What is Cooling Tower? Why Water Cooling is required? A Cooling Tower is a specialized Heat Exchanger in which Two Fluids (Air and Water) are brought into direct contact with each other to affect the Transfer of Heat. All Cooling Towers operate on the principle of removing Heat from Water by Evaporating a small portion of the Water that is circulated through the Unit. The Heat that is removed is called the Latent Heat of Evaporisation. Each One Pound of Water that is Evaporated removes approximately 1000 BTU in the form of Latent Heat. Cooling Towers are able to lower the Water Temp more than Devices that use only air to reject Heat, like the Radiator in a Car, and are therefore more Cost-effective and Energy Efficient. Cooled Water is needed for Air-conditioning Plants, Temp Stabilization or Heat Absorption within Production Processes and more importantly in Steam Condensation in Thermal and Nuclear Power Plants. Based on Construction, Shape and Air Draft Mechanism, Cooling Towers are catagorised into Natural Draft, Forced Draft and Induced Draft Cooling Towers. Further, classification is RCC, FRP, Wooden, Hybrid, Counter-flow, Cross-flow, Square-shaped, Bottle-shaped etc. Forced & Induced Draft Towers uses Electro-Mechanical Fans for Air Draft and are popular for its compactness and flexibilities.
