Sessions will start with an inspirational reading by a nature writer such as Annie Dillard, John Muir, or Janise Ray. This is a ramble not a hike; we will stop to view interesting plants, insects, butterflies, mushrooms, etc., along the way. Ramblers are encouraged to bring their own nature writings or favorite poems and essays to share with the group. Join us for one or all sessions; these informal rambles are free but donations are accepted in the Garden's donation box in the lobby of the Visitor Center. Each walk will focus on a different topic. We re sure to discover some magical moments each month! Bring family and friends of all ages and be prepared to hike up to 2 miles on our wooded trails and in the garden. If you have young children or infants, a backpack carrier is suggested. Sunflower Music Series: Caroline Aiken Tuesday, June 2 7:00-9:00 p.m. Flower Garden Lawn (Conservatory in inclement weather) $15; $5 children ages 6-12 We ve got a great line-up of musicians to perform for our popular annual Sunflower Music Series in one of the most beautiful and relaxing settings possible. Our June concert features Caroline Aiken, with The Twangtown Paramours opening. Caroline is an award-winning folk singer, whose new album Broken Wings Heal has just been released. Caroline has recently performed on NPR s Mountain Stage, and in the past toured with the Indigo Girls. The Twangtown Paramours hail from Nashville, and bring fine harmony singing and inventive musicianship to the stage. FRIENDS First Friday: Judy Glenn, Hummingbirds Friday, June 5 Visitor Center Downstairs 9:00 am 10:30 am, $12 Judy knows hummingbirds and she definitely knows the hummingbirds at our Garden. She worked with Garden staff to create our hummingbird trail and is teaching a few classes here this summer. She also has created amazing photos of hummingbirds. Come hear about these delicate, strong, fascinating creatures. This monthly event includes a full breakfast and an opportunity to meet new people while learning about the Garden, gardening or garden history. Carnivorous Plants: Learn to Identify, Grow and Conserve Carnivorous Plants Saturday, June 6 9:00 am 1:00 pm Visitor Center, Classroom 2 $50 Kevin Tarner, Research Technician for Plant Biology Greenhouses, UGA Carnivorous plants are unique in the fact that they get the majority of their nutrition from capturing other living organisms. The habitats for most carnivorous plants are becoming endangered due to development. Kevin will cover the importance of their habitats and what conservation steps are being taken to preserve this species-rich habitat. He will cover identification, propagation and different native carnivorous habitats. Each participant will have the chance to get their hands dirty by potting up their own carnivorous plants to take home. About 200 tree species occur in Georgia s Piedmont forests and woodlands. In this class, students learn to identify some of the most common of these by their leaves, bark, branching patterns, and tree form. Students will learn to use a hand lens and a simple dichotomous key for woody plants to identify species. Class time will be divided between classroom exercises and a field trip to the woods at the State Botanical Garden. Understanding Botanical Names Friday, June 19 9:00 am 1:00 pm Visitor Center, Gardenside Room $50 John T. Manion, Historic Gardens Curator, Atlanta History Center Overcome botanical name phobia by learning the basics of botanical nomenclature. You will quickly see how fascinating, informative, useful, and entertaining scientific names for plants can be! Classroom instruction will be followed by applying what we have learned to plants in the garden. Highly recommended text: Stearn s Dictionary of Plant Names for Gardeners by William T. Stearn (out of print, but relatively easy to find online). The North Georgia Daylily Society 2015 Daylily Show and Sale Saturday, June 20 Daylily viewing: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Visitor Center & Conservatory Daylily sales table: 10:00 am - 3:30 pm Free Visitors to the show are welcome to view over a hundred different beautiful daylilies. Digital Plant Photography: Flower Portraits and Plants in the Landscape Saturday, June 20 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Visitor Center, Classroom 2 $50 Chuck Murphy, Nature Photographer (www.boywithcamera.com) Enhance your photography skills for both flower portraits and plants in the landscape in this hands-on workshop. In our morning session, we ll first review choosing and using appropriate camera equipment, both DSLR and point & shoot. Next we ll cover composition, isolating the subject, and working with light. We ll also review the considerations in shooting landscapes vs. plant portraits vs. close-ups. Our morning will conclude with a photography exercise in the Garden (weather permitting) or the Conservatory. After lunch (not included), we ll review your photos from the morning exercise and conclude with an overview on using free software tools to enhance, edit, and share your photos. Bring a camera or binoculars if you d like and join the adventure! The last hour of

