SECTION 02230BP AGGREGATE BASE PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SCOPE A. Work in this Section includes material and placement requirements for aggregate base and choke stone for access roads, access ramps, access aisles, office and parking areas, laydown and stockpile areas, and other roads and aggregate surfaces as shown on the Construction Drawings. B. Construction and Material Specifications, 2013 Edition (Ohio C&MS). Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). C. Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 2012 Edition (Ohio MUTCD). ODOT. 1.04 SUBMITTALS A. For each source of aggregate base material, choke stone, and geotextile submit the following to the Construction Manager for review at least 14 calendar days prior to placement: 1. source of the material along with written certification from the supplier that the aggregate base material and choke stone conform to the requirements of Ohio C&MS and this Section; and 2. test results as required by Ohio C&MS demonstrating that the aggregate base material and choke stone conform to the requirements of Ohio C&MS and this Section. 3. Manufacturer s data sheets and written certification that the geotextile separator conforms to the requirements of this Section. 4. Manufacturer s product data sheets, recommended methods of storage, handling, and installation for road signs, traffic control devices, and guardrail. B. Submit to the Construction Manager, at least 14 calendar days prior to commencement of Work described in this Section, a list of equipment and materials; description of construction means, methods, and techniques; and other required information related to this Section in the Contractor s Work Plan specified in Section 02200BP. C. Submit to the Construction Manager, at least 14 calendar days prior to commencement of work described in this Section, a Traffic Control Plan, including road signs, other traffic control devices and flagging requirements, in accordance with Ohio MUTCD, Ohio C&MS, and the Construction Drawings. Include this Plan in Contractor s Work Plan specified in Section 02200BP. 1.05 CONTRACTOR S QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Contractor s quality assurance requirements shall be in accordance with Attachment J-16 of the Contract Documents and this Section. 1.06 HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS A. Environmental Health & Safety/Training requirements shall be in accordance with Attachment J-13 of the Contract Documents. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Furnish aggregate base material conforming to the requirements of Ohio C&MS Items 304.02 and 703.17. 02230BP-2

B. Furnish choke stone material conforming to the requirements of Ohio C&MS Item 703.01 with gradation requirements for No. 57 stone, as described in Ohio C&MS Table 703.01-1. C. Furnish Type D dumped rock fill in accordance with Section 02271AR and as shown on the Construction Drawings. D. Perform manufacturing quality control tests to demonstrate that the geotextile properties conform to the values specified in Table 02230BP-1. Perform the following manufacturing quality control tests at a maximum interval of one test for each 50,000 square feet manufactured for the following ASTM test methods: D3786, D4533, D4632, D4833, D5261, and D6241. All tested rolls of material used to certify compliance shall be delivered to the Site. Test data for rolls not delivered to the Site shall not be accepted. E. Geotextile rolls shall be marked or tagged in accordance with ASTM D4873 with the following information: 1. Manufacturer's name; 2. product identification; 3. lot or batch number; 4. roll number; and 5. roll dimensions. F. Geotextile rolls not labeled in accordance with this Section or on which labels are illegible shall be rejected and replaced. The Contractor shall notify the Construction Manager of any rolls not labeled in accordance with this Section. G. Obtain material for fill in accordance with Section 02200BP. H. Furnish materials for road signs and other traffic control devices in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 630 that conform to the requirements described in Ohio MUTCD and as shown on the Construction Drawings. I. Furnish materials for guardrail in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 606 and as shown on the Construction Drawings. 2.02 EQUIPMENT A. Furnish equipment for placement of aggregate base, choke stone, geotextile separator, and installation of road signs and traffic control devices in accordance with this Section and the Contractor s Work Plan. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL A. Verify existing conditions and subgrade elevations in accordance with Section 02100BP prior to placement of geotextile separator, aggregate base, or Type D dumped rock fill. 02230BP-3

B. Prior to performing Work described in this Section, install and maintain surface water management and erosion and sediment controls in accordance with Section 02270BP and the Contractor s Work Plan. C. Place geotextile separator, aggregate base, choke stone, or Type D dumped rock fill after completion of the following: 1. written confirmation of compliance of aggregate base material, choke stone, and dumped rock fill stockpiles by the Construction Manager; and 2. written confirmation of compliance of underlying layers, including acceptance of survey results for subgrade, by the Construction Manager. D. Install road signs and other traffic control devices in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 630, Ohio MUTCD, and the Construction Drawings. E. Install guardrail in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 606 and as shown on the Construction Drawings. F. Stockpile materials in accordance with Section 02200BP. G. Implement dust control in accordance with the Contractor s Work Plan. 3.02 SUBGRADE PREPARATION A. Prepare the subgrade in accordance with Section 02200BP prior to placement of geotextile separator, aggregate base, and Type D dumped rock fill. 3.03 GEOTEXTILE A. Acceptance, Handling, and Storage 1. Upon delivery to the Site, the Contractor shall inspect and inventory the geotextile materials and the manner in which they are stored. The Contractor shall notify the Construction Manager within 3 calendar days of delivery of any geotextile material that is not acceptable for installation. 2. Contractor shall unload, handle, and store geotextile material such that damage to geotextile materials does not occur. Geotextile materials damaged during unloading, handling, and storage shall be replaced at the Contractor s expense. 3. Protection and preservation of geotextile material shall include, but not be limited to: a. protection from sunlight, moisture, excessive heat or cold, puncture, mud, dirt, and dust or other damaging conditions; and b. storage of rolls on pallets or other elevated structures; do not store rolls directly on the ground. B. Installation 1. Install the geotextile separator over the prepared subgrade as described in this Section and as shown on the Construction Drawings. 2. Do not commence geotextile installation until obtaining written confirmation of compliance of underlying layers, including acceptance of Contractor s survey results, by the Construction Manager. 02230BP-4

