propagation of flame and pressure. They do not create a pressure drop during normal process operation. The valves require automatic detection and control systems to operate. These require quarterly maintenance per NFPA. The ATEX QSV comes complete with anger and slow stroke operation controls. The Slow Stroke controls enable the unit to be tested via the control panel maintenance and operation controls. The feature enables the user to perform the quarterly maintenance required by NFPA. Pop-Pit style Quick Sliding Valve The Quick Sliding Valve provides an effective isolation method to prevent the spread of a deflagration through ductwork. The QSV Prevents the propagation of flame and pressure. They create a pressure drop and a low product flow limitation The valves require automatic detection and control systems to operate. These require quarterly maintenance per NFPA. The QSV comes complete with anger controls. It is available with slow stroke option. The Slow Stroke controls enable the unit to be tested via the control panel maintenance and operation controls. The feature enables the user to perform the quarterly maintenance required by NFPA. Good But Still OFF TARGET

Automatic Explosion Isolation Automatic Methods using Automatic Detection and Controls Dry Chemical Isolation Dry Chemical Isolation provides a convenient method when duct size is very large. Dry Chemical does not have an associated pressure drop. Is a good protection option when Suppression is the choice for protection since maintenance is required. It requires a Control Panel with Active Detection and the associated quarterly maintenance as required by NFPA. Cleanup associated with an event or false activation creates a down time problem. There is a cost associated with the restoration of protection after any activation for any reason. Pinch Valve Isolation The Pinch style isolation valve provides limited pressure relief dependent on the Pred caused by the associated vent system. The valve requires an automatic detection and control system to function properly. This requires quarterly inspection per NFPA. The basic bladder design is subject to wear and tear caused by normal product flow. The functional design requires a large activation distance from the isolated vessel. The valve requires manual inspection to ensure bladder integrity. It also has a large foot print. Still OFF TARGET

Passive Isolation Valves Passive Valves with major use limitations Standard Pop-Pit Valve The Pop-Pit Style Valve provides an effective means of isolating explosions in areas where dust loading is extremely low. It provides an inline foot print acceptable to most installations. Its functionality is based on the increased flow associated with the explosions propagation through ductwork. The limitations in addition to the low flow is the amount of duct work required before and after the valve which can be a problem in close installations. Its low 20 m/sec flow maximum creates a problem in many process systems. The only adjustability is a spring replacement that allows a flow up to 25 m/sec. Main seal replacement requires shipment to the factory. Flap Style Isolation Valve The Flap style isolation valve provides limited pressure relief dependent on the Pred caused by the associated vent system. The basic design is susceptible to product agglomeration and also wear and tear caused by normal product flow. The system approvals per ATEX standards at least in one case allows no product flow. The unit in general is provided with active and automatic wear and tear protection. The unit is also provided with active and manual dust loading signals. The manual system requires the shutdown of the process to test for product build up. Depending on the strength of the event reconditioning might be required. It also has a large foot print relative to the ductwork. Still OFF TARGET

ATEX Introduces Truly Passive System Not a Partially Passive System But a Fully Passive System QUICK FACTS The ATEX Passive valve is a Patent Pending design improvement over existing valve designs. The valve provided a low profile inline design to meet close tolerance process configurations. The valve has a 10 bar execution eliminating concerns on the operation of the venting system. The valve is available in Mild and Stainless Steel configurations with DIN or ANSI bolt hole patterns. The system does not require detection, controls or power to function properly. The metal to metal valve seal eliminates wear and tear factors associated with plastic and rubber components. Available with mechanical and Inductive switches for process Control and signaling. QUICK FACT The Patent Pending design uses the ATEX s clean out technology to clear a path in product build up ahead of the valve seal. The field adjustable closing mechanism assures proper system calibration based on actual field conditions. If field conditions change the pressure control unit can be programed at the factory and shipped to the field for simple mechanical installation by plant personnel with limited specialized skill or training using four screws.