Classic City Band Annual Patriotic Concert Sunday, June 28 2:00-3:00 Visitor Center & Conservatory Free Join us in the air-conditioned conservatory to enjoy this popular annual concert filled with popular and patriotic tunes. This popular concert is always standing room only, so arrive early. Fifth Tuesday Swing Night Tuesday, June 30 8-11 p.m. Visitor Center Free Every Tuesday, the UGA Swing Club hosts a Swing Night open to the community at Dancefx Athens. It begins with a lesson from 8-9 p.m., followed by a casual evening of social swing dancing. Many people purchase a card to attend all four Tuesdays in a month, but if there is a fifth Tuesday, admission is free and the venue may change! This month the UGA Swing Club will host the fifth Tuesday free swing night at the State Botanical Garden's Visitor Center & Conservatory. Wander through a garden and, if you re observant, you ll see family resemblances there too. You might not know the name of the plant but you ll be able to pick out its relatives and be well on your way to learning its ID. In this class, we will learn about some important plant families, recognizing their characteristics in the classroom or garden and giving you the skills to quickly identify the unknown plants that you might run across. Often we focus so much on spring we forget to stock our gardens with perennials for late summer and fall. This class will focus on bulbs, perennials, and blooming shrubs that will extend the blooming season. The class will meet in classroom for a presentation and then explore the grounds to see color what these bloomers can provide in the summer months. Chuck Murphy is an award-winning nature photographer based in Athens. His photo expeditions have taken him around the world, to over 35 countries, and to all seven continents. He specializes in images of birds, bugs, and blooms. For his show at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, he has created a new series of photographs entitled Nature, Illustrated. The exhibition features a wide variety of images, centered around the theme of revealing the beauty of the natural world in ways that the human eye typically doesn't see. Our August concert features Grogus, returning for their annual celebration of Latin jazz, traditional Cuban and Caribbean styles and funk versions of jazz standards. The band is a past recipient of the Flagpole Athens Music Award in both the jazz and world music categories. Flower Arranging Unit 1: Line/Line Mass Design Wednesday, August 26 9:00 am - 3:00 pm (bring sack lunch) Visitor Center, Gardenside Room $45 Celia McQuaid Brown, Accredited Judge, The Garden Club of Georgia Due to popular demand, Celia McQuaid Brown, a Garden Club of Georgia Accredited Judge, is once again teaching the entire five-unit flower arranging series. Upon completion of all five units, students will be awarded the Basic Design Certificate from The Garden Club of Georgia. Courses do not need to be completed in order. Participants will be provided a list of materials to bring to class. Additional units of study include Mass Design and Foliage Design, Design for Dining Table, Fruit and Vegetable Design, and Creative Miniature Design. Limited to 20 participants. Plant Conservation: Protecting Plant Diversity in the Garden and in the Wild Saturday, August 29 9:00 am 1:00 pm Visitor Center, Classroom 2 $105 Jennifer Ceska, Conservation Coordinator, and Jim Affolter, Dir. of Research, SBG Plant conservation is an applied science that draws upon many fields of knowledge from ecology to horticulture, to ethics and politics. This course surveys threats to biodiversity in Georgia and worldwide, examples of rare plant research, techniques for restoration and reintroduction, and ways individuals and organizations are making a difference in protecting the rare plants of Georgia.