3. Handle geotextiles so as to ensure they are not damaged. 4. After unwrapping the geotextiles from their opaque covers, do not leave them exposed for a period in excess of the Manufacturer s written recommended exposure period. Geotextiles that are allowed to be exposed for a period in excess of the Manufacturer s written recommended exposure period shall be removed and replaced at Contractor s expense. 5. During installation of geotextiles, take precautions to prevent damage to underlying layers, including rutting in subgrade. Repair damaged subgrade in accordance with Section 02200BP. 6. Take care not to entrap stones, dust, or moisture below or in the geotextiles. 7. Examine the geotextile surface after installation to ensure that no potentially harmful foreign objects are entrapped under or within the geotextile. Remove such objects that are entrapped and repair the geotextile in accordance with this Section. Replace damaged geotextiles that are unable to be repaired. 8. Anchor or weight geotextiles with sandbags, or by other means, methods, and techniques described in the Contractor s Work Plan, to prevent damage and displacement from wind. 9. Overlap geotextile separator for roads and parking areas a minimum of 12 inches. 10. Repair holes or tears in the geotextiles using patches made from the same geotextile material. Extend geotextile patches a minimum of 1 foot beyond the damaged area. Should a tear exceed 50 percent of the width of the panel, cut across the entire width of the panel treat as a separate panel. 11. Remove soil or other material that may have been entrapped under or within the torn geotextiles. 3.04 AGGREGATE BASE A. Construct the aggregate base layer to the thickness, grades, and limits shown on the Construction Drawings. B. Aggregate base shall be free of debris, foreign objects, organics, and other deleterious materials. C. Do not operate equipment directly on the geotextile. D. Do not damage or displace the geotextile separator by pushing or shoving material across the geotextile separator. Place the aggregate base material on top of the geotextile separator by dumping the material on the preceding lift and placing in a manner that cascades the material onto the geotextile. E. Spread and place the aggregate base as shown on the Construction drawings in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 304.04. F. Compact the aggregate base in accordance with Ohio C&MS Item 304.05. G. Prior to constructing the asphalt concrete in accordance with Section 02235BP, protect constructed aggregate base on which asphalt concrete is to be installed against traffic; ensure drainage until asphalt concrete surfacing is completed; and keep the surface free of accumulations of materials that would contaminate the mixture, prevent bonding, or interfere with asphalt concrete spreading operations. Aggregate base that does not comply with the requirements of this Section shall be removed, reworked, or replaced at the Contractor s expense. 02230BP-5

3.05 DUMPED ROCK FILL FOR ROADS A. Construct the dumped rock fill layer to the thickness, grades, and limits shown on the Construction Drawings. B. Do not operate equipment directly on the geotextile. C. Install geotextile separator in accordance with this Section and as shown on the Construction Drawings prior to placing the Type D dumped rock fill for areas that receive heavy duty aggregate surfacing. D. Do not damage or displace the geotextile separator by pushing or shoving material across the geotextile separator. Place the Type D dumped rock fill on top of the geotextile separator in accordance with this Section and as shown on the Construction Drawings. E. Place choke stone to fill in voids on top of the Type D dumped rock fill as shown on the Construction Drawings. Do not damage or displace the underlying layers by pushing or shoving the material across the dumped rock fill. Place the choke stone on top of the dumped rock fill by dumping the material on the dumped rock fill and place it in a manner that cascades the material onto the dumped rock fill. Grade the choke stone to provide a smooth surface for subsequent aggregate base placement. F. Construct the aggregate base on top of the choke stone in accordance with this Section and to the thickness, grades, and limits shown on the Construction Drawings. 3.06 CONSTRUCTION QUALITY REQUIREMENTS A. Construction Quality Control (CQC) shall be performed in accordance with the Contract Documents. B. Contractor shall coordinate construction activities through the Construction Manager to accommodate the activities required of the CQC Consultant. C. Contractor shall notify the Construction Manager at least 7 calendar days prior to placement of aggregate base material in new locations. D. CQC Consultant will perform performance testing on aggregate base to establish compliance with this Section and Ohio C&MS 304.05. 3.07 SURVEY CONTROL A. Survey alignment, locations, and elevations for aggregate base and dumped rock fill, and locations for guardrail and road signs, in accordance with Section 02100BP. 3.08 TOLERANCES A. Access road and access ramp alignments shall be within ±0.1 feet of the locations shown on the Construction Drawings. Temporary construction access alignment shall be within ±0.3 feet of the locations shown on the Construction Drawings. 02230BP-6

B. Place dumped rock fill to within -0.1 to +0.3 feet of the thickness shown on the Construction Drawings. C. Place aggregate base for access roads and access ramps to within ±0.1 feet of the thickness shown on the Construction Drawings. D. Place aggregate base for access roads and access ramps to within ±0.1 feet of the elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. E. Place aggregate base for access road ramps to within 0.0 to +0.2 feet of the width shown on the Construction Drawings. F. Place aggregate base for temporary access and other areas within ±0.2 feet of the elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. 02230BP-7