To Summarize: ATEX Truly Passive System Provides: A valve without major limitations - No Active Detection or Controls for Operation - No Active Monitoring required - No High Cost Quarterly Factory Maintenance - No Pred design Limitations - No Flow Restrictions - No Required Reconditioning after Activation With - Full Passive valve Activation - Steel Seals without Wear and Tear Issues - Field Adjustable to meet Pressure and Flow Requirements - Low Downtime

The Passive System With the right vent option and the ATEX Passive Explosion Isolation valve a true passive solution is possible. The following application guidelines can be followed to make sure your system design will be as approved by ATEX Standard System Approvals and NFPA requirements. Frangible Vents or Flameless Vents or Explosion Doors with Passive Isolation Valve

General System Design Options Protection Standard Frangible Vents provides a cost effective approach for venting of outside vessels. As an option for inside vessels per NFPA the vents can be ducted to the outside of the facility. All venting must be done to a safe area. Explosion Doors provide an option in situations where the additional cost is out wade by the frequent closing and openings caused by events. The self reclosing feature provides a benefit in high and inaccessible areas. Flameless vents in a rectangular and circular format provide venting when inside vessels can not be ducted to the outside of the building. Flameless vents have lower maximum Kst ratings then other vents. Standard vents can handle a Kst to 300 bar-m/sec. Circular flameless vents have a Kst rating up to 250 bar-m/sec and rectangular flameless vents have a maximum rating of 150 barm/sec Isolation AYEX Passive Isolation Valve is a truly on target isolation device that does not require controls, detection and/or power of any kind ATEX Passive Isolation Valves Do Not require expensive quarterly maintenance as required by active detection and or monitoring systems. Factory Set Field adjustable Pressure settings allow for worry free process commissioning. ATEX On Target Plow Ahead Technology eliminates the concerns over dust loading. ATEX On Target Metal to Metal Isolation Seal eliminates the Replacement, stock and failure potential of valves using rubber and plastic seals that can cause protection failure.

Total Passive System Protection l Passive Venting New ATEX Passive Valve Truly Passive System With the Venting System that meets your process needs. And adding the ATEX Passive Valve with its many cost, functional, operational and maintenance benefits. The result is a Passive System that can be installed without the active maintenance required with automatic detection and monitoring systems that requires factory trained technicians on a quarterly basis.

ATEX Passive Explosion Protection System General: The protection of any vessel requires the protection of the vessel itself and the isolation of the deflagration to prevent its propagation to other process vessels or equipment. Up to now a truly passive system was not available. Our Passive System offers a wide range of explosion vent options that optionally include frangible, door and/or flameless vents for vessel protection. Isolation is provided by the NEW! ATEX fully Passive Isolation Valve ATEX Standard System Options: The ATEX Passive Explosion Protection System provides the use of all the available vent options with an isolation device responsive to the propagation of the event without the need for automatic detection of any kind. Basic System Components: The two components of the system are a venting device and an isolation device for the inlet and outlet duct. Venting Options: Standard Frangible Vents: The most cost effective option when applicable is the frangible vent. Used singly or in multiples to provide the vent area required to reduce pressure growth below the limits of the tool for easy setup and maintenance testing. Flameless Explosion Vents: At times the venting to the outside of a facility is not possible because of the duct distance to an outside wall. At these times an ATEX flameless vent can provide an effective answer. The flameless vent uses standard frangible vents to release into a discharge chamber. The flameless vents expel the deflagration air through a series of many openings around its side retaining burned particulate inside. Available in Cylindrical and Rectangular types they meet many protection options. Inlet and Outlet Isolation: The isolation of connecting duct work is a complicated process where reliability is the major consideration. Many devices such a Quick Sliding Valves, Flap Valves, Pop-Pit Style Valves, Pinch Valves exist and all have operational issues. The New ATEX System provides the protection benefits to lower the overall operational cost and process downtime while providing an innovative venting and isolation system with the following features: - Passive activation without the need of active detection and control systems as required by QSV s. - Ability to perform during high product flows with the potential of product clogging at the valve closure. - No wear and tear issues from the product itself on rubber and synthetic surfaces. - No Powder Cleanup Downtime Concern. - No Costly Downtime for device retrofit. - No Costly quarterly factory Trained Maintenance Service required. - Does Not Rely on the P red of a Vent System for effective isolation. protected vessel. The vents provide a time tested reliable device with a definable pressure relief ratting. Explosion Doors: The most cost effective vent when multiple activations are expected or when the replacement of vents after opening is very difficult and/or time consuming. They have a self-closing feature which can minimizes the damage from fire to the filter media. It also provides quick restoration of protection after an event. Units furnished with a field calibration - Field Adjustable Pressure Release. DS PV102 Release Date: 7/30/12

Other Passive Product Offering: The flap valve relies on the Vessel Vent closure limiting the allowable design pressure to a 7.5 psi maximum. A miscalculation or failure of the vent system would allow the deflagration to overcome the pressure resistance of the valve and allow the deflagration to propagate to other devices. The Flap Style Valve requires the use of an accumulation sensor to monitor process operation. The process must be stopped intermittently to use the system. The European specifications on the device do not allow its use where dust loading is possible. The need of mechanical and automatic monitoring equipment eliminates the major benefit of the Passive System. With this valve the system needs to be monitored by a control system for a flap fault condition. Since this is an automatic system maintenance will be require at a 3 month interval as it is critical to reliable system operation. The standard Pop-Pit valve unlike the flap valve can withstand the full potential pressure of a deflagration. Its rating is not limited based on the P red of the vent system. But the standard Pop-Pit style valve has product flow limitations in ounces of product flow. The valve uses a seal larger than the pipe size to stop flame propagation. The diameter size difference allows for product build up to will prevent proper operation. But even with this limitation it is not provided with a Product Accumulation Sensor. We have not discussed the Pinch valve because it is a full active valve without passive operational benefits. The ATEX Passive Isolation valve provides a unique solution to this problem. Using advanced passive mechanical design techniques the ATEX passive valve provides the desirable advantages of the Pop Pit Style valve including passive explosion detection and valve activation plus resistance to abrasions, no system cleanup because of the suppressant and little or no reconditioning required. Unlike the standard pop-pit or flap valve the ATEX valves advance design is not affected by product flow fall out that would incapacitate these valves. Product accumulation does not have a point of system failure. As long as the product does not set to a solid and remains a powder the system will push through the blockage and provide the required isolation. With a 14 bar pressure ratting the valve can be used on vessels rated for containment. The ATEX system provides a passive protection system with all the associated operational and protection benefits. With the ATEX Passive Valve System you use Standard Frangible Low Mass Vents, self-reclosing Explosion Doors, Flameless Vents and/or Product Containment with a fully passive low maintenance approach to explosion protection. Options The ATEX valves are available in Mild Steel and Stainless Steel Execution. Mechanical and Proximity Switches for remote valve indication. ANSI or Din Bolt Hole configurations. Variable field adjustable pressure release. Removable release head for easy pressure change in the field and valve inspection. Valve is mountable in any position without replacement of system springs. Metal Seals do not require replacement or temperature concerns. Available in 2 bar gas tight pressure ratting. Available DN 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500 and 600 sizes. Of course let off pressure for maximum relief The most natural and also the most cost-effective explosion protection method for closed vessels located outside is an ATEX explosion vent. This version of damage limiting construction provides explosion protection that allows the pressure and flame to vent to a safe location lowering the pressure below the structural limit of the protected vessel. ATEX presents you two effective ways the to protect a vessel prior to destruction by the pressure wave: Single-use as a burst vent as described in this document. Should this be impractical, ATEX has successfully the Q-Pex system. Explosion flame and Explosion pressure are caught in a Q tube and the vessel is optimally protected. Propagation of an explosion: NFPA in its Standards requires explosion isolation to prevent the propagation of an event when the potential exists where it does in most applications. ATEX has different isolations methods to meet your protection needs. Our broad product range includes passive and automatic methods. Our NEW fully Passive Mechanical Explosion Valve provides a valve without requiring detection or automatic monitoring without product flow limits usually associated with other types of so called passive valves. Rely on ATEX reliable Protection from an experienced protection prfessional.
